I'm signing up for a conferenece in Hilton Head, SC in January (last week). The closest I've been to HH is NOLA and Orlando, FL.

One of the features of this trip is either golf at the Old South Golf Resort or fishing with "a local fishing charter".

Both my coworker and I love to fish and golf. Does anyone have any input, opinions, advice?

We've both fished in Montana, Alaska (halibut, silvers, and kings), Oregon (salmon and steelhead), California (yellowtail, rock cod), and Mexico (tuna, marlin, swordfish). We've golfed in Orlando, Tampa, Vegas, Phoenix, Palm Springs, Monterey, Portland, and here.

Neither one of us have been to Carolinas at all.

I think either would be good. I'm not a golfer, but I think if the hype is correct golf is the way to go. For some reason, the golfers I know love to do it in SC. Hilton Head is supposed to be really nice. If I were there, I'd be playing tennis or dancing the shag.

You might want to check the fishing reports and see what is running in January. Fishing always trumps golf for me. ;)

Chartered with Stray Cat several years ago. In fact caught 3 citations with them. Great Captain Here is the link http://www.straycatcharter.com/

Stipers are red hot in January. The fishing is great for Bluefish, Mackerel, and Tarpon as well. I would opt for fishing but then again I always would.

Best Pizza joint in the land - New York City Pizza - Must try it!

Truffels - great dessert place plus good wine.

Alligator Grill - good sushi & island type fare.

Kenny B's - awesome Cajun place. Best Po Boy I've ever had outside New Orleans.

Amigo's - fantastic Mexican joint that serves the local Hispanic population.

Pepper Porch (off island) - fun restaurant

Catch 22, Sunset Grille, Sage Room - all upscale places. Sage room has an awesome bar.

Frankie Bones - great steak

As far as fishing goes there is a great tackle & bait shop in Sea Pines - near the Salty Dog. Check them out & they will set you in the right direction.

see I knew I could count on you guys for help.
Especially the peanut gallery. I was counting on that.
When we sign up for the conference we have to commit to one or t'other on fishing or golf.
Now because I always can talk my way around those kinds of rules last minute, we can prolly change it up, but no sense doing that if I can just figure out what the best way is.
Really good idea about calling a charter in HH and ask them what the fishing will be like in late Jan.
Sweet idea. Why didn't I think of that?

I'm baking a nice chunk of silver salmon caught 2 weeks ago on kodiak island tonight for dinner. mmmmmmmm.

Thanks for this stuff Mojo! awesome!
another question for you:
This group likes to party usually at least one night.
2 years ago we ended up in a Salsa night club in Phoenix in the wee hours.
Do you know anything about clubbing at HH? (I read something about a place called Monkey Business)

In January you've got to consider that the odds are high of an offshore trip be cancelled due to high seas. I spent a winter in Charleston working on a survey vessel (85 ft) and we'd sit at the dock for days on end waiting to get offshore. But there were a few good days between fronts.

Fish MT, come visit us to golf :)

I think I'm going to golf with the conference, and we have one extra morning to either golf or fish.
Trouble is I think most of the fishing trips are in the afternoon.

EDIT: and I can come visit you guys to golf, fish, ski, mountain bike, etc.
I take you guys are on the west slope of the mountains, how far from Targhee? Driggs?

Yep, you can do all those things here (I was just thinking the fishing at Hilton Head is pretty different from the fishing here, fishing here wouldn't be something new for you) :) We're in Driggs right now, on Ski Hill Road on the way up to Targhee in fact. Jeff's family business develops these golf/resort communities, so for now there's golfing at Teton Springs, in a few years there will be a Greg Norman course at River Rim (plenty of fishing there now). Targhee and Jackson Hole for skiing in the winter, come visit anytime :)

Monkey Business is pretty cool if there is a good band playing. (I saw the DDBB there a couple years ago) If no good music is playing @ The Monkey - go to Hilton Head Brewing Company. There are 4 bars clumped together - cant remember the names. There is a Irish joint, a lounge, & sports bar. Fun! Also, there is a good bar (I cant remember the name) on the 2nd traffic circle. Across from the Holiday Inn on the Beach. If your looking at the HI its on your left. Usually hammered when I'm there. Locals hang out there.

Casey's Sports bar is fun too. Great sports bar - good wings too.

The Big Bamboo alos has live music every night - not as high end talent as MB but fun.

Jazz Corner is an older crowd (Like 60 & up) but is fun in a pinch if ya take a crowd. Call ahead!

Check out this joint http://www.trufflescafe.com/menu.htm
That Blonde dessert is the best thing I've ever eaten. FANTASTIC!

Seriously...you must try New York City Pizza. I've eaten pizza all over the world & NYC Pizza is a Top 5 pie joint:

In no particular order -

Grimaldi's in Brooklyn NYC

NYC Pizza in Hilton Head SC

Homeslice in Austin TX

Wick's in Louisville KY

San Marzano Hong Kong

The Clintons are usually participants in an invitation-only annual weekend forum/family getaway on Hilton Head over New Years, called "The Renaissance Weekend".

Keep an eye out for John Mellencamp while you are on Hilton Head. He's lived there awhile, and was often spotted walking the beach with his kids.

Very interesting, but this is not what that was a reference to. It's a long way up that staircase; it has twelve steps.
