I had read that they would be using biodiesal to fuel some of the operations so they are at least trying. Awareness hopefully will be heightened as well.

It is no doubt a worthy cause, and the venues went to some length to be eco-friendly. BUT, how much non-renewable energy did it take to send Linkin Park to Tokyo (in the middle of a U.S tour), or Lenny Kravitz to Australia (in the middle of a European tour), etc etc etc.
I don't think I'm nit-picking, they need to walk the walk.

Not nit-picking at all, I agree, Bry. I thought that Lenny Kravitz was playing Wembley for this though? I would hope otherwise the travel is kept to a minimum from the current tour plans of the bands involved.

they made an announcement on the south african stage that theyve taken
count of all the energy used to put on the concert, transportation, everything,
and the organizers are reinvesting dollars in energy efficient companies, etc..
equal to the amount of energy used to put on the show in africa.....
pluse just getting the word out worldwide, and its after effects for years to come , prolly equals the energy used..

Supposed to get real humid here in the next few days. I try to use the AC very little but being on the 2nd floor the heat rises and makes my place pretty warm. That is interesting, Bry, about the use of rain forest plants being diminished for the production of fuel. I was hoping French Fry oil would be the wave of the future.

I think we all (Gumbo, MD, OH) have the same weather. OH has it 24 hours before us. Got a nice breeze today. Were also dealing with electric bills that are almost double, due to deregulation. First bills coming out now.
MD is usually humid- tomorrow is supposed to be hot. Doubt i can hold off the wife much longer.

I've heard a lot of conflicting stuff about how much plant material would be needed to replace fossil fuels...I guess we just need to get completely away from the burning of things to create energy.

Earlier today on Bravo's coverage, they showed Ed Bageley Jr. at home being extremely green, which included his electric car. They made a point of saying how it only cost him $1.20 a day to charge it. Well that's great, but at least around here, if we all plugged our cars in to charge every day we'd be spewing soooooo much more coal fired pollution up Boston's way...

Working at the Folk Alliance, I ran into the drummer for the Waifs who was touring the U.S. and Canada as a singer/songwriter. He was a nice guy, and he said they were taking a hiatus and doing their own things for a while. Several wanted to be in other countries, so they just took some time off. Whomever that is willing to stand up, rock stars, politicians, you Papins, me....scientists.....the message has got to get out. As a civilization we have not too many years to fix this or we go the way of the dinosaurs. Yeah, there's a lot of false logic going on...each of us has to sort it out and see what it means to each of our lifestyles...i live in a very dry environment, we import our water from far away.....for me it means not having a grassy lawn....or lots of water using plants...i don't hose down my driveway i sweep it.
Yeah, I get pissed off when i see politicians "touring" areas of devastation...cuz really....that money used for the entourage and travel should be used for red cross or other aid to that community...i was so pissed when bush kept flying down to the Gulf Coast...man....don't shake their hands...produce them some checks!!!
one more thought....about the british article on the waste produced by large events....for me it's false logic..if those 65,000 folks in Wim.ton were at home they'd be creating waste there......it would just be spread out....
each of us has to think green for themselves...a habit like teaching kids to brush their teeth.....(gets off of soapbox...sorry)

izz true....those same folks who went to the shows would be creating
some sorte of waste there.....its getting the word out to the billions of
people, so that they can find small ways to be green in their life...
and it adds up of the course of time....just little things like shutting of
lights, buying recyclable paper towel....riding a bike.....recycling...
using energy efficient bulbs...etc....things that are really no skin
off anyones nose....and even if rock stars or presidents arent perfect
examples, it doesnt give us cause to do the wrong thing.....

I think Live Earth brought awareness of what each & everyone can do to help out with energy conservation & how to be a better person in stopping global warming. But it also brought us new music to enjoy. I saw a band that I had never heard of 'Kenna' . I really enjoyed their set & will check out more of their music. A win win situation.

I cant believe that this event has stirred so much controversy! This event was to educate the public on ways to be more conservative with energy. I was at the concert and I did'nt see or hear advertisers promoting their products or asking for money!
This concert was about getting the word out!
Why people have to put a spin on conserving energy, and polluting less is beyond absurd!! I read that people were criticizing Gore for "flying" around the world to help run this event??? When we got to the show there was a plane flying around with a banner bashing Gore! sort of like the Shell bashing plane banner at Jazz Fest. Listen to any conservative about global warming and its just a big hoax, and the democrats are using this just to get votes... "although some are".
Believing in global warming or not shouldn't have any relevance on conserving energy or polluting the environment!!!

