Review: Bob Dylan at the Ryman

By PETER COOPER
Staff Writer
Who: Bob Dylan and his band

Where: The Ryman Auditorium

When: Wednesday, Sept. 19

What happened: Holy cow. Dylan put on a stupendous show. He enunciated, he played guitar, he played keyboards, he interacted with his bandmates (including multi-instrumentalist Don Herron, who played for years across the alley from the Ryman at Robert’s Western World as a member of BR549), and his performance rang with humor and depth and musicality and all such good things. Jack White of the White Stripes showed up to help on a staggering, bluesy version of “Meet Me In The Morning,” and Elvis Costello played a surprise opening set.

Highlights: The aforementioned “Meet Me In The Morning,” in which White mustered the courage to stand next to an icon of popular music, sing with soul and deliver some tremendous lead guitar work; An emotional take on “You’re A Big Girl Now” that will have bootleggers scrambling for copies for years to come; A funky, Motown-like, show-closing version of “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

Surprises: Everything in every Dylan show is a surprise. He doesn’t stick to regular set lists, to click-track tempos or to anything else. He’s not a stick-to kind of fellow. The biggest surprise is that a guy (Is Dylan just a guy? Surely there’s a better term) who is 66 years old and has been making essential music on albums for 45 years is able to show up in Nashville and play a concert like this. His voice is ravaged and rough, but he was so present, so spry and smart and engaged… people left the Ryman with big, goofy grins on their faces. It was an excellent and generous performance.

Bottom line: OK, consider this for a moment. Bob Dylan didn’t do “Like A Rolling Stone,” “All Along The Watchtower,” “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35,” “Positively 4th Street,” “The Times They Are A’Changin’,” “It Ain’t Me Babe,” “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Tangled Up In Blue,” “Maggie’s Farm” and dozens of other essentials, yet he wound up putting on his best Nashville show in… gosh, who knows? At the end of the night, folks were saying, “Oh, yes, and remember Elvis Costello’s surprise showing?” I mean, come on… “Remember” Elvis Costello’s surprise showing? By the way, Elvis spent much of Dylan’s show watching and listening from the balcony, right by the soundboard.

anyone know where to get Dylan shows? I'd love to hear this one. I'm amazed it was the first live Meet Me in the Morning, love that tune.

This is also intriuging

The first thing that jumped out at me was that he's playing guitar again. And it sounds like a great show. I've only seen him a couple of times but have read a million reviews and articles. And the thing about Dylan is that every show people think it was either great or it sucked. The 'Real Live' album I think is really good, and I don't think I've read one good review of it. I was lucky enough to win tickets to the MTY Unplugged performance. Half the reviews thought it was a travesty and the other half thought it was a religious experience. (I wouldn't go that far, but it was damn good.)

The man is just Dylan......that's the only way to describe it.

Whoever goes to see him, hope you have fun.

FOMS !!! actually post FOMS regret already maybe? I was offered a ticket to Dylan and Elvis Costello in a small arena here in CT for Sept 30 and turned it down cause I am planning on going to Atlantic City for the MidAtlanticBlues Fest.
Figured I was not that overwhelmed with Dylan at Jfest and as much as I love Elvis ....I could see alot more music over two days and bonus hang with the fishheads in NJ for the Rads on Sat nite.....I now not only want to be in NOLA for the Fat's release party and the Congo Square Festival and in Florida for the Hollywood Clambake with PBS and Bonerama and in CO for Phil and Friends but now I also want to just stay home for Dylan and Elvis....what a weekend and I am not unhappy about going to AC........but I think I need to make a live music lovers anonymous meeting very soon.....

I agree, Scoop...it is either good Bob or evil Bob...having seen him several times over the years I have had the pleasure and misfortune of both but when his is on, he is on-no doubt about dat.

I second the emotion about whoever gets to see him this time around, go have fun it sounds like you will get a great show.

This is a great book. Dylan gave Ratso complete access for this tour and then kind of changed his mind as he's known to do right before it started so it's more about the writer's struggle to get backstage each night and his relationship with the band/dylan/management. He's on tour and following the band, sometimes he doesn't even know where they are playing next.

It's pretty entertaining, Almost Famous-esque.

i saw dylan in albuquerque in august. it was a great show. he is playing guitar typically on the first 4-5 songs (depends on what set list) then switches to keyboard. his band is about as tight as i have seen in the last 10 years. there are shows available (slsk.org or dylantree.com both have a lot) there are several current shows on each of these sights (slsk.org requires a software download and it is well worth it).

Larry Sloman is this guy's real name I'm not sure if it would qualify as great literature but it's very entertaining.

Don't really need to be cloned cause it would be different unshared experiences ... Need Scotty to beam me up and then down to FLA on Sat and then up and then down in NOLA that night, couldn't make CO me thinks... but then up again on Sunday and down in NJ for Kenny Neal and then one last up and then down in CT near home for Dylan/Costello...but Scotty was sent unsuccessfully into space :( and I don't know anybody on the new crew?
Still thanks sissy for the moment of fantasy :D

Saw Bob and Elvis last night. I had seen Elvis before but never solo. Very good but too short. He should headline a solo tour.

Bob had a cookin' band. They really rocked it up on some of the songs. Bob was Bob. You either like him or not. I really enjoyed him. The new songs sounded especially good.

If anybody wants a copy please email me stynger 1 at aol.
