Ok, first question:

We're trying to sort out accomodation, we're planning on being in NO from the Tues before 1st weekend til the Tues after 2nd weekend, except for a couple of day in between when we plan to head to Tennessee.

Is it best to stay outside the French Quarter/Downtown area? I assume accomodation out of these areas will be cheaper, which is what we're looking for :D but then is transport a hassle/expensive to the fest but also to night time entertainment?

We stay in the Quarter - it's pretty convenient. I booked in September and got a great deal. We use public transportation to the Fest and cab at night. The shows on Frenchman Street are great and just outside the Quarter. With the length of your stay, you might be able to get a weekly rate.

I'd stay in or close to the quarter for your first trip to New Orleans.....there are some good deals to be had and there are a lot of contacts that people have on this board. Try Neworleansonline.com for apartment rentals for that length of a trip, you may want to do that...this way you have a kitchen...which is GREAT to have for all that food you bring home from fest for dinner :)

Why Tennesee? The days between the 2 weekends are amazing! If you're planning on leaving cuz you think there's downtime, don't do it. That's when a lot of the magic happens....backyard parties put on by musicians, google Chazfest (washboard Chaz) and Ingrid Lucia backyard party. They sell tix and it's open to anyone. The Threadhead Patry also takes place on the Tuesday in between and it's the highlight of the fest for many, many peeps. Check out www.threadheads.org for more info on the Patry.....again open to the peeps on this board (that means you!!) and the public. It sells out within 1/2 an hour though....

Take your time making plans and we can help you choose a rezzie for accommodations so you don't get locked into something not so great. Feel free to email me at lparent8 AT cogeco DOT ca (substitute symbols for AT and DOT) anytime and I can help you out okay? It's never too early to start planning and some have already booked their rezzies for next year...

Some of this depends on what you want to do when you are there. If you don't intend on having a car, it may be as cheap to stay in the FQ or Downtown areas. What you may spend extra per night would be made up on transportation costs if you are going to spend much of your time in the FQ, Marigny, and at the fest. Taxis are easily available to venues and such. If you are going to have a car you have to consider parking costs. I always have a car, but that's because it's cheaper to drive from where I live. The car usually gets in the way. There are a few times it's handy, but it seems I spend more time and money parking it than it's worth.

From an enjoyment standpoint, I would definitely spend the money to stay in or near the FQ. You can get decent deals, and I would check for ideas on swagland on how to book good rates. I stayed across the river for most of the time this year (which was okay), but many people on this board stayed cheaper in the Quarter.

Have fun planning SJade!

I'm with the others on staying in the Quarter for your first (2nd and 3rd) time. If you want to lock your accommodation away early, many places offer a good rate if you book and pay early. We're doing that again this year, especially 'cos the aussie dollar is strong against the US at the moment which takes a bit of the pain away. Same for the kiwi dollar at the moment?

Take Corona's advice and re-think leaving town for a few days... there is never enough time in NOLA and every day you are out of town you'll be missing something special.

As Fest gets closer there will be individual threads dedicated to every possible detail of enjoying the experience... I'd say book the big stuff now (flights and accomm) and then stick around here for the rest. Cheers!

Another suggestion - just about everything has been discussed at some time or another on these forums. Go over to the Jazz Fest Forum and go back through all of those pages. Much of it is silliness, but you'll be able to determine what seems worth reading by the threadnames. You'll see what others did for this year to help with your planning for the next. Looking forward to seeing you in N.O.

Thanks all who pointed to swagland.

At this point, the first thing to get squared away is air travel. That tends to only get pricier as the dates get closer.

Once that's done, then worry about hotels. The best deals are probably anywhere from 6 to 9 months from showing up, so what you want now is to find the best deal in your budget that is refundable and/or cancellable. If you give us an idea of your lodging budget, we may have some specific suggestions. I agree, as a first timer and coming from abroad, it's probably best to plan to stay downtown and to not have a car in New Orleans.

If you do stick with the Tennesee plan (Memphis?), I'd do that up front, the first few nights, before Fest. Then come down to New Orleans and stay.

