View Full Version : Bouchez Update

Re: the John Boutte album (to be produced by Paul Sanchez):
I’ve been getting a lot of inquiries and questions (and good ones) from about 10 people or so. Bouchez does not want to enter into separate contracts with all the “investors,” which is completely understandable. Nor do I want to enter into separate “sub-agreements” with all who might choose to get involved. So....the only feasible path I’ve come up with so far (and I need to finalize this, this week) is for me to pony up the 12K with Bouchez, and I will sign the contract with them. If anyone is still interested in getting involved, it will have to be a handshake deal with me. Given the number of people who have expressed interest, I’m thinking there could be 12 “shares” each worth 1K. I supposed there could also be a half share investment. I think I’m going to ask John’s manager to list the credit on the album as “The Threadheads” or something like that. I don’t need or want any personal glory out of this.
At any rate, this isn’t an investment that’s going to make a lot of money, if any money at all. My feeling is that: a) I might make my $$ back, with at most 10 percent return; 2) I might not make my money back, or at least all of it; and 3) if I don’t make my $$ back....I will be disappointed, but know that it went for a good “cause.”
I know that from the inquiries I’ve received from those who are or might be interested...many good questions; some care more about making money than others; some want involvement in the recording process; some want a very detailed accounting of the $$ and where it goes; etc. etc. This is going to be a passive investment; we won’t have any say in how they record, what they record, where they record, etc.
I’m open to suggestions/comments/changing my mind about some of this. But I’m quite sure I don’t to enter into some kind of legal partnership with all those who might want to be involved...the potential for something bad to happen is just too high (meaning a legal issue that could come up).
If any of you are still interested (I'm not trying to discourage anyone; I'm just being honest), checks would need to be written and sent this week (sent to me, but made out to them....I'll get the name of who exactly the check gets made out to).
Thanks,
Chris

By the way, I apologize for not responding to some emails about this...I've been in the Sierras for two weeks, one of which with no internet access.

Thanks for the update Chris.
Not a 'get rich quick' scheme, huh? We participated in getting Mem Shannon's recent live CD produced. I'm not a particular fan, although I do like him, it just seemed like a nice thing to do for someone who would perhaps otherwise have trouble getting the cash together. My take on it is that it's probably doubtful I'll get the money back, but if I do that will mean that the CD has sold well which in turn means he has made some money.
I would look on this transaction in the same way... if we get a return that means the CD is a success and I would be really happy for John and Paul.
Thanks again for putting this together.

amazing you guys....I think it's just great and you can't back any more talented musicians than those two. I wish I had the money to invest/donate because I would in a second....you're contributing to the music of New Orleans and bringing it out to the masses. You should be proud!

I know soo many musicians who are in the same boat. It is hard enough to get enough gigs to pay the rent let alone enough to invest in the expense of producing a cd. I also have friends who have helped friends and yes indeed typically all they end up with in return is a box of cd's.That said I too wish I had the resources to help not only Bouchez but so many others....in regard to these two I don't think you could have better odds as far as appeal and talent...Groovy for you Chris....and if we all buy just one :D

Just heard from their manager: checks get made out to "Paul Sanchez Music" (he will be the producer of the album). can those of you who are interested send checks to my work address this week...my address is:
Chris Joseph
11849 Olympic Boulevard, Suite 101
Los Angeles, CA 90064
it doesn't appear from recent emails I've been receiving that we will go over the 12K mark...in fact, aside from my contribution, it looks like other investors (so far) will contribute about 3-5K. If for any reason the number goes over 12K, I will return any $$ immediately to the person (or persons) who have tipped us over the 12K mark. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks in advance.

from Paul S.: "I was at a show last week and another member of your organization presented a check for a thousand dollars to a trumpet playing friend of mine named Shamar Allen, for his work in the community since the storm. You guys are really helping out and not just financially but spiritually and musically. I can't thank you enough and hope you dig the record we will make in September."

That was the wonderful wonderful Willie and his Krewe from Naples, FL. That same weekend WIllie also gave me a check for $1000 for F4K. :)

a thought just occurred to me...maybe we can get some Threadhead PR on the upcoming album, and it could help John/Paul, and also mention all the good stuff the T-Heads are doing...

Just curious, what is your role in all of this? Or more specifically, how is it that you are the one raising funds for the album?

could have been anyone...I was talking to John/Paul's manager at the Patry....he told me what he was looking for....after several conversations and emails, I told him I thought I could raise the $$.

Chris is being his typically, humble, modest self. His determination, vision, and diligence will see this project through with a substantial investment of his time and effort to do so. I applaud him, as I know we all do. Now let's all buy the cd, and for that matter make an effort to really support all of these
great NO musicians in the way we can- buy their cds and tell our friends to, or give them as gifts. It is a win-win for everyone. Thanks.

Barbara, thanks for the kind words...but I really believe that it's the energy of the TH community that is helping push all of these projects. This is an amazing group of people!

Ever since the Army Corps failure, everyone gets NOLA CD's from LMF whether they like it or not. I do try to cater to personal tastes which can be hard with some. Thankfully, Harry Connick is both talented AND appeals to the easy listening crowd like my mom.

An excellent policy that I follow also. I played some Bonerama for my Mom last time I saw her and she liked it, so that's what she's getting this year! Fortunately she likes the traditional jazz too...

Update: most of the 12K was sent yesterday to Paul Sanchez (who is producing John's album and also playing on it). Remaining $$ will be sent next week. Rehearsals start next week, and recording is set to occur sometime in the first two weeks of September. Thanks to all!
