I only saw them once about 3 years ago. Now I see from their website that they've got a contract with a resurrected Stax records and have a full-time singer. Has anyone seen/heard them lately, and what did you think? Somewhat more specifically, can you dance to what they're playing? Thanks.

I saw them at the 50 years of Stax celebration here in Memphis. They did a cover of "I Thank You" which was okay. They seemed to be talented musically. Any cover band that played that tune could be danced to, and that was about all I thought of it. They did manage a good amount of sound from just a few pieces, though.

Thanks, staxsun. Still on the fence, will see if anyone else pipes up.
They used to be a pretty funky organ trio, all insrumental. Then last year, they started doing more vocal oriented soul. I last saw them summer of '06- first half of the show was funky, old Soulive with Krasno rippin' some good riffs. Second half had a vocalist come out and do covers and some decent soul. It's a different direction for them, but definitely not as unique.
btw- Bonnie, there's a media player on their website with some of the newer stuff: http://www.soulive.com/

Yeah, it was after listening to those clips and reading of their new direction that I had second thoughts about going to see them. I'm into the funk, but not soul. (Although the singer, the band and the songs sound excellent, soul's just not my thing.)
