jazz fest collectibles
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been a collector for over 30 years. Can anyone give me information regarding the jazz fest promo posters? I am a looking for some specific years.
Does anyone know of a site besides ebay that has collectibles for sale? including jazz fest posters, first day postal cover letters (cachets) etc.??

Good luck, I've asked about promo posters here a couple of times with no luck. Ebay is the only place I've seen any, and that's been very few.

There is also the <nojazzfestart.com> site. They tend to be pricey, presently selling a double signed 07 Congo Square, still available on Art4Now, for more than the A4N price, but they have posters that you may not be able to find elsewhere and a selection of other art that you may find interesting.

Good question, I really need to inventory. 95% of everything is in tubes.
My best guess is I have one promo from the 70s, missing two years from the 80s and everything else up to 2007. I should still have extra posters from 1988 to 2007.

Contact Bergen Gallery on Royal Street. They deal only in poster art there and, for years, have been one of the leading purveyors of JazzFest posters. Since my collection is as complete as I care to make it, I haven't visited the place my last couple of trips down there. Tip: Buy the ones with the images you like, not the ones you think will increase in value.

Thanks for the thought. I don't look very good in skirts, and it would have to be bigger. I do have that shirt but only one. I'm really looking for t-shirts from the seventies or eighties. I'm an XL or XXL, but I'm not as picky about size if they're old.
We are talking about the promo posters here, from Schlitz, Old Stlye, and Miller. Not the Art4Now Fest posters.

I have all the cachets except for Bolden and Armstrong, I'll never part with them. Desperatly seeking these missing ones.
If any of y'all ever -EVER- see any of these I'll pay $$$ for a set. I had eight, now only one. The others were destoyed or given away. From 1991, and maybe later, the greatest dink holder...

Attention Fest Poster Shoppers! There is currently a large selection of Art4Now Jazz Fest posters, including several remarques, for sale on ebay. There is also a 1996 promo poster with that Picasso-like image they used for a couple of years. Definitely worth a look if you are hoping to add one to your collection.

I use the following string for searching E-bay for Jazz Fest posters while it catches a few others, it never seems to miss the New Orleans ones: (of course add or subtract any extra years according to your interests)
(2007,2006,2005,2004,2003,2002,2001,2000, 1999,1998,1997,1996,1995,1994) jazz (poster,print)

So, if your for real, send another email with your phone number. Lets talk, its the only way I would trade with someone that only has two postings. We can always meet face to face in 2008.

Blitzzz, You are right, "New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival" will catch most of the items when search descriptions."
But I have found that finding real bargains on E-bay is often a matter of widening the search enough to catch items that the seller has not fully or properly described. To do this it is important to take advantage of the Ebay default syntax for boolean searches.
This is best shown by example, the following search string (a simplied version of the above):
(2007,2006,2005) jazz (poster,print)
will find items that have the following in the item title:
The word Jazz and
One of 2007, 2006 or 2006 and
One of Poster or Print
Here are some current titles that your search did NOT find that would be found by mine:
1996 Jazz Fest Poster (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270167948896)
2002 Jazz fest Print of Wynton Marsalis Mint condition (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280154362973)
Of course, expanding your search to include descriptions does catch the first one but not the second.
In fact, despite that I have brought attention to them here, I will bet that these posters go for a little less than market value just because the sellers did not include "New Orleans" in the item title. The 2002 poster will probably be the bigger bargain because this seller also mistyped "New Orleans" as "Neworleans" in the decription.

The free "beer" promo posters.
Looking for anything before 1980.
I collect the Jazz Fest posters, not the promos, however I do have one from 1976 (I think) - no date just a copyright - and I don't know why or where I got it from. It is a Schlitz in very good shape. Some of the artists listed on it are:
Jerry Lee Lewis and Big Joe Turner with Dave Bartholemew Band at the S.S. President
Albert King, Muddy Waters, Gatemouth Brown and Johnny Shines
at the Warehouse
Sweet Emma and her Preservation Hall Jazz Band at the Royal Sonesta
B.B. King, Wild Magnolias at Municipal Auditorium
Fest at the Louisiana Heritage Fairgrounds April 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 & 18.
I guess the Fest used to be earlier. Let me know if you are interested in thisor I could donate it to the raffle.

