Can we give Brian and his wife Jenn another round of applause for shopping, feeding and making sure that the threadhead camp was stylin with beer, food and fun?? And Tabasco deserves a hearty round of separate applause for bringin' an espresso machine - as well as Linda for that coffee urn and setting it up the night before ;)
There were so many people helping out and having fun it is impossible to name them all here - but it was really amazing for Brian and Jenn to do all of that work for us ahead of time and ask very little in return. super thanks.......
Absolutely deserved thanks! Now where is my Long Trail coozie?????

MWGirl Linda brought the shawl as best as I can recollect! She brought it it in memory of Linza...or should I say because Linza wasn't in attendance (sounds less dramatic for sure).

hey lit
at 1st i thought he was an attorney by the way he wrote, gotta love the net
i found out he sails and he is a dr with a family practice, hehe
i like to make my messages real personal
his message, then my response
drdanbern wrote:
The reason I made the trip from Philly was to see Rosie Ledet. I understand that her cancellation was known by the Crawfish organizers on Friday, yet they made no announcement until just before Rosie was scheduled to perform. If this is true it is unconscionable. They should have posted a sign at the entrance on Sunday morning, and offered an opportunity for refunds if anyone wanted. Of course this would have risked losing money so I guess it was not an option they considered for very long if at all. With so many quality festivals available around the country, it will be very hard for me to return to this one.
Dr Daniel
I am the the organizer. I was hoping to take a few days off, but got a message to look at your post.
What we did is similar to what you do if your in your sailboat and you have to make a quick decission. Rosie was not there and we had to make a decision very quick
You don't have the facts and i would think you would ask me before you post misleading info on my board. You write well and took great care with the words you chose, as you left just enough room in your statement to wiggle out of it in case you had "Understood" wrong.
The fact is chuck called me on the radio around noon and said Rosie is not here yet. Usually if a band is stuck in traffic, they give chuck a call on his cell. We had no idea where she was or why she was missing. I still don't know and i dont really care. All i know is people were disappointed and i have to answer for them. chuck will be calliing her agent to get my deposit back and find out what happened. Chuck said he could make some moves and not have any empty stages. He made it work, that's his job.
There are plenty of great festivals around and you are most welcome to spend your hard earned family medical practice money wherever you want.
No, i did not consider returning money for one missing band. One band does not stop my show.
Michael Arnone
Most excellent answer! I thought the fest was wonderful! I wanted to see Rosie too, but when i heard she wasn't there, I didn't for one second think it had anything to do with the fest organizers....i thought it was on her end

It's so obvious you all had a great time, demonstrated by the fact that so much of the discussion has been about the Thread Head meet ups, and we, too, are completely jealous.
I was curious about the reaction to some of the bands that played, particularly Donna the Buffalo, since I have a hunch it was the first time some of you had a chance to catch them. As for us, Dugan and I couldn't do a whole weekend festival this time, but we did manage to make it to Hunter Mountain Sunday afternoon for the last part of Mountain Jam. And what a last part it was -- Scofield, Medeski Martin and Wood; Levon Helms; and Ratdog.
Sorry we missed you all at Crawfish Fest, though.
No, I didn't bring the shawl. As overstuffed as my bags were, that would have been an unthinkable waste of space.
Katy, if you recall, I returned your Elvis coozie to you the first time you lost it. Now, please give Keb back his Long Trail one - you no longer need the hostage.

i have never been to a festival where everything was so wonderful. i camped with my daughter at the NO site and it was great. a great line up. delicious food, a laid back atmosphere and an uncommonly wonderful staff (they gave us a ride as we struggled to carry the crawfish back to camp, they deliverd ice to our site and on and on) ... thanks!!!!

Hey Stella! Good to hear from ya. Would have been great to have you and Dugan with us at CFF, but glad you at least got to seem some great music too! That conflict sux but if the lineups were exactly the same, I would easily go to CFF for the vibe and people.
As far as Donna goes, personally, I am just so so with them. Seen them before and even have a disc, but did not find them that engaging. They had plenty of fans just not my thing I guess. I had never seen RRE and really enjoyed them.
Hope to catch up with you guys at a show before too long.

