I learned in another forum of the passing of Max Roach. Without Jazzfest I would not have had the opportunity to see nor would I have availed myself of the opportunity to see this phenomenal musician.

My wife went to Jazz Fest with a bunch of girlfriends (newbies who didn't really get it) just couple of months after we started dating. When she came home, she showed me a list of performers from the days they were there. When I saw Max Roach's name, I immediately went into a rant about how lucky she was to see Max Roach. Unfortunately, she said she didn't see him as the group she was with just wanted to camp out at the big stage (now Acura). Besides, she wasn't really familiar with Roach beyond recognizing the name. She said next time, she wanted to go with me so she wouldn't miss anything good. a year later we got married and ten years later, after two kids, we finally made our first trip. We never did get to see Max Roach, but I was one Newbie who found heaven. Although, I was well versed on the music scene well before going so I was primed for the experience. However, in some way, Max Roach was responsible for starting that journey which took 11 years to complete; my first Jazz Fest in 2005.

Rest in Peace

Jazz, my favorite art form of them all. God Bless one of the Masters, Max Roach.

Jazz is a very democratic musical form. It comes out of a communal experience. We take our respective instruments and collectively create a thing of beauty.

Art is a powerful weapon that society, or the powers that be, use to control or direct the way people think. Culture is used to perpetuate the status quo of a society. Even though I'm involved in music for the sake of entertainment, I always hope to offer some kind of enlightenment.

Yet another reminder of the importance of Jazz education and supporting the next generation of musicians. Let all young musicians know that Jazz was the original Cool Music!!
