I thought this idea deserved it's own thread, as folks were discussing the fest and perhaps sponsoring local kids who might not be able to afford a ticket to Jazz Fest.

We have been marginally involved with but very supportive of a local group called called Silence is Violence who is trying to enact change on a person to person, neighborhood by neighborhood basis.
http://www.silenceisviolence.org/

As I was perusing their website tonight, I saw where they sponsor youth music clinics for kids on Wednesdays:
Youth Music Clinics.

Every Wednesday, local professional musicians lead music clinics at Sound Cafe for New Orleans children of all ages. The clinics include both vocal and instrumental training, and they are followed by a performance by Glen David Andrews and the Lazy Six.
WHEN: Every Wednesday, 6pm
WHERE: Sound Cafe, 2700 Chartres Street (corner of Port), New Orleans
WHAT: Free Music Clinics and music performance! Dinner provided for children under 12.

Wouldn't it be cool if the Threadheads could sponsor a group of these kids for a day at Jazz Fest?

This is just a raw egg, not even hatched, but I would be glad to be a local contact and work with Silence is Violence and the Fest, along with a committee of THs. In the 90s I worked with the fest to obtain fest tickets for an HIV group I worked with, so they could go to fest and have a contact there still.

I'm just tossing things around in my mind right now, but as time goes by, I think this would be a great way to get young, urban kids who are already interested in music a chance to go to fest.

VERY cool, Bry! I knew I could count on you! :)

I have already sent an email to Ms. Baty Landis, owner of Sound Cafe and board member of Silence isViolence to see if there is any interest there and to kind of get the ball rolling.
Last year while visiting Bob French at WWOZ, I was introduced to Don Marshall, executive director of the Fest Foundation. I copied him on the email, as well as a personal friend of ours who is a member of the foundation board. (I'll tap them for tickets later.) ;)

Thanks for everyone's support. I can feel in my heart that this is a good thing! :)

ALLLRIGHT!!! (He's a very nice guy, huh?) Our friend on the board is Johnny Jackson, formerly of the city council and Captain of the Zulu Diamnond Cutters (former boss of Ms. Lena!). Between the two of them, I figure if they look at past Threadhead philanthropic efforts, we might get a sweet deal on tickets. :)

What's the age group of the kids? In my very limited experience some kids don't like being called kids! Maybe something with youth.

Mind racing off here, but maybe the kids could have an informal comp to name the event themselves and perhaps even create a design. Winner on a tee.

Just some thoughts [dangerous, I know].
If worked through the NOJF Foundation I'm sure there would be a big break on ticket prices, the ones donated from them are at least half the price of gate tickets.
NOMC and Tip's Foundation might also be interested in helping out.
Silence is Violence is a great resource too, they are doing an outstanding job from what I've seen so far. We prolly need them in every urban city...

I tossed this idea out to Juana this weekend, while we were traveling to MS to HWY61 blues fest. And another idea hit me. Maybe we should consider giving each musician 2 tickets=one for the musician and one for a parent. That way we can help out some of the adults who are missing jazzfest too.

And I picked up a similar project in Greenville this weekend. TModel Ford's 8 year old grandson, Gentle aka Stud, has started playing drums in public. He's played at home for a while and just started playing publicly last fall. He played with TModel at Hwy61fest this weekend (see my review of the fest on the general music discussion forum). His drum kit, which was at home, has a broken snare and a messed up cymbal so Cedric Burnside, Lightning Malcolm and I are working on getting a new kit for him. If anyone wants to contribute to this project, email me at musiclover at conwaycorp dot net.

HEALED BY HARMONY
Katrina became a clarion call for an Oregon musician devastated by his son's death, summoning him here to give away instruments
Sunday, June 03, 2007
By Darran Simon
Staff writer

The piano man tried to avoid thinking too much. He filled his head with radio music during his 2,800-mile cross-country drive, but he cried a lot anyway.

