Legendary Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti, (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070906/ts_nm/italy_pavarotti_dc_7;_ylt=AsMcI6QSyCmtUuWFU84AlEv0 kPUI)who brought opera to the masses with his powerful voice and jovial personality, died on Thursday of pancreatic cancer, aged 71.

Although his health had been failing for a year, the death of the bearded tenor, known as "Big Luciano" because of his 127 kg (280 lb) bulk, saddened everyone from impresarios and critics of to fans who could barely afford tickets.

He was my musical hero in high school. :D (Yes, I was a dork. Shut up.)

I really enjoyed the way that he presented classical music, yet was not afraid to show appreciation for, and to perform with popular artists.

Yes - NPR played a clip of Pavarotti performing Nessun Dorma as a duet with String, very cool.

RIP Luciano. I always thought you had a New Orleans soul.

you know what Pete? I agree. We just watched his Pavarotti and Friends DVD's a couple of weeks ago and man, he was so full of life, charisma and passion. This one really hurt my heart. He was also my Nonna's favorite and she died last year; she used to listen to his cd's over and over again...Pavarotti has been very special to my family.
RIP Luciano...you will be greatly missed :(

I agree. Pavarotti lived large -- he was definitely a New Orleans type of guy.
