Hi Chitown threadheads. So looking forward to this show. I'm opting for the front of the lawn. Up there, you can see the stage really well, while still enjoying the relaxation of the lawn. This is such a beautiful venue. That is, assuming the rain stops before the place floods!

Looking forward to a review of the new NOSC...it is almost now Dumpsta with Henry Butler and Leo as I believe Tony Hall will be sitting in Porters spot on bass.
Interested to see if Tony brings a little different flavor to the mix?

I would love to finally meet some of the Chicago Threadheads. I can bring along my jazz fest flag to fly so that we can all meet up. I probrably wont get there much before show time so if you see the flag come by and say Hi and we can move on over by you if there is room. It will probably be my wife and I unless we recruit some friends.
Just in case there is more that one jazz fest flag I will also be flying a smaller triangular flag with the same traditional 2nd line logo.
Just yell out "hey Mike and Therese! If ya see us.

Hey greg, yea that's one of the cool things about this venue- the lawn is kind of raised above the pavilion area, so in the front area of the lawn you can see. Great, in fact. I'll be there.

How are they going to fit all this in to the 6:30 - 8:30m time slot. I know they may go a little long but the city usually shuts things down by 9:00. If it is anything like Grant park.
How is the situation with bringing in coolers and refreshments? It has not been an issue in Grant Park for a few years but there was a time when the cops were pretty strict.

This from the Millennium Park website:
Q: Is alcohol permitted in the park?
A: Alcohol is allowed in designated areas in the park - the Jay Pritzker Pavilion during public performances and the McCormick Tribune Plaza. Glass bottles and cans are not permitted on the Great Lawn.
I'll have a cooler so we'll see what they say, if you park in the Millennium garage it's a very short walk to the park.

I contacted Millenium Park personally, regarding Alcohol. They responded that it is permitted, but put it in a plastic cup (even if it is a can of beer). Wine bottles are permitted, but again drink out of plastic cups ("will be strictly enforced"). They also told me that no type of tables (not even roll up type) or anything other than lawn chairs, bag chairs, picnic baskets, or blankets will be allowed. From the sound of it you may get hassled if you have a large cooler. I would advise a soft cooler (jazzfest style) to be safe.
Hope this helps. I also wouldnt be surprised if they close the lawn if this rain doesn't stop (they have done it before).

Things were pretty ugly down on the southside last night too, lots of downed trees and flooded roads thought we might blow away at one point. So far I plan on being out there tonight and tomorrow looks dry so we'll be at Riverview fest for Ivan.

Basement flooded, yard flooded, garage flooded, big tree branch on the car, which I had to park on the street cuz of the garage flood. Through it all, I still think about Katrina and how this is nuthin.
Latest report I saw said 50% chance of rain tonite, so I believe it's over for awhile! Even if it rains it'll be great tonite. And the park says the show goes on, rain or shine. I'll have a yellow threadhead krewe flag, probably across the back of my chair.

John Boutte: So ya'll had a storm here the other day? Your power's out, your yards flooded, you got some trees down?
Crowd: Oh yea.
John: Well, imagine all that times a thousand. You were all able to go back in your homes, right? YEA. Two years later, I'm still not back in my home.
Then he sings WHY..... "...I don't think you know how I feel."

Fantastic show! Weather was great! It was an awesome night afet spending the day getting tree limbs off of the roof and out of the yard. The heavy work was done on Saturday by some guys from Kansas City. Had a tree removed that had split in half down to the base and a dangling limb over a foot thick hanging over our back patio (and power lines).
Met Glinda and Mr. Steve (who I hope forgives my blowing him off initially). My first meeting with any Threadheads in person!
About the show:
Didn't mind Koko Taylor as much as wasting over a half hour on that opening Geekestra. OK, we know you miss your college days in a marching band but it's time to move on and play some serious (fun) music. Dressing goofy and having middle aged cheerleaders does not music make. The opener was just further proof of how desparate we should be to save New Orleans.
New Orleans Social Club seemed to get eaten up by the big stage built for a full symphony. That with the sound problems early made fora bit of a slow start. But, after about ten minutes, things fell into place and the show just kept building momentum as it went on. Hearing John Boutte sing "Why" was a powerful moment I had been looking forward to. Irma Thomas is such a gorgeous singer and finally hearing her live was awesome. Unfortunately, with a lineup stacked like this, she only got two songs. The girls screamed when Hot 8 came on and went to the lawn to dance. By the end of the night, everyone was up iout of their seats and dancing.
Afterwards, we made the obligatory trip to Crown Fountain so the girls could get drenched before heading home.

The Jazz Institute of Chicago Presents "Follow the Second Line"
Evan Christopher, clarinetist
Bob Koester, speaker
Kidd Jordan, speaker
Kevin Poorman, speaker
The movie is the story of a brotherly traditional-jazz duo, which—displaced from their New Orleans homes after Hurricane Katrina—accepted temporary sanctuary at a French foreign-artist residency in Paris. There, they independently tried to expand the audience for their New Orleans-style music, the century-old art form that was the first to give The States a cultural identity of its own. The movie was shot last year in Paris and Marciac, the idyllic French town of the 30-year-old namesake jazz festival closely linked to New Orleans culture. The filmmaker also documented their story in New Orleans during the musicians’ first homecoming for the city’s annual spring festivals.
Chicago student musicians are uniquely poised to champion the future of traditional jazz given the city’s century-old relationship with New Orleans music, and the growing opportunities for performing this classic music in orchestral concert venues like Symphony Center.
You may reserve up to four FREE tickets by registering online at followthesecondline.com. Tickets will be confirmed by email for retrieval with student identification on the morning of the event beginning at 8am at Buntrock Hall. Unclaimed tickets will be given to others after 8:30am.

Dish Network has a High Definition Channel that they play concerts on all the time. We just watched the Warren Haynes Christmas Ball thing that raises money for Habitat, and this past year the Social Club played and by most accounts stole the show. They sounded awesome!! Branford Marsalis, Warren, and Taylor Hicks (not as bad as I expected) all sat in with them. Check it out if you get Dish.

Sunday, September 9 (BENEFIT) Roadhouse Jam for New Orleans - Relief for Lower 9th Ward Deslondes Street, 3-9pm, $30 suggested donation.
Roadhouse Jam for New OrleansThis community festival is in the spirit of people helping people during an afternoon filled with live music, New Orleans cuisine, raffles, etc. We are pulling together musicians from New Orleans and Chicago to inspire and open hearts. These generous artists include: Walt Cunningham and One Accord/Dartmouth College Gospel Choir, a multi-cultural choir singing traditional black gospel music infused with R & B pop/rock, & jazz; Lauren Frost, fresh & retro with a voice chosen by Barbra Streisand to portray herself as a young woman; Nicholas Barron, a Chicago favorite one-man acoustic soul explosion; and Grayson Capps, a New Orleans artist delivering Delta blues-inspired southern rock. Proceeds from this benefit will go to the residents of the Lower 9th Ward along with Common Ground Relief and it's Lower 9th Ward rebuilding team.

No Depression said: “Capps plays rusted-out, countrified swamp-blues, whittled down to the dirt floor. His weathered drawl recalls Delbert McClinton, while his subject matter channels Tom Waits.”
