I've been hoping that Shorty would play soon here in Mobile, and sure enough he's booked for this event...

but I'll be in New Orleans that weekend for Satchmofest.
No biggie I guess, since I'll see them that Sunday at the Mint, and probably Friday at the Strut... just thought it was an odd coincidence...

All of the excitement about celebrating the King of Kings Birthday is getting me ready! Happy Birthday Pops! The impossible music choices are a lovely koan. I had one of my fave times in New Orleans last year at da Satch Fest. I had big plans last year to get all over town and do dis and dat. Besides a lovely evening at IBJ and HBJ's house meeting some great Threadheads followed by Kermit's at Vaughns I never made it past Decatur and St Philip one way and Dauphine and Esplanade the other way. There was just to much fun to be had at the Fest and Frenchmen. The Strut was incredible, up 'til 4 a.m. with the Soul Rebels Saturday night after their set at Fest which had everyone singing along and bawling with joy. More Rebels, Glenn David Andrews, and Corey Henry at dba Sunday night. Bob French on a Monday night at Ray's Room with the Jammin and Banzai families. Dragon Smoke does sound good though :).

this suggests that you don't put anything in it, the waitress does which could be problematic. We'll just have it check it ourselves.
Hookah Cafe is one of my favorite spots to hang out. Their hookah menu is very extensive full of different flavors, brands, and combination mixes. It's a great place to go to have a few drinks, smoke, and snack on some tapas. The ambiance is very trendy, yet also very chill and relaxing. Drinks are a bit pricey, but that doesn't really detract me from thoroughly enjoying myself and having a great time. It's the kind of place where you can be comfortable going to either as a couple or with a bigger group since the seating layout includes a bunch of couches and coffee tables. It's almost like smoking a hookah at home except you have the waiter doing all the dirty work!
dirty work? HA! That's my favorite part! :)

There are many wonderful things about New Orleans, and her native music, jazz, is one of the best. Here we celebrate life and death with jazz. Whether it's a jazz brunch on Sunday, a jazz band in a street parade, or a jazz funeral on Friday, there's always jazz to be heard in New Orleans. No trip to New Orleans would be complete without a visit to one of the great jazz clubs around town. Here are some of my favorites.
1. Preservation Hall
Preservation Hall, located at 726 St. Peter St. in New Orleans' French Quarter, is probably the most well known of all the jazz clubs in the city. Here you can hear the traditional acoustic New Orleans jazz. Everything you are familiar with, like the second lines of Mardi Gras and the dirges of the jazz funerals are staples. One thing to know about Preservation Hall, there is no food nor drink. Just pure New Orleans jazz at its best.

2. Fritzel's
Fritzel's, located at 733 Bourbon Street, has the atmosphere of a neighborhood pub and is often frequented by local musicians. Here you can dance the second line to the jazz clarinet skillfully played by Ryan Burrage on weekends.
3. French Quarter Bar
This classy bar at the Ritz-Carlton on Canal Street is a great place to people watch since there are often reports of movie star sightings. Lately I've heard John Cusack, Britney Spears, Kate Hudson and Dustin Hoffman have been seen here. So, if you don't mind paying about $15.00 for a glass of wine, enjoy the elegant surroundings of the French Quarter Bar. And the music is pretty good too! Jeremy Davenport sings and plays the trumpet in great style.
4. Ray's over the River
Ray's Over the River is not only a great place to hear jazz, it's also a very romantic place. It's on the 31st floor of the World Trade Center (Yes New Orleans has one too.) Ray's offers fabulous views of the Mississippi River and city through it's glass walls. Irvin Mayfield, who has been officially designated a cultural ambassador for the city of New Orleans was brought in as a consulting partner. Gregory Davis of Dirty Dozen Brass Band fame, plays the trumpet in this upscale jazz joint.
5. Colbalt
Colbalt Restaurant & Bar in the Hotel Monacon at 333 St. Charles Avenue is in the middle of the Central Business District and is the favorite places for young execs to chill at the end of a work week at a jazz happy hour. On Fridays David Torkanowsky plays both jazz and New Orleans music on his piano. Colbalt is also a great restaurant and offers a good jazz brunch on Sunday.
6. Snug Harbor
At the down-river end of the French Quarter, you will find Fauburg Marigny, and Frenchmen Street in "the Marigny" as the locals call the area, is the place to be for good food and music. The oldest and still the best is Snug Harbor music hall on Frenchmen Street. (626 Frenchmen)Here Nicholas Payton grew up and Alan Toussaint made his jazz debut. The focus at Snug Harbor is modern jazz and it features local talent.
7. Sweet Lorraine's Jazz Club
Sweet Lorraine's is another great place for modern jazz. It's a short taxi ride to 1931 St. Claude Avenue, and it's worth it. Sweet Lorraine's was recently renovated thanks to a fire and is now has a classy art deco feel. Sweet Lorriane's features mostly local talent, but has some great successes in bringing in out-of-town greats like Gato Brbieri and David "Fathead" Newman.
8. Vaughan's
Vaughan's is a bar, pure and simple. It's as down-scale as you can get. But Vaughan's has great music six nights a week. Get there on Thursday to hear Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers. Harry Connick, Jr. and Wynton Marsalis have shown up on Thursdays to sit in with Kermit, who is a New Orleans icon. Expect no frills and drink beer and you'll love it.
9. Donna's Bar & Grill
If you're into no frills, and you liked Vaughan's, try Donna's. Located at the edge of the French Quarter at 800 N. Rampart Street, Donna's hosts the Treme Brass Band on most Fridays, and usually on Monday's you can here Bob Fench, a local jazz drummer and singer.
10. The Jazz Parlon at Storyville
At 125 Bourbon Street, right off Canal, is the Jazz Parlor. On Mondays Tim Laughlin, a traditional jazz clarinetist plays.