Yes...like Chuck really wanted to scramble around like a lunatic in order to cover her. The traffic was mad that day so that is what the rumor was, that she may be stuck in traffic. If this Dr. Dicko was a real fan of Rosie he would know the stories about her selling out so much!
Rosie was NOT the one bringing in the day people anyway...it was mostly RRE!
Was it? Heck, for me it was the Lee Boys (blown away by them), the Bones and Mr. Toussiant.

Finally getting a chance to post a few thoughts on our 4th CFF.
What a great time we had. Somehow, the camera never left my car, but I knew there would be some great shots. Its fun to look at the photos, and fill in a few blanks;) I remember the headlamp and 'hello Cleveland"- forgot about the shawl! Thank you Tuaca!
Its our pleasure to bring the food/booze etc for everyone. The control freak in me rebuffed the many offers to assist- next year, I wont refuse. Not that it not completely enjoyable- save getting woken up Sat am to make breakfast- but its beginning to outgrow me. We had 35 in the commune this year- i would bet next year will eclipse 50. I think we will need a food committee, booze committee, coffee committee, etc for next year. We now know everyones strenths- Michelle cracks the whip, Deb and Blues are early risers, Tabby makes expresso, Dan is available 24/7 if you need to drink with someone but dont let him mix begneits, etc-and we plan to exploit them next year! Thanks for all the kind comments.
Michelle and I have already planned next years meals. Everything will be cooked on one Weber. One night will be seafood night- make your own poboy. Fried shirimp, oysters, fish, etc. Another- Filet cooked on the grill. Simple and good. I think the breakfasts worked pretty well.
What else can be said that hasnt already? The Rads show was just a great time, and everyone would be raving about them if Tab hadnt completely stolen the show(actually I think Ruben did). No one has mentioned Leroy's comment about Tab- "He has never looked at a man like he does at Tab". I actually dont think Tab is human- plays mean guitar, sings great, doesnt sweat, hair never messed up, ladies love him, some men do too- makes me sick. Im sure there is a chink in the armor somewhere.
I will repeat one thing that makes this fest more special than JF- the opportunity to hang out with other THs and their families and actually get to know them. At JF, we all retreat to our rooms, then meet in loud bars. CFF is the complete opposite.
See everyone soon!

Have you ever seen so many happy people? Just looking at all these pictures feels good. I loved watching the kids have so much fun too. Playing with their crawfish, driving the golf cart, shooting that rocket. They had some pretty wild games of Crazy Eights going on in that RV while their parents were partying outside. While we were loading up on booze they were loading up on junk food. They went through a bucket of gummy worms alone. There's no way I'm getting away with NOT renting the RV next year! It made for such a good kids club (and if the kids are happy then mom is happy). (and if momma ain't happy ain't nobody happy)

Many thanks to Michael, Chuck, Melissa and the rest of the team for making the Crawfish fest such a fun and relaxing event. Friday night I could barely finish the mountain of delicious jambalaya from Daddy Arnones giant pot, and the boatload of crawfish was a nice surprise, which we enjoyed while listening to Donna the Buffalo. Jaeger was a nice touch, helped to wash down all that spice. The Radiators were good too.
Camping in Threadhead village was cool. We are used to camping at fests and have our own set up, so we chose not to join in on the food commune. Bryan, it seemed like you had enough work to do! maybe if it was more of a potluck type thing we would be more inclined to participate. We appreciated the campfire though and it was nice to be near everyone, and relatively close to the music too.
Saturday we were expecting a washout but it turned out to be a beautiful day until the severe weather scare right at the end of the Funky Meters. Luckily it didn't last long. Tab's band with Leroy, Ruben and Mitch Woods was definitely the high point of Saturday. There weren't too many people at Leroy's set in the dance hall on Saturday so it was so great to see him and Ruben shine during the night set and also the next day filling in for no-show Rosie. (that happened another time when we took a ferry to Block island to see her, but at least she called that time). We get to see Leroy quite a bit in RI but its usually at a dance where that kind of showmanship is not fully appreciated.
I would have loved to see more musicians in the campgrounds, I will have to encourage more of my jamming buddies from Rhythm and Roots to show up at this fest
Lee Boys were great, and I loved Bonerama on Sunday - I thought they were even better than last year. Railroad Earth sounded OK but I wasn't in the mood for them... I like the New Orleans style music more ... even Donna the Buffalo, who I really like, I could have done without, since we see them at so many other festivals around here. Though I heard their Saturday afternoon set from the camp where I went to take a little snooze (got up way too early that morning) and they sounded really good. I would love to see more brass bands, jazz bands, the kind of stuff we don't get so much of up here... of course that's why I go to New Orleans Jazzfest, which is the ultimate.... but this Crawfish fest to me is sort of like an extension of Jazzfest, in a more relaxed setting. I would have loved to stay for Allen Toussaint but we had to hit the road.
hey Mike, I saw where you said you'd like feedback in a couple weeks by email. Have you considered sending out a survey to all the ticket buyers like they do after Rhythm and Roots and GreyFox?
Great photos everyone, I'm glad you took so many, cause I didn't. But here's a link to mine:
http://good-times.webshots.com/album/563673932qRCtHk
Did anyone happen to get any pics or video of Guitar Shorty? I missed that set but heard it was really something to see.
Thanks again everyone for making it so fun, it was so nice to see everyone again, even if only for a brief time. There were times it felt just like being at jazzfest, looking around and seeing so many smiling familiar faces. and as Lit said in an earlier post, if you liked that, or couldn't make it cause its too close to jazzfest, try RHYTHM AND ROOTS (http://rhythmandroots.com) on Labor Day weekend... this year we'll have Marcia Ball, Keb Mo, The Gourds, Dan Hicks Steve Riley, the Waybacks - and hosted by the Pine leaf boys this year. so much great music, produced by Chuck - the same person responsible for booking the bands at CFF. and Rhythm and roots goes till late at night, with after hours jams all over the camp too. check it out!

