Hi, everyone—
CALL, EMAIL, OR WRITE TO CITY LEADERS THIS WEEK!
This week marks the six-month anniversary of the March to City Hall
that inaugurated the SilenceIsViolence movement. On January 11,
thousands of us walked, and stood, and cried, and let our leaders know
that we expect more from them. Six months later, we are still not
satisfied. We have seen some of our leaders increasing their energies
and dedication to our safety. Yet many of our leaders remain aloof
and ineffective. In the view of this organization, Mayor Ray Nagin
and DA Eddie Jordan have been the most frustratingly quiet in the face
of the violence that persists in our neighborhoods.
Today, SilenceIsViolence is sending a letter to the Mayor, renewing
our request that he speak and lead more forcefully on the issue of
violent crime in New Orleans. We have included this letter below, and
it will appear in the Times-Picayune on Thursday morning. If you
agree with the position voiced in the letter, please consider making a
contribution toward the cost of having it printed in the paper; you
can do this through the donation link at the bottom of our website,
www.silenceisviolence.org (http://www.silenceisviolence.org).
or mail a check to 2700 Chartres St, NOLA
70117.
Today and tomorrow, we ask that all of you also reach out via phone,
email, or letter to any public officials from whom you would like to
hear more on the subject of public safety. Many of you in our own
neighborhood, the Marigny-Bywater, are still grieving the recent
violent death of Chris Roberts and wondering why there has apparently
been so little done on this case. Others of you have inquired about
the Kentucky Street murder case, only to learn that the grandmother of
young victims Damon and Ivan Brooks is being stonewalled by the DA's
office. Whether you have a specific case or concern to address or
just a general remark to offer, please raise your voice today! Let
our leaders know that we still stand together as a city, united in our
demand that they work harder for our safety.

for our regular City Walk this Thursday evening. We will depart Rue
de la Course (3121 Magazine St.) at 7pm and walk through Uptown; the
complete route is at www.silenceisviolence.org (http://www.silenceisviolence.org).
Keep our voices strong!

LETTER TO MAYOR NAGIN:
July 11, 2007
Dear Mayor Nagin,
Six months ago, you stood and listened while the citizens of New
Orleans told you how we felt about the violent crime crisis in our
city. We were gratified when, following the January 11 march and
rally, you announced that violent crime would become your number-one
priority in your job as mayor. We are not satisfied, however, with
the manner in which you have followed up on this announcement. We were
particularly stunned, after six months of near-silence from you on the
subject, to hear your cavalier comments made on July 7th. Pinning some
of the blame for the slow recovery on the high crime rate that you
have refused to address, you added, metaphorically, "At some point in
time, you as citizens of New Orleans have to say, 'Enough is enough,
we've got to get together, and we've got to fire our bullets at the
right targets.'"
The citizens of New Orleans have had enough. And we have said so time
and time again. We continue to lose neighbors, children, parents and
loved ones every day to the crisis in our streets. We have asked you
to respond as the city's leader and role model, and you have given us
silence and apparent indifference.
We are calling on you today to reinvigorate your resolve to deal with
violent crime in your city. As you stood and listened to us on
January 11, we invite you to Speak Up, and we will listen.
Next Tuesday, July 17, at Sound Cafe in the Marigny, we will hold a
special edition of our Youth Music Clinics as a tribute to victims of
violent crime and a renewal of our promise to our young people to
build a safer city. We invite you to join us for this event. We hope
you will share with us on that occasion your perspective on the past
six months, and your vision for a safer future for our youth. The
audience will be full of the young New Orleanians who need your
leadership most of all.
We hope you will join us at 6pm next Tuesday evening. We look forward
to hearing your thoughts and plans as we seek to move, unified in
civic pride and solidarity, toward a safer New Orleans.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin arrived in Washington, D.C., today for a two-day visit with members of Congress.

The mayor also plans to meet with Howard Dean, the head of the Democratic Party's national organization, as well as the chairman of the company running the state's much-maligned Road Home program.

A city spokesman said he did not know what Nagin planned to discuss with Dean, the former Vermont governor who chairs the Democratic National Committee, the principle engine of party politics at the national level.

Nagin recently danced around questions about whether he will run for governor or for the 2nd District congressional seat if it were vacated by U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, a Democrat who is under federal indictment on 16 corruption-related charges.

But he continues to raise money for his war chest, now estimated to exceed $500,000. Last week, he attended a fund-raiser in Kansas City, Mo. Nagin's second terms as mayor ends in 2010.