The memories kept coming back: his son winning a fourth-grade contest by cranking out 100 sit-ups and then asking his father to hold his legs so he could try for 500, and then the terrible fight that the boy lost, the one that pitted him against a rare form of cancer.

A gangly bass player by the time he died, the son, Steven, was the reason his father, Peter Spring, drove from Oregon to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, pulling a trailer of donated musical instruments.

Spring had never visited the city, but somehow he had absorbed its culture. Back in Oregon, he would play a dirge and do his own second-line when he learned that a jazz great had died. Coming to New Orleans, he said, was his way to "pay down some of the debt" he felt he owed a city and people who invented the music he and his son loved.

In his son's memory, Spring decided to use the music to boost morale, heal troubled souls and become a "third responder," a term he coined. Through the Steven Spring Foundation, which he founded in the fall of 2005, Spring has given out hundreds of instruments to New Orleans musicians and tuned pianos for free or at reduced rates.

He set up his piano tuning business first in Faubourg Marigny, then moved it to Bywater. Today he tunes pianos and provides moving and repair services for the Recovery School District.

As an encore, Spring, 57, is planning a free music camp for Frederick Douglass Senior High School students and others this summer at the warehouse where he lives and works.

The camp is intended to help Douglass rebuild its band, but no elementary, middle or high school student will be turned away as long as there is space. The Douglass band now has 35 members, but many are beginners.

Ali Muhammad, the band's director, hopes the summer program will be both a bonding experience for band members and a recruiting tool.

"Hopefully it's going to help us do what we are really designed to do," Muhammad said. "The band is a tremendous ambassador for the school and for the district. It is going to help us get in performance shape so we can help represent our community and our school."

Spring calls the summer music camp "Music to the people!"

It started with a sore

Spring's son, Steven, took 48 hours to come into this world. He sported a mohawk as a child and one year gave his parents his summer savings of almost $1,000 so they could pay the mortgage after moving to southern Oregon.

Peter Spring made bamboo flutes and for several years sold them on weekends on the craft show circuit, freeing up the rest of the week to be home with his two children. Classically trained, Spring also taught music and ran a piano tuning business in Oregon. His daughter, Amanda, took up the drums and today plays with an Oregon band.

Steven aimed to make a career as a bass player, even though his favorite joke was that the difference between a musician and a pizza was that a pizza could feed a family of four.

When Steven was 13, his parents discovered a sore on his right toe. It turned out to be a rare form of bone cancer. His was one of only about 100 cases nationwide, the doctor told them. The doctor said he would have to amputate a piece of the toe and offered a warning: He had recently had to amputate the foot of another teenager with the same rare cancer because the boy had waited too long before seeking treatment.

The doctor's voice cracked with emotion as he gave them the bad news, and Steven and his father put their arms on his shoulder, comforting the comforter.

The cancer returned when Steven was 15, and doctors cut off two more pieces of the same toe. At 21, he was studying bass on scholarship at Mount Hood College when a sore on his shoulder and a persistent cough sent him back to the doctor. He had this advice for his parents: Look past the doctor visits and the medicine; pretend the cancer doesn't exist.

Then came the thunderbolt: Steven had two inoperable tumors in his brain. The cancer had engulfed his liver and kidneys. His face swelled from the drugs, a common side effect of steroids. Three months before he died, he sat in with the horn-based soul band Tower of Power -- a young man holding his own among seasoned musicians. He was still playing with buddies three weeks before he died on the last day of January 2002. He was 22.

An idea spawned from loss

"The most amazing thing about my son, and the inspiration for me for the rest of my life, is that not once through any of the surgeries, through any of that whole cancer experience, did any family member or medical personnel or friend or audience member ever hear him complain or get bitter or resentful or waste any time or call attention to himself," Spring said. "He just played as hard as he could right up to the end. So, he set the bar pretty high for me, and that's what I got to live up to right now."

The bereaved father spent three years trying to process his loss and, as he put it, to "keep breathing and figure out the deeper meaning of what we're all here for."