Well, to be honest, that was a cupcake she was eating in Abitagirl's photo; but she actually was taking Benedryl because she had a cold. What with the spiking of jello and now pudding though, I suppose I should not have assumed those were "virgin" cupcakes my daughters enjoyed for Danielle's birthday. Whatever they were, my girls sure were happy all weekend long.

I agree with a lot of your comments Lisa. We are also accustomed to having our own set up for these types of things and would probably be more interested in some type of pot luck or community kitchen/dining area where we can all set up our cooking and dining stuff. Probably would only work for some of us though, because the benefit for lots of other folks is obviously not having to pack or plan all that stuff; we kind of like it.
Also agree on more musicians in the campgrounds; the late-night campgrounds jams are something we also enjoy with our friends at R&R.
As for Donna the Buffalo and Railroad Earth, we've also seen Donna the Buffalo quite a bit, but still very much enjoyed seeing them here. My wife had an interesting and similar comment about Railroad Earth though, and I agree with her: she liked them a lot but was not really in the mood for that type of music right after Bonerama. We both agreed that they would have been better following Donna the Buffalo because their musical styles are more complementary.
Totally agree that some New Orleans brass would have been a much welcome addition. Bonerama was awesome and I love seeing them, but they are essentially a brass rock band and don't fill the same niche as Rebirth, NewBirth, Hot 8, Nightcrawlers, Forgotten Souls, Treme or Soul Rebels, any one of which we would have been happy to see.
I think the survey like R&R does would be a good idea for Michael too; and I obviously agree that these folks should check out R&R, because I'm sure they'd like it as well for many of the same reasons--and especially the night shows and extensive kids' activities. Looking forward to seeing you and Joe there.

Lisa I have a bunch of Guitar Shorty pics... As soon as I get them downloaded ill post some. I thought he was awesome! I watched most of his set I have no idea why they had him up against Tab!??? Theres no shortage of foms anywhere!
I made a mad dash to the main stage for a few minutes to see the tab-letts... Then back to shorty...MAN! That guy was good! The crowd tried to get an encore but no luck! There were a lot of unhappy campers because his set ended with 6 minutes left? Ask Scoop! We were pretty pissed! The emcee gave us an earful saying they had to set up for the next band... Oh well!