Good advice. As an example, this year there were $60/night deals (some even lower) at a few 4 star hotels in or close to the Quarter on Hotwire/Priceline. I used Priceline for the first time this year and had a really good result. But as Swag says (he really is the definitive source of all things Jazzfest) book your air as early as your plans allow, then worry about your hotel.

And don't be afraid to ask questions. This is a great group of people who are all here to help.

Isn't there someone that you can call???? BBB? Visitors Bureau? Hotel Assoc? I wouldn't think that a reputable hotel can get away with that!!!

I know jada and cisco contacted the BBB. I talked with the mgr before fest and she assured me my account would be credited because the person who took my cancellation said it would be. Still hasn't happened. She's on my list for next week, after I get back from Vegas, as are the BBB and the visitor's bureau and the hotel association.

Thanks for the advice!

I think we will be needing a suite, for that length of time. Can anyone recommend a hotel that has suites in the FQ? Not sure about price, but we're looking for something under $200/night.

I like the idea of booking (cancellable) accomodation now and keeping an eye out for other specials. With Hotwire, Priceline, etc. what sort of room requests can you make? We'll probably be a party of 4 and I'm a little worried about this double occupancy thing.

funkkjunkie
06-24-2007, 11:29 PM
I've had three hotwire hotels during 3 of my 9 years at jazzfest and we had 3 people in the room. Upon arrival we request 2 beds and it's always been granted. Yes, it's a gamble and swag can tell us if anyone has reported being denied their bed request. And the desk peeps never seem concerned about how many are going to be in the room. At least in my experience. Our best deal was 05 when we got staybridge suites for $57 a night. It was one very large room with a couch and a kitchen area and free full breakfast. But due to much musical fun long into the night, we only made it to breakfast one morning. :)

swag
06-25-2007, 08:00 AM
With PL & HW, bedding (and smoking) preferences are request basis only. Most hotels would accomodate if they have the requested room type available. If the hotel is sold out of that room type, then you'll need to take whatever is left. I'd guess the rate of requests being honored is around 90%, pretty good odds but not certain.

You are unlikely to get a suite via PL/HW, but may be able to get 2 rooms, for less than one suite booked the normal way.

Not sure about suite hotels in the Quarter itself, but try the Downtown/CBD area adjacent. I know the Marriott Residence Inn will offer extended stay rates for a 14 night stay, and others may too. Check Springhill, Staybridge, Embassy Suites also. There are probably others, those are the first ones that come to mind.

getting a suite for under $200 may be tough during jazzfest. We had a one bedroom with full kitchen, living room and then two side beds built into the wall in the living room...that was $250 a night....how many people are you talking? Do you need 2 bedrooms or just one. Alot of the threadheads here book apartments in the quarter as well. Saturn, do you have the website for your places that you've stayed?

This is true but you can get one in Metarie for that price if not much cheaper. The Sun Suites in Metarie had pretty cheap suites and they were clean, no problems to be had.

But like most have said, if it's your first time, you don't want out stay on the outskirts of town (Although, your hotel could be closer to the Festival grounds if staying in Metarie as compared to the Quarter).

I hear ya McGregor but I have to tell you that staying in the quarter is pretty damn special...and a bit pricey during fest Just being able to take a stroll to the store or corner bar or to a boutique is wonderful. I go to New Orleans alot and stay with the Jamn's almost every time (thank you, thank you Jamns!!) but I always spend a week of fest in the quarter or the marigny...it's such a cool experience. For their first trip, I think they should take advantage of all the quarter has to offer. It's so cool :)

I was wondering the same thing ... we stayed on Bourbon this past year & I'll think twice before we do dat again! We stayed at The Royal Sonesta had a balcony and the club below us had some OBNOXIOUS dj that would sing over the music ... UGH! Nuthin' worse than that to me ... a flippin' dj that talks over the music ... and all night long! I could live with the music but it was the DJ that drove me crazay! When the dj finally shut up then the sirens started up! One night I heard the cops chasing someone down the street screaming "Freeze mutha f*cka FREEZE ... I said FREEZE!" I wanted to getup & check it out but was a little scared so I just laid there ... then the horns on the clean up crew started ... whew! Same deal at the Bourbon Orleans for the French Quarter Fest, no complaints at all on the hotel or service and believe me, I'm all for staying up late but the stereo in the bar on the street below was shaking us until the sun came up, no exaggeration. I guess that's to be expected.

