Swag will be in da houze.
I may or may not attend. My two friends who were supposed to come with me both have had to suddenly cancel their trip due to emergencies and I don't know if I want to go it alone for the 4 days I was planning to attend. I think I'll wait until the last minute to decide. So you can put me on the "maybe" list...

Saturday the 4th is my son's b-day but he's 15 so I'll likely be driving him someplace and then free. So I'll pop in for sure, hopefully more, at Festgiving. Don't know what's up w/ Swampfest and haven't even looked at Mirliton. Is that Sunday? One way or the other, I'll see ya that weekend though. When do you come and go?

Mirliton is on Saturday. Not totally sure of the time frame, but I guess a lot of us are doing that and doing Swampie on Sun. I get in on Friday afternoon and leave Mon AM (early-uggghh as I have to work Mon eve).

Has Swampie been on the new board yet? Somebody tell her she's got an obligation in NOLA and she will now need to come for Swamp Fest :) :)
I'm thinking Mirliton Saturday. We leave Sunday so don't know if we'll make Swamp Fest at all of if we'll just do brunch & cocktails in the quarter and take it easy.
We're doing the 30+ hour blitz, red eye Friday night in 8am Saturday (when do they start serving hand grenades on Bourbon Street??) back out Sunday 5pm. Short and sweet!

I will be in town for 11 days. I usually go for fest and in the fall, hopefully including Halloween. When I made the reservation I didn't even realize that I would be there for Swamp Fest (which I've never been to); and had no idea that Mirliton Fest existed. I'll be there! Can never have enough fests....New Orleans is the greatest! Also, many thanks to you Jenn for the invite to Festgiving....didn't know about that either. So, I am counting down till this trip....definitely some new and fun events that sound very enjoyable. Not to mention starting my vacation on Halloween night. Well, I've worked hard enough since my last trip...and I'm ready to let loose. I'm just so happy that the long hot summer is over (I'm in the Keys of course), and it cooks for 5 months! Our first cool air blew in today....heavenly! Also, we made it (hopefully) without any storms or hurricanes....the predicted active season was a dud (gratefully!) and above all, New Orleans was spared any aggravation this season. Looking forward to meeting those of you who will be there

Yay Bruce & Dan! See ya there.
I noticed the Intercontinental Hotel has a Jazz Brunch on Sundays 11-2:30 featuring Mark Braud (trumpet) and Dr. Michael White (clarinet), among other top musicians. Jenn, you're the one in the know - have you ever attended this brunch or know anyone who has?

11-06-2006, 07:42 PM
Airport was a little crowded, but easy to get around in. I'm cross-posting my rant, then (maybe) I'll shut up.
We booked our Swampfest tix a long time ago, red eye Friday night back Sunday afternoon. A couple of days before departure they call to tell us our red eye out has been canceled, they can fly us out at 6:30pm with a long overnight layover in Salt Lake, not to Atlanta until 5am, then on to NOLA. Hmm, no thanks. They finally put us on another red eye out of SFO, of course we were booked last so we both had middle seats to try to sleep in and Jeff's 6'6"
We get to Atlanta at 6am, our 9am flight has mechanical problems. We go get on the 10am flight, once we're all seated, more mechanical problems and they loaded us all off the plane. 11am flight was full, our new flight didn't take off until just before noon and it was after noon when we finally got to NOLA. To make it up to us, they gave us $2 headphones for free. Wow.
On the way back, of course our flight out of NOLA is delayed. We still could have made our San Fran connection, but the plane sat on the runway for about 20 minutes and our flight was closed before we even got off the plane. We asked them to call ahead and hold it for us, they said they couldn't. We ran up to the gate, plane is still sitting there, and they won't let us on. By this time we're very frustrated and Jeff loses his cool a bit and says something like kiss my azz.
Which is not a good idea. They then declared him (and me b/c we're traveling together) "security risks" and threatened police or to refuse to let us fly on their airline at all and simply cancel our tickets. Regardless, there were no other flights out at night so it wouldn't have mattered, but because of our "behavior," we were on our own for a hotel for the night. Amazingly we got on standby for the 9am flight, I was sure that wasn't going to work out and we'd either be flying back to Oakland or through Salt Lake killing pretty much the whole day on the way back.
All of the delays, etc., were bad enough, but okay, those things happen. But to push you past the breaking point, and then to have the gate agent sneering at you, and to make you feel like a criminal for complaining, just inexcusable. I hope to never fly them again, and certainly not through Atlanta.

