So if you were stranded on an island, what cds would you want in your backpack? No more than 10.

Clarification please.....
If the issue contains two CDs, does that count as two...or should we say for example: Springsteen "The River" CD #1...????

OMG. Yall are such inquiring minds. Box sets and sets with more than one cd count as 1. Eps are 1/2. The island is warm. The cannibals have left for tastier digs. Other peeps are on the island. And you can listen to their cds. You have one cd player with lots of batteries.

I'm too tired to think too much about this right now, but I can say without question my most recent purchase would definately be there. After hearing Susan Tedeschi do "The Weight" with ABB at JF, I decided to check out some of her stuff. This weekend I picked up her latest, "Hope & Desire"......I can't say enough good stuff about it. It's been on a loop since Sunday at my house!

Then of course, I'd pack along some Buffet.....just to keep my spirits up!!

the whole box set things messes it up for me because i am afraid i'll have so many cd's that it really doesn't pair down much for me. so for this purpose i will give only 10 each cd counts as one for me-
1. brian eno- music for airports
2. miles davis- kind of blue
3. keith jarrett- the kohl concert
4. the rolling stones- exile on main street
5. the velvet underground- the velvet underground
6. xtc- english settlement
7. the pixies- surfer rosa
8. the pogues- rum, sodomy and the lash
9. neil young- everyone knows this is nowhere
10. the smiths- the queen is dead

then maybe i'd get on a mailing list with the rest of the t-heads that are stranded and hope we can get an exchange going.

LOL, mgreg. Tonight. That's a great way to put it.That's great news because that means if i need to, I can have a new list tomorrow. ;) Love talking about music though and love seeing everyone's lists.

Uncle Fester, juana had a pogues cd in her bunch of cds she had on our Mississippi trip last weekend and she said that bunch of cds were her island cds, which is what gave me the idea for this thread.

aw man, these are always so tough! I prolly give different answers each time...

in no particular order:
Jeff Beck- Truth (with omg, rod)
The Band- the Band (actually a tie with Big Pink. King Harvest tips the scale- still in love with that tune. You can get both if you go with the Greatest Hits cd)
Pink Floyd- Animals
Pink Floyd- Wish You Were Here
Rolling Stones- Let It Bleed/ Beggar's Banquet (can't choose)
King Crimson- Sleepless (a time capsule from '69 to y2k, from Lake to Belew)
John Coltrane- A Love Supreme
Miles- Kind Of Blue
Jimi- Axis: Bold As Love
ten already? this is cruel...

LOL, RT. I started to put the Big Ole Box Set but took it off.

Way cruel, Bry. I've changed my mind. Woman's prerogative. I think it should be no more than 20. That's 3 so far for Miles' Kind of Blue. And there's no Allmans on your list...

By the way, some great selections here.

You sure can! It was tough for me to choose just one Hendrix recording. It would be like asking me if my barn was on fire, which horse would I lead out first!

The reasons I chose B.O.G. were because it is a live recording which reflects the genius of Jimi with no studio noodling and because of the synergy among the players. Billy Cox makes Hendrix take the solos away from him and pushes his playing just a notch higher. Plus, the main line of "Who Knows" is so spooky... I love it.

Buddy Miles provides such excellent support on the drum kit and contributes two songs to the effort. His Changes is an anthem and should be required reading for any funk band.

Of course, Machine Gun still tears me up every time I hear it, to this very day.

One of the many great things about listening to Hendrix's music is that it inspires a curiosity about other forms of music and the origins of what he plays.

Oh, BTW... I noticed that my original post omitted one of my original 10.
It's Destively Baonnaroo, by Dr. John.:o

For an appropriate title, someone should bring "On An Island," David Gilmour. Not exactly a favorite but not bad. Bought it so I could listen to it on Tybee Island.

By the way, some great selections here.

Ok, then throw in Best of Leon Russell (http://www.google.com/musicl?lid=qs4W1sHstwM&aid=E2khVyKxQRB)with "Back to the Island"

John.:o

yea u rite SS....BOG is a more raw live feel .....the other albums shows
jimis genius in the studio...i believe he was ahead of the beatles with
his psychedlic musical ideas......
however on Electric Ladyland there is a live in the studio recording
of Voodoo Chile....with steve windwood on organ....smoking tune...
and you hear hendrix inhaling deeply and saying....go on little stevie..go on..

Yes, E.L. is my 2nd fav Hendrix recording. I love Voodoo Chile' and Voodoo Chile'(Slight Return) and Rainy Day, Dream Away for exactly the reasons you mention. Yes, he was light years ahead of the Beatles, and everybody else, at the time. A true innovator, it is mindboggling to think that he played the guitar for only 11 years.

Have you heard the Radio One disc? I bought it a few years ago and it is a lot of fun.

One of the funniest phrases in his work (at least I find it humorous) is how he inserts a line from "Strangers In The Night" into his reworking of the Trogg's "Wild Thing."

It was sort of a dig at the Stones, and a sly comment on the buying public's fickle listening tastes, all at the same time due to Sinatra's "Strangers" knocking the Stones' "Paint It, Black" from the #1 position on the charts.

Anyway, it is sad that Jimi didn't have the time to explore all of his ideas on this go-round. His was a vital and genuine musical voice.

Wouldn't it be cool, though, if Dumpstaphunk did a version of "Changes"?:)

yea u rite...i dont have the radio one disc.....but...
...i would have loved to see hendrix do some music with miles davis.
i was lucky enuf to see jimi twice....one time was really memorable..
it was a movie theater......sly and the family stone were opening act...
this was before sly was famous...they were amazing...wild...etc...
and then jimi, noel, and mitch mitchell came out and just blew the place
away...i still get a chill thinkin about it...his spirit and his music is still with us.

You were lucky to have seen him twice!

I never saw him perform. I asked my parents if I could buy a ticket for the show and they said okay. I was about 12 years old and I saved up some baby-sitting money and bought a ticket. It cost about $1.75.

When the night of the show came, neither would give me a ride to the show! Parents!!!:( They can be so frustrating!!! I guess they were just doing their job, but the JHE never came back through here again.

I kept that ticket for the longest time. Probably lost it the time everything I owned, except the clothes I was wearing and my car, was stolen in New Orleans.

That must have been some show w/ Sly & the Family Stone! :)

xcusee meee while i kiss the sky..definitely a nice list sis! I got to ten before I really got started on Jimi. I love EL, it was the first Jimi I trully fell in love with. I prefer his studio stuff for that very reason, really lets me drift away almost like meditation. I also used to love 'Cry of Love' album, which was thrown together immediately after his death. So I was happy when his family foundation released most of those tunes on 'First Rays of The New Rising Sun'. These are the tunes he was working on when he died. They even had some of his notes to help put together the album as closely as possible to he would have. Highly highly recommend it!