The worst part was the repetitive techno bass line for 4 hours, give me some funk at least! :p

I said FREEZE!" I wanted to getup & check it out but was a little scared so I just laid there ... then the horns on the clean up crew started ... whew! So I wanna get a place "off" Bourbon next time so that I can recoop and be ret to jet in da morn. Any recommendations? I just loved the Quarter and want to stay there again.

Made the same mistake a number of years ago, staying at the Royal Sonesta, with room right at the corner on Bourbon. Didn't sleep for 4 nights. Back in the day when the Old Ab was still a rocking bar, (not the damn slurpee bar they turned it into) and the band played until 4 a.m. Never again will I stay on Bourbon!! I need my beauty sleep more than most. LOL.

Isn't there someone that you can call???? BBB? Visitors Bureau? Hotel Assoc? I wouldn't think that a reputable hotel can get away with that!!!

mark, im one of the three, the hotle refused to deal with the better business bureau. when i notified my credit card company they gave me an instant refund. the hotle then gave me one but im going to believe it was because of the complaint to the BBB. they eventually caught up with the double credit and charged me back. i cant tell you how many emails phones calls and even a visit to the hotle during fest, and i got nowhere with them,

Thanks to cisco and jada, who made my road with Hotel Royal easier to follow. I think this hotel has gone under the radar and has not returned many,, many deposits, and most folks just said Oh, well. But not the TH nation! It was in my acct a week after he said it was, but Michael the acct for the Melrose group of hotels, got it done! Yay!

We stayed at the Maison Dupuy two blocks off Bourbon on the corner Toulouse and Burg. Really nice and quiet, Great rooms, nice pool and hot tub, we loved it, off the beaten path but close enough and the taxi stand was right out the front door.

May do it again.

We are staying withing two or three blocks on the park for VooDoo and will probably do the same for Fest. I just want to walk home, recover and be ready for the night shows. We learned a lesson. But of course hubbies ankle has yet to get right. He can hardly walk but he can dance in one spot!!!

Do not even consider stepping foot into this trash pit.

I had a friend that stayed there for the Ala-LSU game last year. We went by there to pick him up and he made us come upstairs and see it. It was horrid. I can't even put into words how bad it was. Most of the rooms had not been touched since the hurricane, mold/trash/old beds laying around, broken windows, torn bedspread (not to mention quite stained), room smelled of old cigs. His room had no lights, the overhead didn't work, the lamps didn't work, you had to open the curtains to in order to see and the people staying there were less than (I must be careful here), well I wouldn't want to meet them in a dark alley. The only reason he stayed is because there was a convention in town and no other (reasonably priced) rooms.

You would think they would at least fix a floor at a time and then open that floor, nope. We walked past 10 disguisting rooms to get to his and it was pretty gross in its own right. You could see into the rooms that hadn't been fixed, roaches, the smell was unreal. He sent them an email demanding his money back and then called the hotel and they never responded. It's a disgrace it's even allowed to be open.

I wouldn't let my worst enemy stay there, the truth and I'm the type of person that only needs a bed with clean sheets and a shower and I'm good to go.

I would nominate it for worst hotel in the world if there was such an award.

I stayed there once in the 80's (a long time ago, I know), but it was horrible! Roaches everywhere, even in the daylight. Staff was not friendly and maid service was slim to none.
This is not in the Quarter or even near, it even though it is named Days Inn French Quarter. It is several blocks above Rampart, right by N. Claiborne....

check TripAdvisor.com- I bet it's ranked a 1 or 2 (out of 5)

I have no doubt you are correct sir. It's almost comical thinking back on that hotel now. I'm really glad I saw it though to be honest because no hotel I will ever stay in will compare and hey, I have that going for me! :)

I will go out of my way to not stay at a Days Inn now because they allow that one to be open.