I loves me my Kermit at Vaughn's....Timing on Kermit at Vaughn's is always tough...Getting a good spot is tough and easy......Sometimes he grills, sometimes he dosn't.....10:30 is probably a good time to get there.....If you go earlier, like 10, your shot at getting one of the seats near the bar and having a good view is better, presuming there isn't a big neighborhood crowd filling up the seats... but at Vaughns the good views appear and disappear...Like Jazz, Vaughn's on a Thursday night is definitely an improvising affair. Red Beans and Rice and DJ Smokes-A-Lot are the givens :) Speaking of Jazz, another great show that weekend is Saturday night at Snug. The ever cool Maurice Brown slips back into town blowing sweetly on his trumpet. He plays at da Fest too.

LMAO! Yeh if you can get the bar seats and then have someone hug the rail you can get some space working.....then of course if you hang outside instead you maybe get to chat up Kermit (especially if he is grillin') or watch him "prepare" in an automobile and then just follow him up to the "stage" and there you are right in front of the band but standing. Please leave room up front for the trombone.
My Saturday Tips ticket was in the mail today. :)
Me too, but no ticket to the Strut, which I ordered at the same time. I don't know whether to be worried or not. Guess I'll give the mail a couple more chances and then start pestering TicketWeb...

For anyone that has seen Dragon Smoke (Swag?), do they do covers? lindell songs? their own stuff? Galactic? A mix? I'm going to have to show up to find out? :)

yup, been nailed by the trombone before....Dirty Dozen trombonist at the Big Apple to the Big Easy benefit after-party at Madison Square Garden...I think he was doing it on purpose though....kept trying to bounce it off my boobs! lmao! I think they were charging $30 for Dragon Smoke at the Blue Nile during fest. $25 the year before....$12 is just tooooo damn good!
For real, I can't remember the exact songs they played..I just remember these seriously long hard funk jams that went on and on....they took you all over the place....like being on a roller-coaster...it was just beautiful. The show went on for hours and musician after musician got on stage with them (it was during fest) and the jams went on....til 5 a.m. or so. I think it started around 11:00 that night....it was crazy shit and the BEST funk I've ever heard. Reports from San Fran were pretty similar....I don't think Dragon Smoke happens a lot.....maybe a few times a year? That's why it's so special :)

I don't think that little Mobile fest will last very late so hopefully Mr. Andrews can make it back to New Orleans for the show. It's just a bit over two hours back to New Orleans. I'd love to see him up there with Dragon Smoke.
He definitely was a huge addition to the Dumpstaphunk show in May and he always looks like he's having so much fun which is very contagious.

