Yes, I saw those a couple of months ago. I only thought I was a big SRV fan.

Nice lineup.

It does look pretty solid. Some of the lesser-knowns too. Kayla Reeves is still just a kid, maybe 15, but with a voice mature enough for someone 3 times her age. Close your eyes, it could be Susan Tedeschi singing. Tyler Dow Bryant is another young'n, 16, but I've heard enough good things about him from folks whose opinion I trust, that I've been wanting to check him out.

Okay, so it looks like Cowboy Mouth is coming to town!

But they are playing the same day as Rebirth, and as the SRV Rememberence. WTF? Three great choices all on the same day, and it's a Sunday, no less.

WTF indeed.
Swag - do you have any experience with HOB shows and timing? We'd love to hear Rebirth Sunday. They are scheduled at 9 - but we couldn't get there until about 10:30. Are they good about starting on time? Would we miss too much?

The one show I saw at HOB started close to on time. That was in the main showroom, this one is in the Cambridge room, if that makes a difference. The last time I saw Rebirth at a Dallas club, it was the Gypsy Tea Room, which was also usually close to prompt, but that set - in true Rebirth fashion - started very late.

Rebirth's web site and HOB.com both say 9, but Rebirth's myspace page says 10. The HOB site actually shows doors 8 show 9, but the ticketing page lists the Inner City Allstars as "support", which I assume means that they are opening. If so, with an opener, RBB probably won't start till 10:30 or later. So you're probably ok.

If anyone else is reading this, BTW, I've seen Inner City Allstars and they are worth catching. They're a RBB-style funk/brass band out of Denton/UNT.

One other thing I just thought of. I don't know how late the box office is open. I've been at HOB New Orleans where the band is still playing, it's not sold out, but the box office is closed for the night and they won't let you in without a ticket. Monumentally stupid, but there you go.

In that case, we did eventually talk ourselves inb but it wasn't easy. I don't know if HOB Dallas is the same way, but given the corporate setup, it wouldn't surprise me. So if you think you want to go, I'd call them some evening this week to see how late the box office will be open, and if it closes too early, then get advance tixkets.

Hey Swag, what's this I hear about a Texas Blues Museum in Arlington? Is this separate from the project you're working on?

Hey Swag, what's this I hear about a Texas Blues Museum in Arlington? Is this separate from the project you're working on?

Yes, different.

The Arlington venture is envisioned as a "5-acre site [that] will become the museum's home, part of a $300 million complex that would include a 2,000-seat auditorium and mix of retail, hotel and high-dollar condominiums." It is for-profit, and (at least by name) seems to be focused on blues only. It seems to be in the "glint-in-the-eye" phase, with no funding.

http://www.star-telegram.com/arlington_news/story/248794.html

My project, the Texas Music Center at Fair Park, is a non-profit project focusing on all genres of Texas music. We expect to open in 3500 square feet with full build-out at about 14000. Our fund-raising goals are less than 5% of what the other project plans. We have our building secured with a 30 year lease from the city. We got a half million in matching funds in the last city bond election, but our fundraising does have a way to go.

HOB - thanks for the heads up. We'll probably go the advance ticket route. Since we'll be late, I'll want to save every precious minute I can.

Texas Music Center - wow, I didn't know you were involved with that, that's great. I've got the tshirts that's one of my faves cause it's so cool.

Ummm....no. Some local festival, several years ago. One of my groups played first thing in the morning (ugh) and it was really hot (double ugh). The TMC had a booth set up facing the stage and I chatted with a guy there (wow - it could have been you?!?) either right before or after our performance.

Sounds like the Dallas City Arts fest. We've programmed the main stage every year since the first, and it's always really hot.

Really nice writeup in yesterday's News of the RRFB & Robert Cray show Thursday. Bummed I was out of town for that.

And looks like more travel will keep me away from Galactic & from Mavis, Charlie, NMAS.

Posted elsewhere by my friend Chuck Nevitt:

Dear comrades in the blues, please note that the DNA BLUES BALL
benefit scheduled for Nov 24th at the historic (and beautiful art deco
shrine) Lakewood Theater now has an official website up and running at
www.dnabluesball.org .

I am STILL working on a couple of names that I'll keep secret until I
know for sure--but I think the show should be worthwhile, both
musically and for what it is setting out to accomplish (raise funds,
and raise the awareness that funds are needed for DNA testing...and
Dallas County leads the whole country in post conviction DNA based
reversals).

The Moeller brothers of the Fabulous Thunderbirds band will be the
anchor band for most of the guests (and we'll possibly be adding Bob
Dylan guitarist Denny Freeman to that mix as well). Candye Kane is
coming into town for the show. Zac Harmon has stepped up to the plate
and is cutting his trip back home to Miss for the holidays short to
lend his talent to the evening. The always illustrious Cheryl Arena
is bringing her hapr based blues to the show (as well as a special
auction package sent to her personally by Charlie Musselwhite for this
event...as he was once jailed for 30 days in Chicago behind a
policeman's false testimony)! I am also trying to get the Austin based
Greyhounds up here for the show, that way we'll have an organ on stage
(Red Young was my first choice, but he hasn't responded to my
plea...damn it). I am also awaiting confirmation from Wanda King.

There will be local and state politicians there, along with the Dallas
D.A. Craig Watkins, a couple of the men who have been released as a
result of DNA evidence will be there to share their storied, and the
BBC will be in the house filming the proceedings as part of the
documentary they are producing (revolving around some college interns
/ law students who are working with the Innocence Project Of Texas.

Visit the website mentioned in the first paragraph for ticket purchase
info, and to learn more about DNA testing.

I've seen Cheryl more times than I can count since she moved here. She's one of those players who is always out at the jams on nights when she doesn't have a gig herself. And sometimes even when she does.

And, yeah, that girl can play some harp, for sure.