Hey Tabasco, I've been thinking about how great that Rads set sounded both on Friday night, and when I heard you playing it on Sunday morning. Any chance you are interested in and able to do a b&p (i.e., burn it for me if I send you blanks and postage), or a trade for something from my collection in which you might be interested? Let me know either here or by e-mail when you have a chance. Thanks.

that would be nice, but my mom won't fly and she's getting harder to get away from home (early stages of Alzheimer's and all that) and having all 4 grandparents there is a requirement right now, at least while we still have 'em all... she's our baby, and the one they all really spoiled. I checked the digital soundboard site earlier and the CFF 2008 shows are not up yet. I guess I'd be a bit more apprehensive to shell out $23 to them now that I know there's a good chance that the second disc is blank. Bummer. There must not be too much on that disc in any event, because I recall hearing "Sitting on Top of the World" when you were playing it, and I thought that they played that during the last 1/2 hour of the show (but I was pretty hammered by that time too).
On a brighter note, I noticed that Dr. Downer has posted an apology on the CFF messageboard. Glad we got our message across.

Shorty KILLED!!!! What a #$$%ing set. Balls to the wall Texas roadhouse blues. Yes he did a long slow blues and took a stroll into the crowd. Don't know what caught his eye but he stopped in front of a lucky couple sitting in their chairs and basically played the whole song for them (maybe 10 minutes worth) and we were just lucky bystanders. Wandered back on stage for a big drawn out ending to the slow blues with loud chords that morphed into 'Smoke On The Water'. And then a killer 'Hey Joe'. The less said about no encore and the emcee that Tabasco talked about the better, but damn that set was AMAZING!

LisaTI, i am looking into doing a survey by survey monkey.
I dont want to be too much like chuck's fest, thats why i give him a list of who i want and a budget to work with.
We bounce idea's off of each other.
We will bring a brass band back, maybe some Indians too.
I think i want the rads or similar for 2 sets on friday night, that's the 1st thing on my wishlist
the 4 PM slot was not enjoyed by a lot of people, i think everyone was still setting up and unwinding.
every year when the town sends the event license, they also send me the local sound law that they have. I am not supposed to go past 10 PM with sound, jammin is ok if your neighbors are ok with it.
I dont want the communal feasts to get too big. Local health boards usually frown on potluck dinners, as they can not trace food sources if someone gets sick. All of my food booths are inspected and have passed.
I see dr dan has apparently said he was sorry, it was short and to the point, it is accepted.
I guess i wont be calling his dental practice and making fake appoitments that i will forget to call and cancel.
There is a reason i noticed he wrote like a lawyer, his website says he is avail for court as an expert witness for either side, so he has spent time in a courtroom.
I know his website and his address of his office. He collects coins and pre ww2 baseball cards and loves live music.
He is now old news and we move on to bigger and better things.
She was missing from his website too, hehe
We think we now know what happened.
i have a 5 am wakeup, in god, 4 hours
ever notice i seem to use way to many comma's? lol
RE: Wifi and ATM's.
For months i have been asking for just these 2 items to be procured by the venue. I was always told by the new GM, dont worry about it, it's under control.
I am now talking to a bank for ATM's and a friend for wifi.
I was never 100% sure about it, thats why it was only mentioned here and not on the website for certain.
2009 Dates, May 29, 30 and 31st

Thanks again to the both of you and your family. Glad you are planning to offload some of the work to the rest of us because, you are right, if it gets much bigger, you will spend your entire fest taking care of all us threadheads. I know what you mean about enjoying it, as Marcia and I have catered a few events and when things go smooth and everyone is happy, it's a blast and very rewarding. Everyone enjoyed and appreciated your efforts (plus it was very tasty!)...we all, I have no doubt, will be glad to join up and get our assignments for next time. (Make sure Tabasco is still in charge of espresso. I know what a good demitasse is all about, and Bill's coffee is one of the best I've had outside of Italy) One thing I can promise is that next year, Marcia and I won't let anything sneak up on our schedule as what happened to Friday this year, so we plan to be there to help right from the start.
Tab was indeed a smoking monster Saturday, along with much help from Ruben, Leroy and Mitch Woods. Because of that performance, I kinda, maybe, almost, understand the lickable thing...well just for a moment on that one riff. But I absolutely agree with you on how much fun it is to go back to camp and hang with the Threadheads and their families. Finding out that we have so many friends from all over the continent and beyond, all of whom share our love for New Orleans, its culture and great music in general..is somewhat new to Marcia and myself, but as we found out at French Quarter Fest the past two years, Jazz Fest this year, and now Crawfish Fest, it is quite addicting and we now look forward to these events and meetups as very special occasions.