Katrina prompted him to start the foundation in Steven's name and help New Orleans musicians. He decided a week after Katrina to move to New Orleans.

The timing was right. Spring was divorced and had no mortgage to hold him down; Amanda was grown. To raise money for the foundation, he organized a jam session at his mother's church in Ashland, a small theater-rich town in southern Oregon. Neighbors dug through attics and closets in search of instruments left behind by grown children. Spring hitched up a trailer, loaded it with guitars, violins, trumpets and the like, and hit the road.

"I feel a profound debt to, particularly, the African-American people, for inventing jazz, which I think is the best thing that's come out of America," Spring said.

Piano giveaway

He met musicians at jam sessions and clubs in New Orleans and started giving away the instruments. He heard about vocalist Barbara Lane from members of the New Orleans Jazz Vipers and realized he might be of use to her.

One morning a year or so ago, he woke her up with a phone call. "Is this Barbara Lane? I hear that you need a piano," he began.

"What, are you selling one?" she asked, still groggy after a late-night gig.

Lane had sold her grand piano before Katrina. Spring told her a woman of her talent should not be without one.

"I just got out of bed. Let me lay back down again," the amazed Lane, a songwriter as well as singer, told Spring.

A few days later, Spring showed up, pulling an upright piano in his trailer. Lane took photos because she couldn't believe it. She offered him a cup of coffee, and Spring eased the piano into her living room, close to her CDs and sheet music.

"I was just like a giggling little child in a toy store, such a beautiful, beautiful soul he is," Lane said, recalling the moment. "Granted I can go out and buy myself a piano, but this thing was given to me, and I won't change it for nothing. That thing is going to be with me forever."

As she told the story, she fingered the keys and said how much she admires the piano's tone: "The bass just billows through my house."

Keeping the faith

Spring has spent some mornings giving lessons to Douglass band members. He moved a piano into the band room and tuned it as students watched. He has donated some pianos and sold others.

He said he gives himself another three years in New Orleans. Before he goes, he hopes to start a church in his Bywater shop and call it the First United Temple of Harmony, a place open to music lovers of all faiths. On the walls, he would hang pictures of Louis Armstrong and Johann Sebastian Bach.

Music, Spring said, is the "deepest most visceral connection to the divine."

His time in New Orleans has confirmed another deeply held belief: "I have absolutely no doubt that I am in the right place doing the right thing."

. . . . . . .

We have enough time that we can make a real difference for those kids. Here is the letter I got from Baty Landis at SiV:

Ms. Rooney,
Thanks so much for getting in touch about sponsoring SilenceIsViolence
kids at Jazz Fest next year. We would love it. Because we are an
all-volunteer organization (unlike some of the other, perhaps
better-known local organizations you may have worked with), in order
to accomplish something meaningful for the kids, it will cost us about
$150 per day, per kid. This would cover tickets, food, transportation
to and from the Festival, and expenses and a stipend for a guardian
who could stay with them during the trip (one guardian for each two
kids). So, if you would like to sponsor four different kids on each
of two days, for example, expenses would run $1,200. We could work
with more or fewer kids, depending on what level sponsorship you have
in mind.
I think this is a great idea and a wonderful way to reach local youth
as well as support the efforts of a small-scale, very active
organization! Thanks for thinking of us-

Just thinkin' out loud here, but the letter mentioned expenses and a stipend for guardians for the kids. Maybe a handful of threadheads would donate their time one day to chaperone a couple of kids at the fest. It might result in some serious FOMS, but it might be worth it to bring a smile to some kid's face and let them experience the wonderful world of Jazz Fest. And it would make the money we raise go a lot further and maybe enable us to include more kids. I wonder what the qualifications are for being a guardian...

ibjamn
06-08-2007, 03:16 PM
That thought crossed my mind, Frank, but I also thought that so many THs give their time now, working at Ms. Lena's. That's quite a sacrifice during a precious, short vacation. I was actually hoping the chaperones would be parents, or even musicians. (as kk had mentioned) I'm sure more will be ironed out over the coming months. But I love all the ideas & and making a list!

