K-Ville
Category: Movies, TV, Celebrities
The television show K-Ville had its debut this week. I thought it was terriffic. To be honest I watched out of loyalty, my wife works as a set dresser and I wanted to support the show that is supporting us. I wasn't expecting much because Hollywood has had a difficult time capturing New Orleans in the past. That being said the show and it's writers really got us post Katrina here in the real k-ville
There were moments so real I had lived them. The conversation the couple has about living in Atlanta is one I had with my wife and many couples we know had. The little daughter being afraid of the rain, we all live that now. I have a friend who is a grown woman, a singer, but if it's raining hard she will cancel her gig no questions asked, been like that since Katrina. To be honest I was moved not quite to tears but nearly several times. The cop who is angry at his partner for having deserted him, has anger issues and drinks on the job. I know that guy, he is a cop, lawyer, musician, writer, cook, waiter. He is all of us who stayed and are staying trying to work through the hard times and enjoy the good times.
I heard that the New York Times and the USA Today had bad reviews calling the show unrealistic. When was the last time either writer lived here in K-ville. Is the show too violent? Well the sad truth is they only have one murder a show, we are actually averaging two and three a day some weeks. New Orleans is in real trouble and this show shines a light on how hard things are and the spirit it is taking to overcome it. Neighbors actually do come together and celebrate their return as they did at the show's end.The shows lead Anthony Andersen is likeable and brings a lot of heart,( an essential ingredient in playing a New Orleanian), to the role, you dig the guy, know somebody like him. Cole Hauser has the dug in attitude of those of us who remember who we were before the flood and how maybe we could have been more and want to be better people after the flood and more importantly when he said New Orleans East he said it like I do and not like Foghorn Leghorn. I was so excited that somebody got the accent right, I hadn't even hoped they would try. The cast was solid not overdoing it.
Check out Chris Rose's article about the show at nola.com this week. Chris stayed trhough the flood and wrote essays on life in New Orleans which made him a Pulitzer Prize runner-up. His thoughts were similar to mine and I was glad a local write felt the same and wrote about it.
Tune in to K-ville. Folks around the country always ask what they can do to help New Orleans. K-ville is here giving people jobs, spending money to film and to live. Eating in our restaurants, going to see music in our bars. All that and they made a good show. If you want to help, tune in and check out life in K-ville.
peace, love and jazz fest,
Paul

Dear Paul:
I have been following your exploits in your blog through postings on the Jazz Fest chat room. I am a Threadhead, and I am a sponsor of the annual “Patry” that you played at last year. In your latest posting, I became aware of your wife’s work with the TV show K-Ville as a set dresser. This is the reason that I am writing you.
I am a New Orleans glass artist with my own glass-blowing studio in Algiers Point, Rosetree Blown Glass Studio. I have been an artist in New Orleans for the past 25 years. I have also been a vendor selling my glass art at Jazz Fest for the past 25 years in the Contemporary Crafts section.
I am hoping that the producers of the show are using as much local talent as they can in support of the local economy. I would love to meet with your wife to see if any of my work can be used in the show. I think that it would be a nice addition to what I see in the series. I can also offer my studio up as a venue to do some of the filming in. It is a beautiful restored Art Deco movie theater that has 6000 square feet of space.
I would love to have you and Shelly come over to my studio and see the type of artwork that we create here. You can hop over on the ferry “At the Foot of Canal Street”, we are only 8 blocks from the landing. If you can’t make it, you can look at my website www.rosetreegallery.com . You will need a user ID—glass and password – customer to see the whole site.
I hope to see y’all soon,
Sincerely,
Mark
He should know who we & the patry are- he played there last fest....

Rosie, I'd offer the studio as a shooting (of the film kind) venue as well... lots of times in cop shows there is a scene where the baddies are at a swanky art show sipping cocktails and plotting their next heist. To get your building on screen would be a great marketing boost.
Oooh, and I've read a novel where the main character was a glass blower and one of his staff had a v-e-e-r-y unfortunate run in of a furnace kind with the bad guy. In fact the whole book was set around the glass studio. (Dick Francis if you like cheesy detective stories.)
Cheers.

Shattered (2000)
Successful glass blower Gerard Logan is friends with jockey Martin Stukely. Martin indirectly gives Gerard a videotape that becomes the object of an intensive search by a gang of bad guys. Gerard has to deal with the ruffians on his own because Martin has been killed in a racing accident. Gerard receives help from some unlikely quarters as he attempts to determine why the tape is so important.
All his books are cheesy mysteries, generally involving the wonderful world of horse racing.

Studio. Shows you how much Louisiana Music Factory is on my mind. And it gets real confusing how Rebirth recorded a CD at the Glass House making THAT a "glass studio".
By the way, there's not a baby to be found at the Baby Factory in Chicago and some say there is no Jazz at Jazz Fest. Reminds me of the old Ben and Jerry's jingle......there ain't no Frusen, there ain't no Gladje...there ain't no Haagen, there ain't no Dazs"

Not to quibbly but
"I can also offer my studio up as a venue to do some of the filming in"
Ending the sentence with a preposition will get you reprimanded by your grammer teacher and/or qualify you for a job with the Water Department in Chicago (Motto: "Gettin' da vote out")

Now you've reminded me of one of my favorite joikes.

Interesting.......
The better plot would be using a knife or sword made out of glass to "off"
someone and then throwing it in the furnace to melt.....
A little glass history----In 1291 the glass furnaces were moved from Venice to the island of Murano. The reason was twofold. One was the danger of fire from the furnaces. The city leaders wanted to make the city safer. Reason two was to isolate the glassblowers so they could not trade the glassmaking secrets outside the island. If a glassblower made it off the island, he was hunted down by assassins and had his hands cut off and it is also said that they were killed with a glass sword!
Updating this in a modern plot line would be tres cool!
