Hey All,
We're planning on making our first trek for the 2008 Fest and would like opinions and advice on where to stay. I've been reading the guidebooks and looking online. Our main criteria are clean rooms, safe rooms and neighborhood, and convenient location. And economy, too.
Not asking for much, huh? ;)
We regard atmosphere in our rooms as a bonus if the above are met - figure the city is so rich in atmosphere that stepping out the front door will satisfy us.

I've heard good things about Creole House and I like the location (we stay a couple of doors away).
North Rampart Street is generally considered a sort of "iffy" neighborhood, although I do always frequent Donna's Brass Band Club at N. Rampart and St. Anne and have never had a problem there.
By the way, you're definitely right about there being plenty of "atmosphere" right out your door no matter where you stay. Chances are very little time will be spent in your hotel room once you realize the infinite music choices available every single day and night!!

I'll second the Chateau le Moyne. Nothing overly fancy, but rooms were comfortable and the location is pretty great. Nice courtyard and pool area if your into that.

Many folks book something now that is cancellable. Some places have special event cancellation policies so always check that. Then later, if a deal comes up on hotwire or priceline, they'll hear about it here and book a deal. That's what we did with chateau lemoyne last year. I think our room was 120 a night thru hotwire. Since it's your first visit for fest, I would suggest staying in or near the quarter so you can take advantage of the instores at Louisiana Music Factory on the days between. But otoh, parking is expensive at the hotels--about $30 a night. Also visit swagland if you haven't already.
A few of us had booked Hotel Royal for our backup hotel last year and we really had to work hard to get our money back. We did it but only after some complaints were filed with the BBB and the new orleans visitors bureau. They say they have a new mgr but i'm not so sure. Wherever you stay, you'll have big fun in our favorite city!
Holiday Inn on Royal is a good one location-wise, close to Decatur & LMF. It has a good bar & indoor pool, often has deals listed on easyclicktravel.com, expedia, etc.
Where to stay really depends on what exactly you want to do while in town- some like to hang on Bourbon, some like to stay far away from Bourbon...

how long are yall going to stay....
if you have the time arriving thursday before the first weekend,
and departing on the monday after second weekend would be
a good experience....
please spend some evenings on frenchmen st....the best music street
in the city with at least 7 good music clubs, and some fine restaurants...
there is a little botique type hotel called the frenchmen right in the
heart of the music scene....
by the way LMF=Lousiana Music Factory....the funkiest little record store,
that has great live bands, and free admission.on the daze between
the 2 weekends of jazzfest....also every nite of the week there is
multiple music choices of high caliber,....and ass shakin fun...

Of the ones you mention, the only one I've stayed at is the Holiday Inn FQ on Royal. I stayed there half of my last fest visit. It's an older hotel, but they've done a pretty good job of remodeling it except the elevators. It's not a deal-breaker, though, as you don't spend that much time riding up and down. It is very convenient to all of the French Quarter and close to Canal. I liked its closeness to Louisiana Music Factory and House of Blues, where I went to Piano Night and the Ponderosa Stomp. Even though parking was expensive (they all are), I liked the ability to have in-and-out at one price and to park near an elevator that goes straight to the room. This wouldn't matter if you fly in (you don't really need a car). I would think it would be extremely easy to get a taxi from the hotel, as you wouldn't have some of the traffic troubles that can happen if you are deep in the Quarter. You are also very close to all the streetcars at this hotel. Very close to restaurants that range from McDonald's to the Four Star types. A Walgreen's is within a few feet of the hotel. This can be a big plus.
I've personally stayed at the Holiday Inn FQ and the Hampton on Carondelet. Both are fine. The Hampton is probably a bit nicer, the Holiday location is probably a bit better.
For the ones which didn't generate opinions here, check tripadvisor.com. Just pretend it's ice skating, an ignore the best and worst reviews.

hi, butland, I've stayed at some of the places on your list, but it was so long ago that my input would not be relevant. One thing to consider is the length of your stay.
If it is an extended visit, a simple consideration like laundry, for example, can become an unwelcome expense. I had a pair of pants laundered by a hotel laundry and the charge for washing them was more than the pants were worth. Shoulda thrown them in the trash! :)
Some good suggestions here! I like swag's ice skating analogy re:tripadvisor
Since this is your first trip, it's great to see you do your homework early. I'm sure you will have a successful trip!

I think just about everyone, including us, who stayed at the Chateau Lemoyne this year had a positive experience. Can't beat the location, rooms were large, and the pool area was nice :)

Hey! A Creole House was our spot pre-K. It's a great place but it is already booked. We are staying at the St. Pierre for the first time this year. I spoke to them on the phone - very nice, very professional. I have a good feeling about it! We got a good price as well.
It also depends if you are looking for a full service hotel or B&B. It's NOLA - sometimes you need to go with the flow!! ;)
Welcome to the fun!!

Chateau Lemoyne was nice. we stayed a block up the street at Chateau Sonesta- the rooms were huge and the hotel was more luxurious, also had a courtyard pool with a bar, and redfish grill is in the building as well. All for about $15/nite more.

Thanks to all for your advice. After reading your comments and the online rating sites I decided to go with the Hampton Inn. It's booked for both weekends and I just booked flights this AM so the big stuff is taken care of. Thanks again for all your help and we'll see you there if if we don't know it's you. :)
