Other Chicago related sports new: In what can only be considered good news for Blackhawk fans, "Dollar" Bill Wirtz passed away last night. Our thoughts go out to the Wirtz family who are, no doubt, spending the day looking for the cheapest funeral deal in the Chicago area.

maybe if he can catch a pass that hit's him in the hands we could use him as a reciever, unless he can block then we need him on the line, or maybe he could do a better job calling plays then we should fit him for a headset.

In the spirit of the season, it's time to roll out the classic Steve Goodman song:

A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request

By the shore's of old Lake Michigan
Where the "hawk wind" blows so cold
An old Cub fan lay dying
In his midnight hour that tolled
Round his bed, his friends had all gathered
They knew his time was short
And on his head they put this bright blue cap
From his all-time favorite sport
He told them, "Its late and its getting dark in here"
And I know its time to go
But before I leave the line-up
Boys, there's just one thing I'd like to know

Do they still play the blues in Chicago
When baseball season rolls around
When the snow melts away,
Do the Cubbies still play
In their ivy-covered burial ground
When I was a boy they were my pride and joy
But now they only bring fatigue
To the home of the brave
The land of the free
And the doormat of the National League

Told his friends "You know the law of averages says:
Anything will happen that can"
That's what it says
"But the last time the Cubs won a National League pennant
Was the year we dropped the bomb on Japan"
The Cubs made me a criminal
Sent me down a wayward path
They stole my youth from me
(that's the truth)
I'd forsake my teachers
To go sit in the bleachers
In flagrant truancy

and then one thing led to another
and soon I'd discovered alcohol, gambling, dope
football, hockey, lacrosse, tennis
But what do you expect,
When you raise up a young boy's hopes
And then just crush 'em like so many paper beer cups.

Year after year after year
after year, after year, after year, after year, after year
'Til those hopes are just so much popcorn
for the pigeons beneath the 'L' tracks to eat
He said, "You know I'll never see Wrigley Field, anymore before my eternal rest
So if you have your pencils and your score cards ready,
and I'll read you my last request
He said, "Give me a double header funeral in Wrigley Field
On some sunny weekend day (no lights)
Have the organ play the "National Anthem"
and then a little 'na, na, na, na, hey hey, hey, Goodbye'
Make six bullpen pitchers, carry my coffin
and six ground keepers clear my path
Have the umpires bark me out at every base
In all their holy wrath
Its a beautiful day for a funeral, Hey Ernie lets play two!
Somebody go get Jack Brickhouse to come back,
and conduct just one more interview
Have the Cubbies run right out into the middle of the field,
Have Keith Moreland drop a routine fly
Give everybody two bags of peanuts and a frosty malt
And I'll be ready to die

Build a big fire on home plate out of your Louisville Sluggers baseball bats,
And toss my coffin in
Let my ashes blow in a beautiful snow
From the prevailing 30 mile an hour southwest wind
When my last remains go flying over the left-field wall
Will bid the bleacher bums ad?eu
And I will come to my final resting place, out on Waveland Avenue

The dying man's friends told him to cut it out
They said stop it that's an awful shame
He whispered, "Don't Cry, we'll meet by and by near the Heavenly Hall of Fame
He said, "I've got season's tickets to watch the Angels now,
So its just what I'm going to do
He said, "but you the living, you're stuck here with the Cubs,
So its me that feels sorry for you!"

And he said, "Ahh Play, play that lonesome losers tune,
That's the one I like the best"
And he closed his eyes, and slipped away
What we got is the Dying Cub Fan's Last Request
And here it is

Do they still play the blues in Chicago
When baseball season rolls around
When the snow melts away,
Do the Cubbies still play
In their ivy-covered burial ground
When I was a boy they were my pride and joy
But now they only bring fatigue
To the home of the brave
The land of the free

It was Steve who introduced me to ridin on "the city of new orleans.."

His ashes were scattered in the outfield at Wrigley after his death in 1984... and today his composition from earlier that year -- "go Cubs go"-- is being sung by the fans after every game there. Hope Steve has reason to keep smilin down on us this fall.

Go Cubs Go has been echoing throughout our house this fall thanks to my daughters.

City of New Orleans is a classic that I just recently found out was covered by John Boutte. Another favorite is Lincoln Park Pirates, "from Wilmette to Gary, there's nothing so hairy.....".

They are killing me. I had my friend Colleen check my playoff tickets;
I couldn't bear to look at the WS (can't utter the word) tickets

Over the weekend, I had my hair tied in pigtails and they won three straight.
I took them out once I got back to NY & they were swept by the Marlins.

My tails are back. Cubs are going to win this evening.

The Cubbies are always making excuses... Bartman, a GOAT etc... They need to go into the playoffs winning or they are just going to make it to the first series and out.... And once again they will break all you Cubs fans hearts.

Sometimes the difference between those two teams is a missed interference call involving the Cubs vs. a wrong dropped third strike call for the Sox. Correct calls in both situations and things could be reversed.

I'm with you that yes, the Cubs management and many of their fans are always clinging to some excuse why they haven't won. This morning, I understand that Kaplan is already making excuses saying that the National League teams are going to be tired & may play poorly. Alot of us joke, however, a real fan understands why the 2003 team did not make it into the WS and had nothing to do with fan interference (or a friggin' goat).

Phillies and the Rockies...they are on a roll and have the momentum. We need a big weekend! The Cubs are flawed (selfish players & Piniella won't change his closer), but time will tell.

Thank-you Frosty for proving my point. Excuses on top of excuses. The Sox didnt get a World Series ring based on one play. The Cubs used Bartman as their whipping boy along with the GOAT. I hope the Cubs go all the way but I dont really think they have what it takes.

Yea, I'm bi when it comes to baseball too. Grew up on South side and now live on North side. There aren't many of us, greg. I'd say I'm 51% Cubs, 49% Sox, but maybe that's just this year! Luckily I don't really have to choose very often.

It would just be a blast if the Cubbies made it into the playoffs - I wouldn't expect more than that this year. Tonite will tell.... the only way the Brewers could make it would be if they win em all & Cubs lose most.

Yeah, some of us did. The early part of the season, I was frustrating when Lou announced in the press that he planned to adhere to a strategy. You would show up at the ballpark the next day and it wasn't what you expected to find. I became a convert after a brilliant Sunday afternoon game in early June when he called a great hit and run followed by a squeeze play a couple of innings later.

I must be softening in my old age...I actually feel for the Met and their fans right now. Papers are going to be brutal tomorrow.

So sorry, Mike and all the other Cubs fans, I was pulling for an old school Cubs and Phillies final. Could have gone either way then, since I grew up in Philly, but a Cubs vs. Cleveland Series would have had some serious mojo. Since the Tigers didn't have the gas this year, I think I'm pulling for the Tribe to take out the hated Yankees (just need 1 more!) and then go on to pound whatever Mountain Timezone team emerges from the National league.

The Cubs remind me of that friend or family member everyone knows who just can't seem to get a break. Just when they seem to be on the verge of something, BAM, something comes along to muck it up.
