Today's Syracuse newspaper published a letter to the editor from Jamie Hazard. Jamie is a Syracuse University student from this area who is spending her summer helping to rebuild NOLA. She is also working to maintain Central New York's awareness of NOLA's ongoing issues. Her letter was headlined, "Katrina Not Over."
Here's the letter: http://www.syracuse.com/articles/opinion/index.ssf?/base/opinion-3/1183798658160600.xml&coll=1
Jamie also maintains a blog describing her NOLA experience. I encourage you to read it. The blog is here: http://jaimehazard.blogspot.com/
I hope that you will join me in giving all of the encouragement and moral support to this young person that you can.
PS: I told her about us, and invited her to join us.

KUDOS Jamie! Good to hear that there are more & more people trying to get involved and bring light to the tragedy in NOLA when so many seem to turn the other cheek. If I could move my family there to be part of the rebuilding process I would. Maybe someday ....
But I will continue, with PRIDE, to fly my NOLA flag and where my NOLA shirts & hats and splatter NOLA bumper stickers on my car and go see NOLA bands when they come to town, sport my Fluer De Lis statue in the front yard ... decorate the inside & outside of my house with Fluer De Lis wrought iron scrolls, buy my jewelry in NOLA, adorn my body with tats from NOLA, donate my cash to NOLA and take my vacations in NOLA and promote my pals to join us. I can only hope that some of it may rub off on others.
Hope Jamie stops in to say hi!

Five yellow school buses, carrying 220 students equipped with 60 barrels of paint, 30 rolls of tape, a giant cooler of drinking water and an endless number of paint brushes, descended on James Weldon Johnson Elementary School on Sunday in an effort to revitalize the Carrollton-area campus, whose classrooms were ravaged by the flooding after Hurricane Katrina.

Here's the response that I got from Jaime:
Hello Dr. Mays,
I appreciate your kind words. I am especially happy that you've found my blog. I've checked out the forum and it definitely looks like something I should join-- when I have the chance (things are obviously crazy right now). Sadly, I have never had the opportunity to attend Jazz Fest. I hate to admit that ugly fact. I've always wanted to go. Maybe this year... Let me know if your groups plans on doing something charitable for NOLA in the future. I would love to get involved. There is still so much that needs to be done.
Best wishes,
Jaime
Her email is jaimehaz AT yahoo DOT com (jaimehaz@yahoo.com), if anyone would like to send her an encouraging word.