Bon Jovi got the biggest crowd reaction followed by Dave Matthews, My favs were John Mayer, DMB, Roger Waters, ohh.. actually everyone was great! we had great seats kind of snuck down to some unoccupied ones;) had a nice view of all the presenters also! Cameron Diaz has the most awesome set of legs!LOL :D
roflmao....I must have told my friends (we had a party last night) that my friend is there about 20 times lol...it looked like a great time. I was talking about you Tab... When we caught DMB, Roger Waters and Bon Jovi, I was sooooooo jealous of you :D Glad you had a great time bro!

what did they show on the big screens in between acts? how was the vibe in the crowd

The set changes were unbelievably quick, some times too quick, "beer run!" :D sometimes they showed live footage from the other shows sometimes short commercials using famous people. the stage revolved between sets, it was really cool. The vibe was enthusiastic and polite, never heard any boos or felt any negative energy.:) We took the train/ green shuttle to the show "its was a mess" too many people not enough buses, but amazingly people seemed cool with this! :) The stadium area is a disaster with construction so driving would have been just as bad.

tanks Tab.....all the venues were well run....and the internet feed
was smooth.......in case you want to see any of the other bands
from the other stages (england, africa, etc.) as of this morning
the live earth website was still showing those shows in their entirety
and some clips are already on youtube.com
i dug roger waters set,...even the police were tight....bonjovis the hometown
fav of course.....
and i was wondering why they didnt consider having it in nawlins...
to show the world what might happen if the environment is
destroyed (louisiana wetlands)......
city park (which had plenty of destruction) could have been
an excellent venue...

I thought that Meyer was good yesterday too Mel. That is the problem I have with him, inconsistency. I have seen him four or five times and it is just about split between good and run of the mill.
It seemed that DMB kind of mailed in their set (ala JF06) I don't think they play well in these festival type of sets...Seen them a bunch otherwise and they cooked. All in my humble opinion of course.

Tabasco, I agree the goal was to get the word out. I also feel that they should, when staging an event regarding this issue, should walk the walk as much as possible. I think they did this. It is everyone's responsibility to fix this so our kids and grandkids don't fry like Turduckens one day. Again, just IMHO.

ey man glad you had a good time....
first of all gore took amtrak from wash. d.c. to jersey.....and if he did
fly around the world to promote it, he prolly took a scheduled commercial
flight, so its just like getting on a bus....he was a commuter...
if your not for helping the environment, then get out of the way...
the train has already left the station....

Amen papafrog. All this backwash about the concert footprint etc...comes mainly from hummer lovers. One of the article quoted above makes the usual polemical nonsense analysis. For instance, it counts as a stroke against the concert the number of times toilets were flushed in Wembly stadium yesterday. Like the alternative was having all those people hold it in all day...and then using the bushes back home.

I agree with you about DMB Gumbo, I think it's because they like to make and ride their own vibe...which is beautiful and magical when it's their own show...I think jumping in after Kelly Clarkson or whoever just isn't the same deal ya know? Neither is playing a set a JF....which I loved anyways though :)

There's no doubt we've been poor stewards of the planet, and this has got to change. First. To avoid frustration, realize this will be a marathon-not a sprint. But I gotta tell ya-and I don't say this to piss off anyone. This whole earth concert was-to me-was just another act of symbolism over substance. It was as much a hypocracy as Al Gore's mega polluting zinc mine, people at JF wearing their anti Shell Oil pins, DMB tour bus dumping human waste into the Chicago river and onto a boat load of tourists. cheap seats at a U2 concert going for a hundred bucks & Bono charging a 25k speakers fee rail against American corpotate greed when he spoke for 15mins at the University of Pennsylvania graduation a few years back.

A lot of folks thought she was nuts back then. She was prescient, and was at the front for environment issues all her life. A most gracious and lovely lady.

RIP Mrs. Johnson.

I found some more of her quotes:

Children are apt to live up to what you believe of them.

Every politician should have been born an orphan and remain a bachelor.

No news at 4:30 a.m. is good.

Perhaps no place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library. The only entrance requirement is interest.

The clash of ideas is the sound of freedom.
