I feel sorry for the lady but sort of funny also. This is also why bands should charter the whole boat. This post is evidently not from a fishhead :p
Adding to the myriad of frustrations on this cruise were a band on board called ‘The Radiators’ with 260 enthusiasts and fans on board with them. This band took over the theatre every night for their group, and no others were allowed entry into the shows. The remainder of the 1500 passengers was deprived of the evening 'Las Vegas' type of shows that would have gone on in that theatre. If a passenger chose to view any of the talent performing, they were subjected to going into an overcrowded bar where there were not enough seats to facilitate the demand. My 70 year old mother was made to stand during some of these performances. The ship passed through some very turbulent waters and so standing to watch a band was extremely difficult for her. Needless to say she remained in her stateroom and watched television for the majority of her evenings onboard, something she could have accomplished for free in the comfort of her own home

On the one night that there was a ‘Las Vegas’ style show in the theatre The Radiators played by the pool. There was so much marijuana being smoked that there was literally a cloud hovering over the poolside area. I got a buzz just by walking by the area. It was totally blatant and nobody from the crew attempted to do anything about it for the sake of the other guest’s comfort. Overall this was by far the worst cruise or vacation that I have ever experienced. I have cruised on 5 separate Cruise Lines, most of them multiple times, and nothing compares to what I had to endure with NCL.

I do feel sorry for the lady and her mother, but did laugh at loud at the "marijuana haze/contact high" buzz. (Wow, I clicked on the link and read all the complaints against Norwegian Cruise Lines. What nightmares!)

I've never been on a cruise and if I was ever tempted, that Consumer Affairs page was enough to erase that temptation. That said, the Rads paragraphs were just 2 of about 14 from that lady who complained about everything from lousy service to too attentive service. You just can't please some people.

sounds like the Rythm Cruise didn't sell out, so they booked unknowing passengers without telling them! I read complaints on some of the other major lines...none so bad as NCL

one of the best concert experience i've ever had was jam cruise a few years ago. (the one with galactic, les claypool, ARU, keller williams and lots more.

i will definitely do another cruise. not jam cruise because of the $$$, but a regular cruise. it's amazing how cheap a cruise is.

i'm getting married soon and we're doing a cruise for a honeymoon.

And obviously they were good enough that they were willing to stay in the bar and stand up rather than go somewhere else.

Basically, a cruise ship a floating shopping mall stopping in different ports. I only ever went on a cruise once, and New Orleans was the last stop. That was my first trip to New Orleans, and that was seven years ago.

Basically, if you are interested in going on a cruise....go on a cruise. If you are interested on going on a music cruise - then you have to go on a REAL music cruise. Not a boat where they book one name of interest.

Delbert McClinton's Sandy Beaches Cruise and the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise are the two REAL music cruises to pick from.

I've been on Delbert's Cruise two times (and have tried for the past 3 years, but haven't made it cause of work). Both times have been the most amazing weeks I've ever had. Morning till...well, morning it's music all over the boat. Sometimes you don't even know what to choose. Delbert has more of a variety than LRBG....including Cajun, country, rock and roll and of course Blues! I know people who have been going on that cruise for 13 years in a row. I know one woman who goes on BOTH cruises each year and has been doing so for about that long. Put it this way -Delbert's cruise books out over 50 percent of the cabins for next year, before the current cruise is even over.

Other than JazzFest - it's the best music vacation you can have. Heck it's the best kind of vacation you can have if you ask me....sun, sea, friends and music...and lots of booze! And the occsional port of call.

It's a lot like you guys getting together with all the Threadheads in NOLA...same goes with the cruisers. I have so many close friends all over the country now because of those cruises....and have been introduced to so much amazing music that I'd never had known otherwise.

Everyone always asks "so where does the cruise go." If you ask a real cruiser the answer is - "who cares!" It's all about the music and the friends.

I highly recommend it.

A cruise is a way to go to all kinds of neat places, spend a long time getting there, and little time actually there. The exceptions being Alaska and Norway where you can take cruises to see the fjords or the glaciers. Because on those cruises, the neat places are not on land.

I'd agree. I would not clasify us as cruise people, but we did a combination land/cruise tour of Alaska and you're right, neither would have really sufficed on it's own.

Of course there was the formal night dinner with 30 - 40 foot seas and the small string quartet playing Nearer My Go To Thee!!! :D

I've cruised twice-once at 40 and once at 50. I loved it. And I especially loved Norwegian, which was the second cruise line. I love swimming in the saltwater pool after breakfast. I love stopping in all the various ports and touring, snorkeling, catamaraning, sailing, etc. I'm not a big shopper so that's not the appeal for me. all the cool ports is what I loved.