Hey, Michelino/Marcia
Can you remind me of the recipe for your delicious dink?? I know it had Pear vodka, mint and key limes, but wasnt there some flavored soda or something? That was sooo refreshingly good! Perfect for hot summer Texas days on the lake! Many thanks, my friend!!

Sure...
Crushed a few Fresh Mint leaves in the glass and muddled with a splash of Lime flavored tonic.
(You could use simple syrup if you wanted the drink a little sweeter)
Added Ice, Absolute Pear Vodka and More Lime Tonic to fill,
Shake until it pops
Squeeze in Juice from a seeded Key Lime or two and add lime sections as garnish
I used Polar Brand Lime Tonic but regular Tonic should work as well.

I'm thinking that the relevant statistic is the number of injuries per use by inebriated adults, and guessing that the odds change pretty dramatically with that statistic. Still probably pretty low odds in general though. As but one small sample size, we had one set up at a house on Martha's Vineyard where a crew of us who worked at the same restaurant used to party after hours almost every night during the summer almost 20 years ago. I'm guessing it was used by around 12 "adults" for approximately 60 nights during that summer. During that time, I can only recall two injuries that would qualify as "documented," and neither of them were spinal injuries or paralysis.

Most "adults" don't remember even using the Slip 'N Slide the next day.
A friend of mine was sitting on the deck, drinking copious amounts of alcohol one hot summer evening. She jumped up spontaneously and slid down the S'NS.
Next day she was complaining about her neck. When we told her about her water adventure, she couldn't recall it at all.

My highlights: seeing old TH friends, meeting new TH friends, watching Mdfest arrive with what looked like the contents of a whole Costco in a trailer behind him, Mrs. Mdfest telling me that he isn't as funny at home as he is on the chat board, taking about 3 hours to fill Tangled's air matress with my portable air compressor, the hospitality of Michael and his krewe, Radiators, Tab on Saturday night, Mitch Woods, Tab's harem lining up for his autograph (and licks), The Lee Boys, Prejean's duck pheasant and andouille gumbo, Crawfish Mara, my wife looking at me after how many countless festivals together and telling me that she finally "gets it", my wife becoming part of Tab's harem (maybe that's what she "got"), and Mightyradgumbo, Lit, Tabasco and me discussing the influence of Miles Davis on the Greatful Dead at about 3:15am Sunday morning. We would fit right in at Johnny White's.

I am near chatanooga, i should be in my own bed tommorrow night for the 1st time in almost a month.
I talked to State Shuttle today. I will be putting their number on the website. Anyone who buys a single or 2 day ticket and wants a ride from their hotel will be able to pre-arrange a ride without having to rent the entire bus. Shuttle reserverations will have to be made at least 24 hrs in advance. Kids under 4 will need their own car seat, thats the law. They will have room in the back for chairs.
Penciled in the stage for next year.
Jager and Ketel and Monster people were really happy.

I hear ya Bri. I was saying the same thing. I was never much of a fan, and then all the ladies here drooling over him made me want to dislike him more, but dam, that ain't easy.....THEN he did such a good job making his point about the importance of saving New Orleans. All that I have read and heard since the thing, I had not heard the point that he made, all while staying (mostly) a political....that it doesn't matter what party belong to, if you are an American you should want to see NO rebuilt and supported...that the rest of the non-democratic world wants to see us fail, that they are watching, and that they are using NO as one of the signs that we are failing as a political system.....and he said it nicely, without preaching etc.
I gave up trying to find the chink in the armor there and then!

Still not available on the digitalsoundboard website yet. Looks like the download will be about 1/2 the price of the discs at CFF, so I'll keep checking. I also noticed that the New Orleans Social Club set from last year's CFF looks pretty amazing and I'm thinking about getting that too. I've downloaded a few NOLA late-night shows from them before and have been happy with the quality. Plus, you get the set list, which they did not have with the discs at the fest.

Haven't had internet access since we got back from CFF, so just catching up. It really was as great as has been so enthusiastically reported.
Great job Michael Arnone! Can't wait until next year.

We are going to Warm Springs Va on the 14th of June. Tab is playing along with Eric Lindell, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Taj Mahal and the Trio. That should be a great fest. I am definitely a Tab convert. He is one hottie! Music is damn good too!;)

They don't let you dance at the Rams Head on stage, so it's a waste to go see Tab there.
