Critics' Picks
BEST OVERALL MUSIC PERFORMANCE: Trombone Shorty at Tropical Heatwave

Boasting the chops of a jazz virtuoso and the showmanship of a young soul star, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews turned in an unbeatable performance at this year’s Tropical Heatwave. The 21-year-old trombonist/trumpeter and his band Orleans Avenue offered a boisterous blend of funk, hip-hop, jazz and rock that ranged from a New Orleans second-line rendition of AC/DC’s “Back in Black” to a poignant “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Shorty had the crowd jumping, dancing and hoisting him on its shoulders after he leaped from the stage. He’ll return to Tampa to play WMNF’s New Year’s Eve Party.

There were a bunch of THs that can vouch for this: Me, Snookums, PaulC (if he was any more front-and-center he would have had to move Shorty's mic stand!), Freebo, Bluedog, Yehyourite, and Tybeedawg (did I forget anyone?).

Yay, Shorty! The boy is on fiya. Glad yall got to represent at that set at tropical heatwave. And I love being where PaulC was. As the night's 1st set progressed at the stanton moore trio at satchmo,I moved further forward as people joined us up front. I could've touched stanton's kit byt the last note. I love me some Troy.
