We left the Biscuit early to head north to Memphis for the Family Band's show on the Gibson rooftop. As we came into town, we passed the band's bus, parked at Gibson. A cop stopped traffic as we pulled up by the bus and hey, there was Marcus in the doorway! On to the hotel for a nap and a sandwich and then on to the rooftop for a night to remember!
Robert started with a nice easy tune featuring him on his pedal steel. Then he segued into Ted's Jam, I think it was. And THEN it was The March! I had been wishing that he would give more of his old tunes, esp that one, in his shows and VOILA! Said they hadn't played it in ages! His cousin who is now on guitar has a really great voice. Also Danyell showed his vocal range when he not only hit some amazingly high notes but also some amazingly low notes. Eric Gales sat in the last half of the show. Best show I've seen them put on in a while. Oh, and Marcus cut off his dreads. Love those Randolph boys, esp that pedal steel player.

yyr .....he is one smokin player.....did the band members switch instruments
during the set?......
i was lucky enuf to see them several years ago, before they got
famous...they were the opening act for clapton....blew me right out
of my boots....and when clapton came out and did a tune with them...
and later randolph came out and jammed with clapton, i embarassed the
shit out of my teen son, by dancin in the aisles...but half the crowd at least
was up and shakin it....
thanks for the review fkkjunky..

Nope, they didnt trade instruments. I"m hope they've taken that out of their show. It gets old. But Robert did play a few tunes on the electric guitar and he is sounding mo betta. Hmmm, I think it was close to my 15th family band show. I think I saw them first at the New Daisy Theater in Memphis in 03.

That must have been a great time, kk! I've been interested in going to a show at the Gibson rooftop for a while. I met a bunch of folks from all over at The Biscuit and I was having such a good time, I didn't make it back to Memphis until Monday.

I stayed at the Shack Up Inn for Pinetop's Homecoming on Sunday. They had music in the Cotton Gin for the first time. T-Model Ford was on stage and Cedric Burnside (R.L.'s grandson) and Malcolm started to get up on the stage to start playing. I guess T-Model wasn't quite done yet, because he pulled a knife on them.

Staxsun told me that seating is limited at the Rooftop. Did you girls find any seats or were you up dancing the whole time?

T Model's wife left him a few months back and he ain't been the same since. Did he have his grandson whacking the drums for him? And Cedric and Malcolm have taken care of the old man for years so I'm wondering whats up with that knife thing. Hmm. Any more details?

It was not sold out for the family band show but there were lots of people. We did get to sit for a while. There were a few chairs here and there. It was a lovely evening on the rooftop.

No, KK, no more details, except Bill from the SUI emailed everyone asking if anybody got a picture of it! That's too bad about T-Model's wife... I hope he works out whatever is bothering him.

Sounds like a perfect night in Memphis! I wasn't too impressed with The Mannish Boys on Sat. night. I stuck around for almost 3 songs before I abandoned ship.