But a music cruise just doesn't appeal to me. If I'm cruising I want to enjoy the cruise aspects of the trip. And I would be sleeping the days away after patrying all night!

See . . . that's exactly why I've never been attracted to going on a cruise - I WANT to spend time in all kinds of neat places! I don't wanna be trapped on a huge buffet barge with squillions of annoying chowderheads and their kids.

I think the only cruise I would even consider would be a music cruise, because at least that would help the time on the boat be not as filled with tourons - unless Miss Cranky Complainalot and her mother were there. :D

We did Jam Cruise the first year in 2004 and it was the best time ever. They had booked a kind of rundown old cruise ship that was pretty small and they were pretty disorganized because it was the first one they put on. I still had the time of my life. We went from Ft. Lauderdale to the Bahamas then Key West. Everything was really informal, everyone sat wherever there was an open seat at the meals including the bands so you really got a chance to hang out with all the musicians. They use much bigger "real" cruise ships now. Our lineup was out this world, Franti, Galactic, Rebirth, Bisco, Claypool,KDTU and more I can't even think of. Rebirth did the first set and officially opened the weekend on the deck as we sailed out of Fla. It was so rough, this little boat was rocking all over and it was hard to stand. The guy that plays the big Tuba actually fell off of the makeshift little stage. the band stopped for a second to see if he was okay and then they spontaneously went into this big long funky jam to "Rock The Boat". It was perfect. I have never seen happier people anywhere.Nobody did any real excursions. We played soccer with Franti and Spearhead on the beach in Nassau, played Bingo with Karl Densen. Everyone was smoking pot right out in the open the whole time. You wouldn't beleive the amt. of drug use on that boat. Everyone was up all night, one night the Captain of the ship was on stage singing(in very broken English) with Franti at like 2am. In Key West about half the boat went to a local bar where Donna The Buffalo was playing. that afternoon was an "excursion" highlight. I am smiling just thinking about it. I tried to book Jamcruise again for this year but it was sold out but I kind of think it would never be like that first crazy year again anyway so maybe it was for the best.

Yes, that was the 2005 cruise after ours. The cruise line company had notified the DEA of the drug use on board on our ship and the day we returned to Ft. Lauderdale DEA agents boarded! It was insane, they were making all of these announcements that everyone had to line up for immigration check at 7am. When we came out of our room there were all these guys with DEA jackets on with dogs. It was the end of the cruise so I think most people had used up their supplies but I saw one poor half asleep guy get arrested. I read that DEA officials admitted they monitered the Jamcruise boards prior to the next cruise because they knew there was so much drug use the first year and they wanted to nip it in the bud for 2005. I thought of that when we were all sharing our tips on how to smuggle stuff into the fairgrounds on the bored. I was just waiting for security to check out my suntan lotion bottle!

that's the one i went on.

we got to jacksonville the day before and got a room.
the next day, we left the hotel to head to the port and smoked the whole way there. when we got there, they had two cops checking id's of everyone in the car before we could pull into the port. that scared the buzz right out of us.
i ate a hand full of shrooms when we got there right before i got out of the car.
it took forever to go through everything to get on the ship.
after about an hour, i was flying high and started seeing cops chase people and bust people everywhere.
someone with the cruise line came through and told everybody they had dogs before you could get on. it was crazy how many drugs you saw just laying around from where people ditched their stuff.
once we got on the ship, it was all good.
luckily, some folks got stuff on the boat and hooked us up :D
haven't done shroom since then...well, maybe once at bonnaroo last year and haven't smoked since bonnaroo this year.

wow - scared straight!
what a bummer of a bon voyage.

well like I said I was thinking of doing Jamcruise again but it was sold out so I am doing JAM IN THE DAM instead. I have never been to Amsterdam but I've been doing my research and it sounds like a crazy place. It's a great lineup for us too. I have been and loved it (and really wasn't into any of the bands the year I went, 2 years ago STS9, Disco Biscuits, Umphrey's, The Duo. Galactic was supposed to play that year but it was the year they decided to make it only one weekend instead of two so they had to cancel a couple of acts)

Feel free to email me with questions, bartgaston@yahoo.com or ask here, be glad to help

I highly recommend the Owl Hotel, 3 blocks from the venues in the Leidesplein District (Sp?), cool area near the parks, museums, etc. http://www.owl-hotel.nl/

Small rooms for the most part, relatively cheap, but like NO, you don't spend time in your room but to sleep.

