The '94 Fest is still my all time favorite. When Bobby King and Terry Evans came out to sing with Ry Cooder, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

That weekend was very special to me. When Ry played with David Lindley, I was moving in the heaven direction. After the set with Ali Farka Toure I knew I was there...

Shirley Ceasar was probably the biggest gospel name in the country then. Plus you have some big NOLA acts -- Neville Brothers, Radiators, Dave Bartholomew, Aretha, Wynton Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, Johnny Adams, Pete Fountain, etc...

That's the whole point. The BNA's that some of us would rather not see dominating the billing and the budget of the Fest are the Big National Acts that aren't NOLA or genre related to the musical mission of the festival.

1994 was special to me because it was our first Jazzfest...and we definitely weren't there for the BNAs, atlhough we certainly caught Aretha. I especially remember seeing Aaron with the Zion Harmonizers for the first time.
I know this was the year right after the grandstands burned down...but the thing that I didn't remember is that there was no Fais-Do-Do stage that year according to Swag's site...was it renamed in 94--95?

Interesting. Looks like '93 there was a FDD, the "Blues Stage" was B-97? Godz it's all a blur.
'94 - FDD is now B-97/Bellsouth and HOB starts up at the Blues Stage?
'95 - FDD is Bellsouth.
'96 - FDD returns, Bellsouth does the Lagniappe tent.
TY, swag :)

'94 was an all-time fav as Amy and I were on the 4th week of a 6 wk honeymoon. Visited the 4 corners and then on to both JF weekends.
That Sunday schedule reminds me that there was a wedding at the Iguana's stage that year.
First time I ever heard the Tan Canary Johnny Adams and he was jaw dropping
Wynton played in the old on the grass jazz tent and Dr. Michael White came on stage with his horn section to do some rollicking trad tunes with Wynton's band, Wow!
Closing with the Nevilles (loved Harry but.....)
I have about 5 t-shirts from that year (most bought later) and the left half of the Peter Max poster and A tile of the full poster over out stove.
The last year i was able to make both weekends ( pesky children)
ahhh!! '94
Moon,
I'm wondering what the first one might be??
Blues Cruise on the Riverboat in '87 I think. John Lee Hooker, Bonnie Raitt, Dr.John, and The Fabulous Thunderbirds. You could barely understand a word Hooker said but his singing voice was as deep and rich as ever and his guitar rang like a bell. Bonnie did a Lowell George and Duane Allman tribute and was joined by Dickey Betts on "Statesboro Blues". Dr. John got down so low he had to get up and dance. And the Thunderbirds lived up to their rep as the best bar band to ever hit big. We also bumped into Ed Bradley in the toilet. When he asked us how we were doing, my buddy Greg said "No comment."
Seeing John Lee Hooker while he still had his chops was a dream come true. When he did "I'm In the Mood", I looked at my girlfriend du jour and imediately knew what was going to happen later.