jhjpotter
06-08-2007, 03:20 PM
Great idea jenn!! I agree Frank. I read that $150 number and I would think $150 could be stretched a bit more. The program obviously has done this and been through it before, so they probably have it pretty well figured out, but again, during fest time, it would probably be pretty easy to get a lineup of volunteers through FestAid to get guardians. If it involves a ticket for the guardian, it might be a good way to get more locals coming to the fest too who might otherwise be deterred by the rising cost of tickets.

swag
06-08-2007, 03:41 PM
Well, how old are these kids? I wouldn't want to spend a whole day in the Kids area, but if they are old enough to be at the main stages, then chaparoning might not be a drag at all.

Michelino
06-08-2007, 04:09 PM
When I read that $150, my first thought was...that's a real adminstrative wollop.

But then I costed it out with 2 tickets, 2 sets of travel expenses, food and beverage...even with volunteer time, it seems be to more a reasonable estimate...Certainly, there are ways to cut costs....donated tickets, etc....volunteers who do not require a stipend.

It would nice to see how the original per diem was broken down according to category and then maybe we could see where to substitute other resources....for example, soliciting vendors to donate food at cost perhaps..

One thing is that with the responsibility of taking care of other people's children, volunteers THs will want to be properly covered by insurance of some sort...maybe some sponsoring corporation will extend it's umbrella or maybe SIV has this covered.

YAY! another way to give back! I love it! When the website is up & running can we post info about it on say "myspace" and other places to get the word out? now that I think about it I guess it may be time to remove the TH Raffle Banner from "myspace" page ...

ozzie
06-08-2007, 04:12 PM
I'm up for including costs for a guardian... the more locals enjoying Fest the merrier. It's a long way off and lots of dolla raising and talking with Baty to do yet, but when we know each other better and have an idea of the threadhead $$ involved, I'd rather see our donation getting more folk into Fest. $150pp per day is pretty steep and I would hope that through our collective resources we could bring that cost down so more kids/guardians can enjoy the experience. Could we run tab at Ms Lenas for drinks? Having said that, even at $150 per... that's a lot of kids we can sponsor!

The volunteer thing is harder... would you entrust your kid to a stranger for the day? Crap, I'm having trouble getting Ken's soon to be 20 year old grandbaby into my care for Fest! Maybe aside from Ms Lenas we could have a meet up at a predetermined stage and all enjoy some music together. So while I'd love to meet all and spend some time with... I'm out on being a guardian.

Thanks so much Jenn, 'tis a good thing you do.

Well, how old are these kids? I wouldn't want to spend a whole day in the Kids area, but if they are old enough to be at the main stages, then chaparoning might not be a drag at all.

The kids we are talking about are all ages, taking part in SIV free music clinics every Wed. Local musicians are donating their time to teach. They provide dinner for kids under 12. More info is at their website: www.silenceisviolence.org (http://www.silenceisviolence.org)
Again, we've only gotten one email from them. As we have 10 months till fest, it seems we should raise some money for our cause and work out the details as time goes on when we find out more about how they work and they find out the same about us.

I give up something, so I can donate. Give up the coffee in the morning at Starbucks, give up the soda in the middle of the day, bring your lunch to work with you. You save some money & take that money & give it back. I can save $150 this year & save $150 next year to give to this cause. That's $300 that I can give to this cause & maybe make a differance in a child's life. That is priceless.

I haven't said this, and I hope I don't really have to, but count me in on this.

I love youth music, and attend/sponser a good deal of it locally. So, the idea of having a few of these kids play a mini-set at the patry really appeals to me.

I like FEST4KIDZ as a name, although I would like FEST4KIDS better.

Anyway, I'm in and glad to be in.

I joined this forum to get info for my virgin NOLA JF. Who knew it would become a year-round activity for me? Is this a cool place, or what?