It sounds like you guys got put through the cheese-grater, amy. I can see why your last nerve would be frayed at that point. My husband does an awful lot of business travel year 'round, and I swear, if I had to travel the way he does, I would be completely insane.
I don't think you were treated fairly by Delta. Since you & Jeff do a lot of travel throughout the year, I think you should write a letter to management. I'm sure some higher-ups would like to hear about the poor treatment you were given and the inconveniences you had to deal with.
Sorry to hear you had such a negative travel experience.
stynger
11-06-2006, 07:56 PM
Wow sorry you had to go thru that nightmare. Travelling can be a bitch sometimes. Especially when you only have a couple of days for vacation. It's never cool to get the attitude from people who are supposed to help you. I didn't realize it was striking a nerve with you. I was just kidding about my Atlanta remark. I hope the venting helps.
Amy Winette
11-06-2006, 08:01 PM
It does, thanks guys! Just chaps my hide that because we lost our cool a little bit we surrendered any right to take the moral high ground and instead got treated like the bad guys. If people had just tried to help us rather than giving us attitude, I'd feel a whole lot differently about the experience. I was literally crying and I don't do that much, no one even so much as offered me a kleenex. I'm pretty sure a strongly worded letter will be written . . . Jeff flies Delta home to Montana about once a month, but United and Alaskan fly there too . . .

Amy, from reading your post about the whole trip, it looks as if the only mistake you made was booking with them in the first place!
Those bastards! Making our amy cry. They oughta be strung up by their thumbs! I hope you do write a letter to them. It was just plain wrong.
Glad you made it home okay, though.:)

This looks like an episode from the show "Airline" on A&E. It is true stories about Soutwest Airlines. There are always people crying, drinking, and cursing. The airline gestapo always finds a way to throw them off and the situation is solved in 1/2 hour.
I'm sorry that you and Jeff had such a hard time with them. Do as suggested and tell them exactly what you think and let your $$$ do the talking. Don't let those b*st*rds ruin a good New Orleans buzz that you had on your whirlwind visit here. When you feel down, think of Hebjamn's crawfish bread---that's sure to bring a smile:D

After the hell ride y'all had both to and fro 'fest I am proposing a TH boycott on Delta. I gave up flying them a few years back after a similar treatment. I was once told in a customer service class that a person who has a good experience usually tells 1 to 2 people on average, while a person who has a poor experience tells 5 to 10 people. I think this could reach a few more than 5 to 10 :D BTW, I am glad y'all did make it down and it was big fun hanging with everyone.

I think I'm going to widely post our experience to friends and family and let them know how many people we've told who hopefully also won't be flying their airline again . . .
YYR, the crawfish bread alone made the trip worth it nonetheless :)
We've been on Southwest and US Air when they've overbooked (all the time), they're still courteous and offer free flights, generally people don't go away too unhappy . . . This is the most violated I've ever felt by airline travel!

Am - We had a terrible experience with Delta both to and from NOLA. The harsher of the 2 was on the return flight and we both said Delta sucks and we'll try to never fly them again too!
But it was fantastic to see everyone! :) Had a great great time!
We're thinking about Mardi Gras too!

Yep, for any other trip that much travel pain wouldn't have been worth it, but I'd do it in a heart beat for NOLA again. Mmmmm, Mardi Gras, kind of near my b-day . . .

Good Call!
I will go far out of my way to avoid flying on Delta. I have probably 100K miles in their program that will expire unused because I refuese to be put through all the crap you have to take when you fly with them. Delta is without a doubt the worst airline I've ever encountered. They must teach the customer service reps and flight attendants special ways to be rude to customers. Their planes are dirty, their baggage handling is miserable, they overbook and consistently cancel flights and miss connections. Stay away stay away stay away stay away stay away...
(rant over, nice to see everyone last weekend at Festgiving!)

AND their planes are all breaking down, we should take a poll of how many had "mechanical problems" this past weekend . . .
But, yeah, great to see everyone this past weekend too. Just sorry we didn't get to stay longer. Swampfest at the zoo looked so awesome in everyone's pix, and seeing Shamar's new band . . . Real bummed we missed all that . . . Next year!
