so there's still a good chance that I moving to NOLA for AmeriCorps, but due to financial issues with the nonprofit I've been assigned to, I'm not entirely sure when I'd be moving. More than likely before October.
So I am writing out of my own curiosity really, what are the fall and winters like in NOLA? Does it rain a lot? Is it dry? Are there any warm, sunny days?
Would I need my Detroit parka?
thanks!!!

Hey Now, we have weather just like New Orleans sometimes in August, too! Winter is small price to pay for springs and falls in Michigan. We don't get it right, everytime, but when we do, it is very, very right!

I've been thinking about you E-lady and wondering what became of your move. I absolutely love fall and winter here. There are a few really cold/freezing days but nothing by your standards. October is my favorite cause it's just comfortable no matter what. Our falls and winters are not very wet that I recall. Our cold snaps come and go quickly and you'd definitely survive without your parka. When it's nasty, we typically layer here because it just doesn't make much sense to have an enormous coat to wear five times a year.
Please keep us posted on your status and let me know if I can help. My email is nola_wren at yahoo dot com.

Well . . . it looks like I too might not be getting there until later than I originally wanted myself - as I was just informed that the people I had interviewed with chose the other candidate. :( :(

Oh, I will keep trying (I'm scanning the online job sites right now - get right back on the horse, you know) - but I'm bummed as it seemed really perfect, and as I have ZERO income right now . . . I don't have months to land another gig.
Sigh.

Thanks for the kind words, Cin - I really hope so. :o
P.S. - You and Jon coming up this weekend for Porter, Batiste and Stolz/Trombone Shorty at Squaw Valley?? I'm definitely going to cheer myself up there on Sunday! :)
So sorry to hear that, Lisa. Keep trying; there is a serious need for talented, dedicated people in this city, especially ones who actually want to live here. Sometimes it just takes a while to find the right fit...let me know if there is anything I can do from here.

That's the way I look at it. I have great confidence that you will find the right thing. It may not be the first job you take, but you'll find it. Don't forget; it's cheaper to be underemployed in the South than in California.

Thanks for all of the love, support and consoling words, y'all!!! It means a great deal! :) I am a bit downcast, and riding the monthly train to Hormonetown doesn't help. But, I'm sending out my resume and creating the future, instead of getting stuck in the past (getting better, not bitter).
In any case - you're all correct, this one wasn't meant to be and the right one will come along. Not to mention that this does NOT derail my plans one iota - I just can pick a time in September to do the drive (with my good friend, Carmen - y'all will love her) instead of rushing it for this job.
So I'm very grateful for that, as well as the wonderful opportunity to come back for Satchmofest and to spend time with the Threadhead Nation fambly!! :D
I'll DEFINITELY be in da bar later though, dinking my disappointment away and hope to see some of you lovlies there! ;)

We were actually talking about that today...lots of fun music in Tahoe this weekend...along with PBS & T. Shorty at Squaw Valley on Sunday, Hot Buttered Rum is playing at the Truckee Ampitheater on Sat. But, it looks like Jon is going to be working on Sat night in SF (bartending) so we'll be staying in town this weekend. :(

ZydeK, sorry to hear this one got away.:(
I'm not searching for a job at this time, but I received an email from someone at another Louisiana festival who is looking for a Marketing Coordinator. The location is Lafayette, though, so I don't know if you'd be interested. The deadline for application is 8/27/07.
If you want the whole megillah,< blahblahblah, etc., > I will forward the info to you.
Best wishes to you!:)

I greatly appreciate the job tip, however I think I'll exhaust the N.O. area proper before expanding my search out that far at this point in time . . . it does sound like a great job though (working for a festival - how cool would that be)! :) :)

PBS talk, I'm dyin' ova here...
And zkitty, chin up and hang in there. Bon Chance.
There's something about New Orleans in the autumn. The sky seems clearer, the mornings and evenings begin to get cool and crisp. Shadows grow longer.
My first weekend as an adult was on a Halloween, it was magical, spiritual and too much fun. I was hooked.
As for the winter weather, well, it's weather, for sho. But I've lived in worse places, fo sho...

Ipsilati carborundum, ZDK. This market is in need of talented, dedicated people and there are more employment opps here right now than there has been in all the years I've been here. If you want some assistance, just e me with some background info and interests or call me. If you don't have my contact info, ask Jenn for it.
As far as the weather here is concerned, once fest is over my sights are set on the first cool front in the fall, which can occur anywhere from mid-Sept to Nov. That first blast of cool causes the city to arise en masse from its heat-induced coma that it is in by September. Southerners are not laid-back because they are dumb, they are just trying to survive and five months of swamp heat will cause you to lay back, I garontee. October is the driest month of the year, and is often very pleasant, but sometimes still very hot. October is the beginning of the best part of the year in N.O. and lasts until the heat gets to the point that you have to live around it, which is usually in June.
The winters here are like a rollercoaster. We have days in the 70s and some 80s and even use the AC and then a front will come from the north and knock the temp down thirty degrees with a stiff north wind and the effect is dramatic. Usually the cold hangs on for a couple of days, but it is unusual to have reinforcing cold air for a prolonged period. In the 27 years I have been here, we have had several winters pass without ever hitting freezing. Conversely, when we do have a hard freeze (28 or below for four hours), we have a problem with exposed water pipes freezing and breaking. People are told to wrap their pipes and to run a thin line of water through the night. In '83 we got down to 14 one night and so many people broke their pipes that there was no water pressure in Jefferson Parish for two days.
My favorite month for weather here is March, as it is warming up, the spring flowers are in bloom, the St. Pats parades are rolling and I am spending all of my spare time looking for shows to grid, or on this bored, getting ready to fest.:)

The Windowman does have a way with words. I second everything he had to say about the job climate and the real climate too.

LOL, Wynn!!! That is one of my fave "Latin" mottos too and a good one to remember in this job hunt.
I've been spending the past day (after working through the disappointment - hey, it's THEIR loss!) sending out my resume to various online NOLA job postings . . . Tulane seems to have quite a few and a long, multi-layered application process, but maybe it will pay off!
I'm pretty confident (although admittedly somewhat less than previously) that someone in New Orleans will want my skill set and experience.
Thanks SO much for your kind offer of help - if you do have any specific tips, hints, leads - you are very welcome to e-mail me at red_beansandrice at yahoo.com!! :D
Also, thank you for the lovely posting, support and description of the weather cycle in NOLA! :)
