So, I finally lucked out with a "work" conference in a city with a music scene. I'll be in Austin for the Dumpstaphunk show. Any one in the area going or planning to go to that show? Any Parrish Room reviews?
Thanks,
Sha

When I was thinking about going to funk fest this summer, some of the shows were at the Parish. Looks pretty sweet. Have fun, sha. When is it?

It's Friday, 9/28. I think I have a dinner meeting that night with a bunch of college admissions deans. This will be the first time that I don't hang out with them drinking port after dinner. Heck depending on what time things start at the Parish (which looks to be 2 blocks from the hotel!), I may just bolt after dinner! :D
Now, the big question, do I make a hit and run trip to Austin this weekend to see My Morning Jacket at ACL?
So much music, so little time (and money)...

Finally made it to Austin...sadly for business and pleasure rather than just for pleasure. Anyhoo...
D-phunk at the Parish...with horns. Yeah you rite. Turns out the horn section that played on the album was in town (I think they're Austinites) so in addition to the normal sweaty funk throw down that is Dumpstaphunk, things were a little more nasty with the horns. Despite being in business attire for the entire show (funny the odd looks you get when you're dressed inappropriately), I had a great time preparing my work clothes for a trip to the dry cleaners. :)
I hung out after the show for a while (thanks to Tony for briniging me back stage) and got to say hello to all the guys and meet some other folks from the convention who knew where to be that night. Even better, 1) the guy (from the convention) was tall ;) , 2) based in Richmond, and 3) a self-proclaimed music addict. He'll be making his first trip to Jazz Fest in '08. I intend to train him well.
Rewind the clock to before the show and I was down on Congress Street with some co-workers after a lengthy cocktail hour with some business partners. We walk into a(nother) Mexican restaurant for a late dinner and I see this guy seated up a ways at a table along with a little boy and a woman with long blond hair. I look back at the guy, whose long dark hair dangled from beneath an off-white hat. I look at my co-workers and say, "I'll be back." I walk toward the family and confirm that Banzai Bill (and Susan and Devin) were in the house!! It had been 2 years (I think) since I'd seen him last and even longer since I'd last seen Susan. What a treat!! They were finishing dinner, but hung out for a little while to chat. That surprise visit had me smiling from ear to ear for the rest of the night. :D
All in all, Austin was OK. We didn't have much in the way of free time and other than D-phunk, I didn't venture out to hear any other music. With any luck, next year's line up for ACL will include some of my favorites and I'll make a return trip.
Coll on the D-Phunk horns, and very cool on Banzai Bill.
He must have been very shocked to see you.
-or- cool on the D-Phunk horns...
Yay Sha!

Yeah, Bill was pretty surprised. :) He'd been on my mind a lot recently because of a book that I'm reading - The World That Made New Orleans by Ned Sublette. The intro to the book mentions that the author went to Cuba with some folks from WWOZ. This was before the storm and I just knew that if Bill hadn't gone along on the trip that he had helped out with getting them there and back. And surenuff, he had helped them with the trip.
He mentioned an upcoming trip to NO and a good chance at coming back for the Fest, I think.