Some of these reviews mirror mine above
This hotel cannot meet the quality standards of the Days Inn hotel chain. It is dirty, broken down and maybe, dangerous. The hoom I got was designated no smoking but it smelled of smoke. The bathroom window was broken and covered with a thin sheet of plastic, This let the highway noise into the room. The cold water knob did not work in the shower. The elevator was a wreck and I has not been inspected. The neighborhood is a lot rougher looking than last time I was here. I was afraid to walk back to the hotel at night.

This place is a wreck! It should not be open!

ell, when your first view of this hotel comes around you say to yourself...ok, looks normal. When you check in, assuming there's no customer flipping out at the check in clerks, it looks clean enough. Once you have checked in and they have your cash...blamo, the place shifts into a dimension of filth and crappiness. This hotel is in a total state of disrepaire. The interior looks like it's going to fall apart, the elevators are totally dirty, and the rooms are in equal state of disrepair. There was a pool somewhere which I didn't see, but I assume it was too in a state of crap. But hell, even if the pool was amazing this place would still suck immensly. If you need to say some bucks, and be close to the quartier, then this is still not an ideal choice as cleaner, cheaper and closer hotels can be had. Parking is 15 bucks extra per night as well. Cash grab. You can walk to the quartier from here, but you may not want to late at night as this area is kinda dodgy. I would cab it there.

PROS:
NONE!!

CONS:
EVERYTHING!!

It is a shame you cannot give negative stars to this horrible place...they should PAY the guests to stay here!!

We would not even stay here. Yes it is close to Bourbon st. No it is not clean. Do not stay here!!!!! There was like 25 homeless people sleeping under i-10 not more than 20ft from their front door. they charge 14 dollars a night to park there.the hotel stunk really badly. the rooms were even worse. Trust me dont be fooled by the nice picture!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This has to be one of the worst motels I have ever stayed in. I booked it through the Days Inn website, and when I was checking in, the clerk told the guy behind me that the rate was $10 less than what I was being charged. The Days Inn website says they have valet parking for $14 and that's a joke. The clerk charged me anyway but the said she would waive the charge (we'll get back to this). Parking garage is cramped and hard to negotiate and dark and feels dangerous, My room was incredibly shabby: one lamp was hanging off the wall, the heater was hard if not impossible to control, the TV cabinet was broken, there was mold on the shower curtain and no wastebasket. There was a safe in the room that I definitely wanted to use, because the place felt very insecure, but it was locked. So I called the front desk and asked if they could unlock it and was told that they could get someone up there in an hour (and I wanted to go out and get dinner then, as it was getting late). And there was no coffeemaker, refrigerator, micowave, hair dryer, iron and board and USA Today in the lobby as the Days Inn website promised. The next morning at check out, the parking charge was on my bill. The clerk said she'd try to waive it (she was very nice and tried to be helpful), but when I asked for the manager, she said he was not there and might be back in an hour. I don't know if it was a result of her attempts to waive the parking charge and give me a lower rate (she offered it), but my credit card was overcharged nearly twice the original rate that I was still charged (and I imagine now it will take weeks to fix that). The wirelss internet did work, but the clerk at check in said they had just rebooted it two days ago and "it should work." After Katrina, one has to cut NO hotels a little slack, but avoid this place like the plague.

EasyClick rooms are usually refundable, so you might want to book it as a backup. But if $100/night is the budget, it's pretty likely something much nicer will come along.

WHOA...I agree the Days is maybe not the best but I have stayed there several times over the last five years and it is livable if you get the right room....The rooms to the front of the building on Canal are fairly decent it is the interior rooms and rooms to the back that are kinda murky,,,I always ask for a switch and have recieved it,
I have found the management to be lacking but the staff especially housekeeping to be friendly and accomodating, The wifi worked great when I was there in 2006 cannot say the same for the Crowne Plaza which had mouse traps under the beds....
It is an ok place if you are just going to crash there but I have always taken a cab back at night even from the quarter because it is East of Rampart ....
Staying there for voodoo for $50 bucks at night so I'll report back ......
