Yes it was!
The headliners (Bela Fleck, Dave Brubeck, Aretha Franklin) all brought their "A" games. I really enjoyed their performances.
If you get a chance to catch Harri Stojka's Tribute To Gipsy Jazz, don't miss it. He is wonderful. He's good enough to be sponsored to the US by the Austrian government and the Vienna Consulate.
I loved Ed Palermo's Big Band Tribute To Frank Zappa so much that I bought every CD that he brought with him.
Howard Johnson and Gravity were awesome. Think Bonerama with tuba's!!! Six tubas and a rhythm section. And, lemme tell ya, they didn't play no polkas.
Mose was Mose, and what more could you ask? He played through a brief rain as though he didn't notice it. He probaby didn't. There were some vinyl covers over the back of some of the chairs. I used them to improvise hats for a friend and I. Before I knew it, everybody in the area had them. There's a pic on PhotoBucket.
Speaking of Pix, they're here: http://s186.photobucket.com/albums/x184/Lester_leaps_in/SYR%20JF%202007/ This is my first time using PhotoBucket. Please lemme know if I screwed it up and the link doesn't work.
See ya.
Nice pics! Post 'em right on here if'n ya want

Notice the coat Aretha is wearing. Syracuse in July is too cold for her. She commented on it several times.

The temps were pretty cool this weekend huh? Far from seasonal...where is she living now?

I dunno where she's living now. I don't think I mentioned that she had her son, Teddy Hendricks, playing lead guitar. He's certainly good enough for the job of playing with Aretha.
BTW, I scored a copy of her Syracuse set list, autographed by Aretha.
I also won the big doorprize of a home/auto set up for XM satelite radio. Woo-Hoo, fer shure.
All in all, it was a very good weekend. http://www.nojazzfest.com/chat/images/icons/icon11.gif

YYR! Futureman, and his brother (Victor Wooten) on bass, make up quite a piece of work.
I dunno if you looked at my pix, but here's one of Futureman:

Howard Johnson is one of the best horn men in NYC and has been around for a looong time. Most of you would know him as being part of the horn section on The Band's Rock Of Ages live album and that was 35 years ago. And Allen Toussaint did the horn arrangements on that album

WOW, and WOW! These two in particular strike my fancy. Any other NE gigs for them that you know of?
(Just read the rest of thread; sounds like Fred and I are on the same wavelength!)

The Ed Palermo Big Band plays the NYC/NJ area a lot. Check here: http://www.palermobigband.com/
Don't know about Howard Johnson and Gravity. BTW, Howard Johnson's daughter Nedra plays tuba in her dad's band, and is a superb blues singer. She really belted out a number for us at SYR JF. She's a Koko Taylor type, with freshness and more energy. She left us breathless, and giving each other "WOW" looks. She has one CD out there. I intend to track it down and get it.

I think I've heard of Eddie Palmero, but gringo that I am, I might be confusing him with Eddie Palmiere (sp?). It's the fact that he does a tribute to Zappa that grabs me!

Consensus around here seems to be that Ed Palermo's Big Band Tribute To Frank Zappa was the best non-Aretha time at the festival.
You can listen to some samples from his latest album here: http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/mediaplayer.asp?ean=045775022529&z=y
I truly hope that you'll get a chance to see his show sometime. He even has Zappa alumni in his band, including Napoleon Murphy Brown - a real piece of work.

We all know that NOLA JF is the best there is, but SYR JF had one big advantage for me over NOLA.
I went the whole festival without seeing even one friggin' LSU chair, sweatshirt, or logo. HOO-RAY!!!

Good pictures Lester....and I hope that Ed Palermo's Band continues to tour...I know that it was this group was so good that it made me miss half of Dr. John' s set last September in Detroit. The "Uncle Meat" stuff continues to blow me away.