Also, everything you would ever need to know (like here) is on their message board. Use the search feature and it'll really help you.

I know this sounds crazy but Amsterdam is tough to get around in. I highly advise copying this grid map and then laminating it. I did and it was the best thing I did (even though I was mocked for doing so by our entire party on the flight over. They came to see the light in a hurry! LOL). >>> http://www.amsterdam.info/print/map/ We are currently moving and I ran across mine like two days ago and it felt good again holding all 11 laminates again! :)

If you are interested in smoke, do yourself a favor and check out the Cannabis Cup winners from October/November (or that time of year at least). Copy down the winners and check out what those shops have to offer and the varieties that won. The Willie Nelson (the winner a couple of years ago) was hmmm, hmmm. One thing to remember here is don't be in awe of it all, only try and find the best. They have crap for sale also. The Greenhouse Coffee Shop was my favorite. I had to put a ban on our party from purchasing anything else after about Day 3. I made everyone empty their pockets and we realized nobody could smoke that much if their life depended on it. HA

The smart shops sell interesting types of shrooms as well. The truffles will make you giggle all day and were a favorite among the group. The Hawaiians are the top of the line and I didn't find them very strong but I weigh alot so and that makes a difference. The people in the coffee houses and smart shops are extremely nice and friendly. Actually, everyone there was. It was really nice.

Rembrandt and Van Gogh Museums were really cool as was Vondel Park. I would imagine the Park is beautiful in the summertime.

You can take a train to one of the little towns on the North Sea. It's not far and cheap. We were supposed to do this but couldn't pull ourselves away from the city after already traveling so far. There's also soccer matches within one hour train ride as well that are supposed to be great fun. http://english.ajax.nl/web/show Also, you put a hold on soccer tickets, and don't pay for them in advance. I thought that was so strange. You show up an hour early and then pay them, very odd.

The weather this time of year is really cold. Take the biggest jacket you have. I took jeans and other long pants and the jeans were the only thing that would hold off the wind. It's chilly to say the least. We went for 8 days and saw the sun on one afternoon. Unfortunately, it was the only day we decided to sleep in so we really only saw it for about one hour. Take hats and a scarf for certain.

The canal cruise was fun. Let one of those bike guys pull you in a buggy. I'll never forget all six of us being pulled by 3 bike guys in buggies. If you can't laugh at that, you're hopeless.

There's a casino if you like that sort of thing off of Leidesplein Square. I don't but my buddies do and said it was okay but not great.

There was great indian and thai food all over the place. The food was really better than any of us expected having not heard great things. Great shopping if you like that sort of thing as well.

After the second fest, the Black Crowes played 3 shows. We ran into Chris Robinson and Kate Hudson with their bundled up little boy on the street and chatted for a second before the day of their first show. They seemed really nice. Check and see if the Paradiso has any good acts, it's beautiful. Check it out even if they don't. The Melkweg is across the street from the location the festival is held and a pretty interesting bar with music. Check it out as well.

I didn't even mention the music. The festival is great. Two good sized venues side by side, it's not oversold, you can come and go as you please. Everyone is very helpful and on the same page. A great experience!

Thanks for all of that info, I am printing and saving it and the maps. I will email you because I have lots more questions and will have even more as March gets closer.

No problem, I can help out for sure. I am one of those anal travel people who tries to get everything they need in order before they leave.

You'll love it (and by the way, greatest present ever!)

Well we'd make a good pair, I love Franti too! We're seeing him in a couple of weeks in NY. It will be a great Christmas surprise, I am dying to tell him. Everyday I read more about Amsterdam and now I'm bursting to share it. My gifts frequently do revolve around trips, we have all the "stuff" we could ever use so all I ever want to spend money on is travel, I will max out the Visa card with trips but not for other crap.
Three years ago I suprised abitaboy with a trip to Langerado (Franti always plays) and now we have become regulars at that one too. Have you been? It's become my favorite fest. We'll have to miss it this year since it's pretty close to JITD, and with three kids it's too hard to get babysitting for both. but if you haven't been to that, run, don't walk.

Here's hoping it's still around in about 4 years when I take my ass home for good. That will be when the festing is kicked up in a major way. And langerado and telluride and jam in the dam and high sierra and crawfish fest are on the short list! I did get to see Franti in north Arkansas this past spring. It was his first trip there and he loved it and we loved havig him there.