No doubt, I saw where Bobby Blue Bland was opening for Widespread tonight in Memphis, pretty cool.
I also had thought all of these years he wrote Lovelight and just found out he didn't. Who knew?

E-mail me your address and you can have it. I swear the only reason I knew I had it was because I was cleaning up my office last week and found the tube wedged behind my credenza. I was going to throw it away. My wife tolerates my Jazz Fest Posters but this would never make it in the house anyway. If it brings you some enjoyment, buy me a couple of beers if we meet up at the Fest next year and we'll call it even.

As Michelino accurately predicted, E-bay Item number: 280154362973, the Wynton poster from 2002 is currently at $60, 1 bid, with two hours to go. The same seller has a Mahailia Jackson and a Harry Connick, Jr. that are both currently at $70, (look at "Seller's other items.) This is one of a group of about 80 jazz posters I inherited. The owner was a piano player, and his wife at the time was very involved with Dixieland (Heritage) Hall in the 60s and 70s. They were all stuffed together in an old metal trunk. There are Jazzfest promo posters from this 72 through 1980, usually more than one copy of each. There was also some other dixieland related prints.
Anyhow, the reason I was asking y'all about this 72: I can't find any information on it, or any other poster from that year.
I sold a few of the posters on eBay recently, but I really would like to sell all the rest of the Jazzfest posters (60 of them) in one batch. I put pics of most of them online

Ebay is likely your best resource as they've created a large community of taste where you can find someone who wants almost anything, but having so many duplicates makes this tricky. A dealer is going to want to low ball you as the market is not very deep for non "official" posters. You could search on some other vintage posters and find the bigger poster dealers and contact them. (Michelino might have some tips on the best string.)
Your best bet is to do the ebay route and dribble them out over time. That way you can keep your price up. You could post them as a lot with a reserve that would make you happy and see how that went, or maybe have one of those E-bay auction businesses do that for you if you don't have the patience (they will want a sizable percentage.) Swag has a gallery link on his page that deals in NO collectibles. http://www.enochsframing.com/index.html (http://www.enochsframing.com/index.html) They may be worth contacting.

Thanks for the advice - I'm really in no big hurry to sell them, but it would be nice to let them all go at once. I'm going to put them all on eBay this weekend and see what happens.

Ryan:
You know when the Larry Regan WSMB shows were at their best? In the very earliest days When Larry didn't have a tape delay, and he "repeated" all the callers from the phone into the station mic with his own voice. Subtle changes in tone and attitude when going from one caller to the next. Always good natured, enjoying the off-center rambling. Somewhere, if they haven't turned to dust, I have tapes of some of those shows.

I talked with him Friday and he told me he had them sold to a collector in Florida. At $6,000, they were out of my price range. It must be something within that collection that is worth a lot of money. I sure wanted those

No clue either but I bet he knew something the rest of us didn't. I was going to offer up to $1,000 for the collection. Oh well, maybe better luck next time. Maybe I should start doing the ebay thing.

Just in time for the New Year, ebay currently has a number of Fest related items including a group of 89-90 cachets featuring Fess and Jellyroll Morton, a 98 Dr. John remarque and the beautiful 2003 Congo Square Pajaud of the Eureka Brass Band s/n.

