Let's get a little more music on this new bored.
What new artist (new to you) caught your attention recently?
OR
What old artist pleasantly surprised you lately? (please don't say Rod Stewart, please )
For me, a group I discovered at Tall Stacks, that blew me away was Mountain Heart, a great bluegrass group. http://www.mountainheart.com/
And, Bob Seger is back! His new CD rocks!

I have been digging a new cd by The Fray. If you watch Grey's Anatomy, their song is the one they play on there all the time called "How to Save a Life". I only liked a couple of songs at first but my daughter fell in love with it and now we've been listening to it all the time. It's one of those cd's that grows on you the more you listen to it.
Other than that, the only cd's I've purchased recently were to replace old albums. I bought The Essential Adam Ant (awesome!), and some Rush and Better Than Ezra stuff.

Anybody heard the new RRFB disc? I've only heard the one tune that must be the single. It was OK, but it was no Squeeze.

Albums great , would definately recommend it. I have heard the single "thrill of it" twice on t.v the last week. Once before the Michigan -Penn State game, and between two shows on Nbc the other day. Pretty cool to see them getting some national notice.

Anyone in the mood for something a heavier should check out Black Stone Cherry. They have a good little Skynyrd/Sabbath/Black Crowes/Black Label Society thing going on. 1st two songs on the album are not that great, but after that it really takes off.

Tea Leaf Green is a young SF band with a ton of talent. Jackie Greene while getting lots of radio play around the country is awesome live.
Stymie and the Pimp Jones Love Orchestra (http://www.myspace.com/stymie) is an SF Funk band going on 15 years of action in the bay area, voted best SF Funk band by SF Weekly in 2001, and according to Zigaboo Modeliste of the Meters, "This band outclasses Outkast two times." They also have a bunch of videos here: http://www.stymieluv.com/video/ . Enjoy!!

I agree the new Grace Potter disc is really good, Amy. I also picked up MMW with John Schofield. The new Buffett CD is good. Also, Tom Waits has a collection either out or coming out called Orphans some previous stuff and some new stuff.

I was also telling Amyloves just now that I've heard several things recently by this girl Brandi Carlile. I've really liked every song I've heard so far. I think she's from around Seattle or somewhere over that way.

I can't get too far away from the 2005 album from est (http://www.est-music.com/) called Viaticum (http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/release/cg3n/) before I have to listen to it again. Especially Eighty Eight Days in My Veins (http://www.content.loudeye.com/scripts/hurl.exe?clipid=090178001020706900&cid=600111) Doesn't look like they are coming back to the states until April, but dime has been getting me my est fix and I hope it continues.

They look very intriguing. I wish I could get a sample of their music. How would you describe it?
Anyone ever heard of Euforquestra. These guys are great if you like Afrobeat. http://www.euforquestra.com/welcome/index.asp
Last time I saw them they ended the show with Burning Down the House (Afrobeat version). It rocked!

est has it own sound, a real subtle soulful rush. This makes them one of the hottest jazz bands in Europe. Maybe a touch of Medeski, Martin Wood but with tuneful melodies. At times they seem like a straight up piano jazz trio, but then something "different" will happen , like the Bass Player pulling out a bow, stepping on a pedal and sounding more like Jimi Hendrix than Charles Mingus or the drummer starts talking into his amplified cymbal. If you go to their web site (http://www.est-music.com/), a work of art itself, after the first page, you will see a music player at top left that cycles through several songs.
And dimeadozen, if you are a member, currently has a lot of est torrents (http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=117080)running. If after all this, you are still interested...I can send you a CD that I got from dime. (jazzfestlover@gmail.com)

Good Morning you HunkaHunka burnin' love! It's good to be back in the fray w/ all y'all. We love you madly and miss you badly.
Back to the topic ( my how we drift), all the new stuff I have heard is the new Buffet (a good Buffet production), some of the Tony Joe White ( it's good, but gets sorta, same, repetitive. Howevah,Rainy Night in Ga is a slow -dance -belly -rubber- thank -God -I'm -too -old -to -get- pregnant -song. Whew!),and I too anxiously await JJ and EC. 2 of my favorite performers.I noted Saturn will take a little shot of bluegrass now and again, and Vince Gill- I know he's country- has a nice set out w/ alot of grassers like Alison Kraus. What I have heard of it is pretty good.Kiss kiss, over and out.

My favorite new cd has to be Walter Trout's Full Circle. Featuring several great guitar players. John Mayall, Coco Montoya, Eric Sardinas, Bernard Allison, Joe Bonamassa, Jeff Healey, Guitar Shorty and others.

SAw Johnny Sketch and the dirty notes at the mirliton fest. They funked it up. Loved their sound.
And then at LMF, i bought a few cds. My take after one listen:
Stanton Moore- III. My favorite of his three.
Soul Rebels-Urban Legend. Nice laid back brass.
Robert Randolph and the Family Band-Colorblind. If you love pop rock, you'll probably like this. NOthing like his first two cds. Not one instrumental on the entire cd. I'm afraid the boy has bowed to the wishes of his record company.
Big Sam's Funky Nation-Take Me Back. My ears like it betta than his first.
New Birth Brass Band-New Orleans Second Line! YYR!
Dirty Dozen Brass Band-What's Going on. Remake of Marvin Gaye's album. amazing stuff.
A Celebration of New Orleans Music to benefit Musicares Hurricane Relief. Lots of great traditional tunes.

Just got Bob Margolin's newest release,In North Carolina, out of my mailbox today. It's $15 + postage, through cdmojo. It is very, very nice. Those who love the blues should not overlook this one.
I got to hear some of the J.J. Cale/ Eric Clapton stuff yesterday on the radio. It's wonderful! Can't wait to pick up a copy.
I finally got around to buying the new Bob Dill cd. It's very bluesy. It may be his best since Blood On The Tracks. The band he plays with is certainly the best since BOTT.
It must be Bob week around here because I just got the premium from a radio station fund raiser. It's Dylan's No Direction Home: The Soundtrack. I've played it twice in the last two days.
There's some interesting stuff on there. The sweetest thing on it is the first complete take of Mr. Tambourine Man that has Ramblin' Jack Elliot singing the chorus with Dylan.

disc is everything I had hoped it would be. Granted I'm a slightly biased opinion. I've been a JJ fan since I bought Naturally in 1972. (there was a jock on the AM station in my hometown that played Crazy Mama all the time. this goes out to you, Lee White, wherever you are) If I could find any flaw, it's that I prefer the original version of Don't Cry Sister with the acoustic guitars and Christine Lakelands' vocal more prevelant in the mix. Pretty nit-picky, this version is very good.
Highly recommended.
The RRFB Colorblind disc is not near as strong as his first two. No Squeeze, Calypso, or Right Direction here. (I am glad they finally learned all the lyrics to Jesus Is Just Alright.) Just hope this disc will be an exception and not the norm for them in the future. (opinion - everybodys got one and mine stinks too)

in the late night tales series i just got Air (a french band) and sly and robbie's version of this compilation. good stuff. the series basically lets the band select their favorite late night songs and remix them to make a compilation. air's version is better and includes some cool tracks. i also got mercury rev's latest release- also good- if you like flaming lips type production.
I don't know if this has already been posted but there is an article in the November Offbeat about a 4 disc set of funky soul and rare grooves called "What It Is". I bought it last weekend at LMF and it rocks! I love it!

ohio, i love the rap on the dozen's what's goin on. Just enough. I think listening to my son's hiphop group changed my perspective on the genre. What i hear on wgo is laid back and cool, not abrasive and offensive. They call it underground hiphop. Sounds like intelligent hiphop to these ears.