I guess it is too late to order a ticket for the Strut through Ticketmaster. It says to allow 10 days by mail, and I am leaving in one week. For a history of Dragon Smoke go here: http://tinyurl.com/yobdbu
It's a writeup for an August 06 DS show at the boomboom room in San Fran.
IT'S SPELLED VAUGHAN'S Y'ALL AND IT DESERVES EVER LAST ONE OF THE SYLLABLES OF IT'S ILLUSTRIOUS NAME; I like driving down the street with the moon out and passing by streets named "Piety" and then "Desire" and then landing a Vaughan's, just so organic to New Orleans and the neighborhood. They got the place just right.
As far as being hit by a trombone, I would welcome Kermit bring back a trombonist back in the group and I'm hoping this post means he already has done so --maybe corey harris or glen david andrews.

That's what I get for posting just as an Ambien is kicking in:-) And a further correction is even in order -- I said Vaughan's deserves every last one of its "syllables," when I should have said every last one of its "vowels." And on another note, let's hope Kermit brings in a trombone again -- I really miss the interplay between him and Corey, not to mention just the extra dimension the second horn adds to the mix. See y'all at Vaughan's Thurs before the Strut.
P.S. Last time I went to Vaughan's before midnight (pre-K), it seems the show started very close to midnight.
Here's how ithe night shows look so far:

I must have accidently deleted the Gov't Majik show, so I have that one back on now.
Come again on the DBA, etc? Is it correct now?
And let me know what needs to be added and I'll keep it updated. I don't know some of those bars/bands so I didn't include them but certainly will if anyone lets me know what they want on there.

Yea we have been pondering coming down on Friday already. We were trying to keep it on the cheap-side of things but one more night isn't going to break us. All I need is a little push and I think I can convince the significant other that Friday night would be beneficial to both of us. :)

"It sure would be alot of fun, not that much more expensive. I've heard there are jazz bands playing on Frenchmen for free....and on balconies in the quarter..."

Anyone know the story of how it went from satchel-mouth swing to be satchmo?
King Oliver and other early jazz musicians called Louis “Dipper Mouth” or “Satchel Mouth”, presumably because of his large mouth. Early in the thirties, Louis visited England and was given his trademark handle “Satchmo” when British fans heard the “Satchel Mouth” tag incorrectly. Billie Holiday called him “Pops.” Gate was also used to designate Armstrong at some point.
According to Louis' own book “Satchmo, My Life In New Orleans” reprinted by Ace Books in 1957 (originally published 1955), “Dipper...(that was my nickname - short for Dippermouth, from the piece called Dippermouth Blues)”. It would appear that the name was given to him after the tune which he evidently liked when he was very young. -Bruce Barnett

Not yet, it's one of those very delicate things that you can't push to hard for and must strike at exactly the right time! LOL
It's sort of tough as well because we can't leave until we're off work on Friday regardless so that puts us in Nawlins around 10pm or so, and then having to check into a hotel which means close to midnight before we could get out (which I realize is no big deal). If I could get a room at the Frenchmen that night, it would make life much easier. Something about checking into a hotel Friday night, staying up all night and then moving to another hotel is not very appealing.
Otherwise, we may just have to head down bright and early (really early) Saturday morning. I need to call the Frenchmen and actually speak to someone about a room for Friday rather than continually checking the computer.
Not yet, it's one of those very delicate things that you can't push to hard for and must strike at exactly the right time! LOL

That sounds like a multi-colored pasta salad with some pretty, colorful veggies.
Of course mardi gras could mean anything...like they just throw a bunch of stuff in it?????? Either way I'm sure it'll be yummy

I love the B3 too. You should download Jimmy Smith's version of "When the Saints Go Marching In" for some killer B3 stylings. I even had to tear myself away from the Patry in 2005 to attend the Hammond B3 Organ Summit that Joe Krown put together. It was amazing.
And my fave Satchmo Fest food last year were the Spring Rolls at Amy's Vietnamese stand. At one point they ran out of filling and made them with salmon and they were even better like that.

If you get there a little early, you can usually claim a good spot. Even when it's crowded, if you're determined enough, you can somehow squeeze in up front:-)

also if you are doing the trip during the summer-maybe a whale watch or a harbor cruise.

Last year 2006 I went to Satchmo Fest based on the lineup of 2005 which was posted on all the fest boards and WWOZ and had not been updated at all and which featured people I really wanted to see. I didn't find out I had planned my trip based on the wrong schedule until the Saturday of the Fest when I received a program and was wondering what happened to Dr. Michael White and Philip Manuel and others.
