Burger King is donating money to the top vote getters...
Please pass this on to your friends. City Park is in second place in
the voting and I know we can take it over the top. You can vote once
every day until July 13th so it is a short time to help City Park.

This is incredibly important to New Orleans City
Park so listen up. Second only to New York 's
Central Park in size, New Orleans City Park has
never received the financial support it needs to
be a first class urban green space. But here is
your chance to help the park receive some much
needed funding. Burger King is willing to donate
money to a New Orleans and Baton Rouge charity,
and though there are some good organizations
nominated but none are more needy and deserving
than the park.

So,
1-click on the link
2-click here to vote for New Orleans
3-enter your date of birth
4-click friends of city park
5-sit back and feel that you've done some good today

http://www.campaignforyourcause.com/

Come on, it can't be any easier and the park
needs your help. Things are so bad that people
are bringing their own lawn mowers to help cut
the parks grass. Storyland and the amusement
park recently reopened, but the golf courses,
the casino, Tad Gormley and many other areas
of the park received extensive damage from
the storm and need help coming back. Here
is a place you can help.

So please help.

Voting is up until July 13th. Add this link to
your favorites and vote each day. PLEASE HELP!!!

Want to do more? Forward this to as many people
as you can.

Nonprofits rally votes online for donation

For someone who is not a politician, Julie Scott of Career Compass of Louisiana has, by her own admission, become quite adept at politicking.

Over the past several weeks, the Prairieville resident has not been bashful about hounding family, friends, clients — anyone who will lend her support in a unique online election.

She’s an active participant in a “viral marketing” campaign in which voters are deciding online which local charities will split $100,000 from Burger King in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

“Everywhere we go, we even talk to strangers about who we are and what we do,” said Scott, whose organization is one of 10 nonprofit finalists squared off in Campaign for Your Cause.

The election has yielded valuable insights into “viral marketing,” the cyber version of word-of-mouth advertising.

Daily appeals for votes spread like wildfire over the Internet — through e-mail “listservs,” over Web site hyperlinks and blogs. Supporters were asked to forward their own appeals to other potential voters.

“We were little surprised at how fast it took off and the velocity,” said Tom Martin, president of Zehnder Communications, which dreamed up the promotion. “At one point, we were getting the equivalent of one vote every 20 seconds, and we didn’t spend a dollar,”

The balloting closes today, and about 500,000 votes have been cast in both cities.

Awaiting word. The Campaign For Your Cause website says 3 pm. But, somebody must know.

See this from the Baton Rouge Business Report about the BR winners:

=============

The Capital Area Animal Welfare Society received $50,000 after it was announced today as the leading vote-getter in the Burger King Campaign for Your Cause. The campaign allowed East Baton Rouge, Ascension and Livingston parishes to choose how much money 10 local charities should get by voting online or sending text messages. There were more than 580,000 votes cast during the campaign, which ran for a month and a half. CAAWS plans on using the money for community outreach, spay/neuter programs and humane education. The Baton Rouge General Foundation received $25,000 for second place, and the Istrouma Council, Boy Scouts of America received $11,000 for third. Seven other finalists received $2,000: Career Compass of Louisiana, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Care Center Foundation, Muscular Dystrophy Association of Baton Rouge, St. George Catholic School, Volunteers of America Greater Baton Rouge, Woman's Hospital Foundation and the YMCA of Greater Baton Rouge.

That's almost comical. I never really thought about it while the voting was going on but giving a private school money with all the current needs in New Orleans? What can do you but laugh about it?

I mean if a private school needs money, all they do is raise tuition. I was reading the rules for the contest, it seems like some organizations/schools should not have been permitted to enter (obviously).

Maybe the school will do something good for the community with the money ..or they may build a new soccer field.

Why work for it if you can get it for free?

Although in their defense, Mt. Carmel did have 8 - 10 feet of water damage, got no state, federal or other public funding to help them get re-opened, and yet still pulled together enough resources and help from parents, teachers and students to re-open months before any nearby public schools. The cynical might say they had to re-open to re-start the flow of tuition funds, but nevertheless they were there accepting students before any public school was.

Being a parent of two high school children in private schools in New Orleans, I can tell you that the well is only so deep. Raising tuition after the storm did happen. We are limited, even more now, to how much more we can give. At first I was a little disappointed that a school got it over the park, but realizing how much damage was done to Mt Carmel, good on them for getting this grant!

My sentiment exactly - a little disappointed at first, but $25K for City Park is probably more than they've gotten in public money - ever. And the schools no doubt got the word out to their supporters, parents, etc. to vote early and often...

Probably not but a huge chunk of change (I think over $660 million) went to the victims of the priests in CA. not too long ago.
