But let me add this. It is close enough to downtown that lodging is not a problem. There is a Ramada at 57th and Lake Shore Drive and the Hyatt at McCormick Place. I personally wouldnt be too concerned during the day, but if you from out of town and it is night it can bereal sketchy in spots. Generally, if you stick to the east side of the park, you will be fine. Interesting to note...This is where they want to build the stadium for the 2016 Olympics.

Bro... There AINT no where to stay within walking distance. Chicago is blessed with good public transportation and cabs aren't too outrageous. I will sniff around and see if there are any B&B's available in Hyde Park, which is close and a pretty decent neighborhood. I will get some insight from my buddy who works at a firehouse just west of the park. The southside just dosent have many lodging choices. I have to work that Saturday, so no Big Chief for me.

Just to the east of the south end of the park (along Midway Plaisance) is University of Chicago. Be careful walking in that area or you might run into a Nobel Prize winner who will rob you of any protectionist economic policies you may be holding. If somebody were to inquire about your affiliations, just say your a devotee of Milton Friedman and you won't find any trouble.
Me, I'd stay at the aforementioned Radison at LSD and 57th. About a good 1 1/2 - 2 mile walk. I know the South Side is undergoing a transformation but it can be block by block so I'd stick to the advice a friend once gave me, "Do not walk south of 60th, I wouldn't even go there". Note, he is black and lives nearby in Bronzeville (35th and MLK). Also, do not walk west of the park. The area from the expressway east to Hyde Park is real dicey.
A few other tips for out of towners:
Do not put ketchup on your hot dog
Do not park, even where it does not say "do not park".
and
Enjoy a nice cold Bud, courtesy of Jesse Jackson

Hey papa! Tho I'll be out of town till late Friday nite, I plan to experience both the jazz fest & the African fest that weekend. Washington park is a pretty setting, & the DuSable museum of African American history is there in the park. But there's no place like Grant park with the skyline & lakefront adding sparkle to the jazz. Let us know if you plan to visit, we'll plan a THead meet up. Agree with what others have said about the area near Wash park.

In what could not have been a better match, the Chicago Trolley Company is partnering with the Jazz Institute to present our 21st Annual Jazz Club Tour. Already the city’s premier sight seeing tour guides, the Chicago Trolley Company will add both charm and class to one of jazz fans’ favorite events of the season.
The Jazz Institute’s 21st Jazz Club Tour on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 from 6:00 p.m. – 12:00 midnight is an annual kick off for the Chicago Jazz Festival sponsored with the Mayor’s Office of Special Events. Visitors and hometown folks are provided an opportunity to sample a wide range of music and venues to whet their palates for the free feast to come.
The Jazz Club Tour is unique in offering a broad range of musical experience. The Tour provides a deeper jazz experience by going a step further: transporting people to neighborhoods where the music is being (and has been) created.
New to the Club Tour this year are three downtown venues: Chicago Cultural Center, Close Up 2 Smooth Jazz, and the M Lounge and one South Side venue: Red Peppers Masquerade Lounge.
For the low price of $30, patrons can purchase a Jazz Club Tour button which will provide access to all 15 participating clubs and trolley transportation between the clubs. Buttons can be purchased on the day of the tour at any of the participating clubs. Advance Button sales are also available for only $25 at any of the following clubs from August 1- 28, 2007.

Hey Brushes, The Jazz club tour is very cool. I have done it several times and it is well worth it. It is spread out throughout the city so you have to plan accordingly. Start early, stay late. You will never be able to hit all of the clubs but you can have fun trying.