Where in the world can children hear jazz, gospel, blues, and Cajun music? Where can they eat foods like shrimp po' boys and strawberry snowballs? Where can they buy handmade crafts and see performances of all kinds by people of all ages? They can do all of this and more only at Jazz Fest in New Orleans! D.J. reluctantly agrees to go to his first Jazz Fest with his mother and her godmother, Nanan. Looking cool in his favorite baseball cap and new sunglasses, D.J. first notices the large crowd of people and the huge tents everywhere that hold the stages for the performers. At the Children's Tent, girls perform an Oriental dance and a boy D.J.'s size breaks boards with his foot! D.J. meets his cousin, Jonathan, in the Children's Tent, and they go on to have a great day filled with food, music, and crafts. As D.J. would say himself, "It sure was a great Jazz Fest weekend!"

Don't mean to just jump in here but I am looking for 1999 and 2001. I was in Nola this past weekend and found a 2001 with a crease in it and the guy wanted $1000 bucks!!! OUTRAGEOUS!!! I told him no way and he said I had a problem. That the listings on Art4Now are grossly undervalued and that on the streets they go for his prices. Art4Now lists the poster at $375 and he wanted $1000 with a crease in it! Anyways,
Those are the only two I need from the years I have been.
Anyone have any help on this?

We met the author at Fest several years ago at one of the Fests we did with the whole family, including my two oldest daughters (youngest wasn't born then). She did a reading at the Kids' Tent and then signed copies of her book afterwards, and we went to the reading and then bought the signed copy. She was nice and the kids enjoyed the story and meeting her. It was interesting to them because they had been to Fest, and we've read it again with them a few times since. I recall that I didn't think it read really well as a kid's book, but it was a nice souvenir. Now that you've reminded me of it, I think I'll look for it in their bookshelf tonight and break it out again to see what they think of it now, as it's been a few years since the last time we've read it.
There are several books in the DJ series. As DJ has grown up, the plots follow. I think the latest was DJ & the Debutante Ball, or something like that.

Ebay. Set up a search to email you when a matching item comes up, and wait. There are no '99 or '01 listed now, but they come up pretty frequently. I think the ebay sales prices tend to be a bit below the art4now listed prices, so if you're patient, you should find it at a fair price.
Also, not sure which shop you were in, but prices vary. I've found some of the fairest prices at the Jax Art Gallery on the 2nd floor of the brewery building. They don't have a website, but since you know exactly what you want, maybe call them, see if they have inventory, and ask for a price quote.

Totally agree with both points. I've had pretty good luck on eBay being patient and waiting for a price I'm willing to pay, and I've seen posters I've bought sell for twice as much as I've paid or more within days of my purchase. Timing is everything on eBay.
As for the galleries, in my experience the highest prices I've ever seen are in FQ galleries. The further you can go from the FQ the better, because the FQ galleries count on the sheer volume of the tourist traffic, knowing that they'll find a willing buyer at some point. My first Fest was '95 and I bought my first Fest poster, the Satchmo Blue Dog, that year during Fest. I was a second weekender and the posters were long gone by the time I got there, and the FQ galleries were already asking several times the original price. I called around and found a gallery out near Tulane that sold me one for around $20 more than the original price and I jumped on it. Little did I know at the time that it would end up being the most valuable one in Fest history (and also several times more expensive to frame properly than what it cost to purchase...).

Just scored the Second Lining Crawfish Beer Promo poster, '83 I think for $20 on e-bay! Was half heartedly checking the other bidders and they all stopped $.50 short of me! Whoo-Hoo, maybe next year's raffle?
Anyway, lots of pricey first day covers (cachets) listed on there if anyone is looking to complete a set, (or start one,) and some of the older interesting posters including an '89 Fats and some signed remarques!

There are collectors of those, and some show up here from time to time, buying or selling. They also pop up from time to time on eBay, but they sell for just a fraction of what actual fest posters sell for.
Show us what ya got, someone may make ya an offer...
I was going through some things that have been tucked away since before Katrina & found several promo posters. I have 1979,81 & 82 Schlitz, 2 1982 Kool Jazz Fest promos & a couple of other things. I can email pictures if anyone is interested. Also does anyone know anything about a poster that says Jazz New Orleans with dancing saxophones on it? It's signed by Cris Chapman (I believe).