Having just read this thread from start to finish, it reinforces for me what an amazing group of souls the Threadhead Nation is made up of. We look forward to being part of this worthy endeavor.
I know CBH will design something way cool, but I also want to suggest that the poem by Jordan's son, Nathaniel, about Jazz Fest, really captures the feeling of Fest. I know I plan to buy one of the T-shirts (CBH, can I get a tank?). Maybe we can raise some additional funds by purchasing Kidz4Fest stuff.

Bro, we are not a 501c3 organization. I looked into that and it costs nearly $1000 to do that. We are setting up a dedicated bank account just for collecting this money for SIV. We already have a paypal account that will be attached to this account so people can donate by check or credit card. All the funds will be given to SIV earmarked for the Fest4Kidz program. (Over and above any paypal fees which will be built into the donation.)
The accounting of this account will be open and available to anyone who donates or requests it.
The only drawback is that the individual does not get a tax credit for their donation.

excellente....excellente......beautiful graphics...thanks to susan and guzilla..
id like to ask a question tho....lets say we come up with more money
than silence is violence has kids participating in their clinic...
or the wednesday nite workshops stop happening....
there are other youth clinics going on around the city also...
no jazz national park has one every saturday morning...storyville stompers
and treme brass teach the kids...
tipitinas has one on sunday afternoons...
ashe cultural center has one also...
rebirth brass band has started one...
etc.
are we sure we want to be tied in to silence is violence exclusively?
this is not a knock on silence is violence in any way...
they are doing great things...

So, this seems to explain some things ;) ;) ;) Giving to charities activates our "pleasure centers"!!!

Brain gets a thrill from charity: study
Thu Jun 14, 2007 5:10PM ED

By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Knowing your money is going to a good cause can activate some of the same pleasure centers in your brain as food and sex, U.S. researchers said on Thursday.

People who participated in a study got a charge knowing that their money went to a charity -- even when the contribution was mandatory, like a tax. They felt even better when they voluntarily made a donation, researchers found.

Ulrich Mayr, a psychology professor at the University of Oregon, said the research sheds light on the nature of altruism and could help people feel better about being taxed.

"It shows that in an ideal world you could have a tax situation where you could be a satisfied taxpayer," said Mayr, whose study appeared in the journal Science.

In the study, Mayr and two economists gave 19 women volunteers $100 each and then tracked their brain activity in a functional magnetic resonance imaging scanner.

The women were shown their money automatically being transferred from their account to a local food bank.

When the money reached the food bank account, it activated portions of the brain -- the caudate nucleus and the nucleus accumbens -- known for pleasure. The effect was even greater when the people got to choose to give the money away.

"What is interesting is that these pleasure areas are for really basic needs, like food, sex, sweets, shelter and social connection," Ulrich said in a telephone interview. "It's the area that tells the brain what is good for us."

As it turns out, "That very same brain area not only tracks what is good for us, but what is good for others," he said.

He and colleagues were hoping to find out whether there was something in the act of giving itself -- and not just the social and egotistical reward of being a philanthropist -- that offers satisfaction.

"The fact that we find pleasurable activity in those mandatory tax-like situations strongly suggests the existence of pure altruism," he said.

Of course, simulating a tax is quite different from paying taxes to a government with policies you may or may not support, he noted.

"What it shows is that, in principle, we are capable of feeling good about doing our share," he said.

"The question is, 'Why is it that so often we feel bad about filling out our taxes?' Our study shows it is worth looking for an answer."

The logo looks really wonderful (Woo Hoo!) and I'm excited about it :D . . . I just have a really stupid question (not unusual for me) - a couple of the kids look somewhat sad/downcast/dejected in their body language . . . are they supposed to?

I guess I was thinking that the idea was that kids would have a more active, festive attitude - but I'm probably unclear on the concept and lacking a clue (as usual).

Yep - I'm excited! Myspace bulletins would be great. I have the graphic on my myspace.Folks, I'll set up a graphic and coding after we launch the site. That way anyone can post it on their site or myspace page and it will be clickable...
