Absolutely amazing! Threadheads can do whatever they want if they put their heads together. Way to go on all those peeps who are smart enough to donate a little off their cheque's every pay period.

Looked at the website for this! Looks like something I would like to get involved in when I get moved. What a great project and it is nice to see people trying to do something for these children instead of just complaining about high crime rates on NOLA.com all the time!

Baty and Shamarr met last night to discuss that. From my understanding, there will be guest artists to take over while Shamarr is out of town. Baty said that Shamarr will only be missing three Tuesdays, so it will be OK.:)

What a great place to volunteer. Can't think of anything I would rather do! I know he will enjoy.....and it would be hard not to appreciate the music afterwards.

I have decided to do my service hours with the Tulane Mobile Medical Clinic on the weekends after I move. But I think that I would rather be with your Son and listening to the music.

Hi everyone!
I am wondering if the Silence is Violence program involves kids or participants doing any of their own writing... or any program that is helping people find new ways.

I have to write a paper about violence and writing and am curious if there is any (documented) situation where writing is used to help kids cope/change/express themselves down there in NOLA.

Anyways if ya can think of anything, I'd love to know!
Thanks,
Katie

You may want to look at this site...all the books are written by Students. I have all the books, if you need to use/read them, I could put them in the mail to ya. May not be exactly what you are looking for, but all the books are written about the different neighborhoods and deal with all the issues they face including violence. Hope it will be of some help.

Fredrick Douglass had a nationally acclaimed writing program for years, but the weirdness of the new school system plan seems to have claimed another victim. Maybe you can get some information from the people who were involved in it last year.

I didn't, but it was the first time for my son working on his service hours. After a rough start, Rosebuddy said that he had a good time and is excited to go back again. He called me when he was done to tell me that he met someone who gave him a CD after he told the guy that his dad was a Threadhead. The guy told him that he "loved the Threadheads!". When Rosebuddy came home he tossed the CD to me............Paul Sanchez! When I told RB that Paul founded and then split from Cowboy Mouth, he was impressed and said he loved CM....who knew?;)

That's what we're hoping... not just teaching the notes, but teaching about how good life can be.

Hopefully in 2026 when we can finally get there for an extended time (albeit in walking frames) we will get to see the clinic in action. Oh man, wouldn't it be the koolist if kids at the clinic today are there teaching the kids of tomorrow.

Hey Dan,
things are kind of slow right now, to be expected with the economy and we don't have any output now, so not too problematic. The money that you surprised me with at fest and the $$ from the raffle went directly to SIV and should funded the last clinic and the next two sessions.
I'll post a total when I get home. :)

12-02-2008, 08:03 AM
Fest4Kidz has a current total of $6,637.86! Not too shabby. We did give Shamarr a check for his teaching last music clinic session. That's been our only output since last Fest. :)

I forgot (would have to look up) how much we spent last year, but the money goes pretty far. We received 18 free adult tickets from the Fest Foundation, which helped with chaperone tickets. The kidz tickets were only $5 each and we gave them F4K tee shirts, $50 each spending money for the fest. We paid each kid who played the patry $50. We also gave the clinic a check each session (to support the free meals for the kids) and also a check to Shamarr for teaching each session.

That's great that you want to help out, sassbox. if you've read this thread, you know ibjamn spearheads this endeavor. Folks contribute in different ways, the primary ways are monetary donations and contributing musical instruments. Threadheads (www.threadheads.org) hold a raffle each spring before fest to raise money for charitable organizations. In the past, those orgs have been New Orleans Musicians Clinic and Fest4kidz. These are memories but aren't far off: the first year we raised $6000, 07-$15000, 08-$30000. Finding folks who will contribute stuff to our raffle is a great way to help. You can see what was contributed last year when you go to the threadhead site but truth is we take just about anything. We had cds, show tickets, fest tickets, a golf bag, a disney trip, music poster, liquor, restaurant gift certificates and much more!

Has the $$$ goal been established for '09? If the trend continues, it looks like $60K should be this years goal?

When can we start sending in the goods?

Amy Winette

We're trying to nail down 501 status so donations are tax deductible -- it's in the works, just not quite done yet. We could start without it and send receipts once that's done. At this point, with the holidays and all, I'm thinking right after the new year we'll have Chris sticky a donations thread which will have a link to a downloadable donor form. In the meantime, of course, if folks want to start pledging items, feel free to email me at amy.wallace.potter@gmail.com Gonna be another great year I'm sure!!

Hi, Jenn, the Foundation announced the annual Community Outreach Program on the 9th. Do you think Fest4Kids will qualify for tickets again this year?

It was really fantastic that the Foundation so generously donated an allotment of tickets for the clinic participants to attend NOJ&HF in 2008.

BTW, when does the next music clinic begin?

Thank you for this wonderful thing you are doing for New Orleans' future musicians. Maybe one day, one of them will be an artist on Threadhead Records!:)

From Offbeat this week... I wonder if they would consider the kids' clinic.

In honor of James Booker, Baldwin Pianos will donate a piano used during the Booker Tribute to a deserving musician who needs a piano as a result of Hurricane Katrina. The musician will be announced at the Best of The Beat event on January 31.

THere is an old piano at the Sounda Cafe, albeit, an out-of-tune one. I think this would be better going to a musician who really neeeeeeds a piano. It's an expensive instrument. I'll check into it, though, thanks Oz!

I just got an email from Baty with SIV. Among other things, they have hired a program director, who will manage the music & writing clinics and work on PR. They are also looking for a larger, less distracted space for some of the classes, possibly for the more advanced students. These things were made possible by Threadhead donations to this wonderful endeavor. I did want to share a part of her email with ya'll (below). The spring music clinic begins March 10th!!

I was just updating our website yesterday and wondered whether to include the Fest4Kidz partnership for 2009--I did so, optimistically! But please let me know if indeed the Threadheads are interested in renewing the partnership this year. Clearly it was awesome for our kids last year, and has enabled the Clinics to continue. It's so great to see additional youth outreach efforts emerge around the city, and to see the ripple effect our efforts have helped to influence. I hope it gives all of the Threadheads tremendous satisfaction to know what an important part you've been of what is becoming a very popular approach to reaching young people in New Orleans-

Thanks and speak w you soon!

Can we get an update on what musical instruments the clinic might be in need of for this year and coming year?

Many of the kids may be progressing and could be in need of a more advanced model of a particular instrument - or there may be new instruments that they would like to explore.

Please let us know !!! Thanks !

Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs heal our communities from within

February 25, 2009

Hi, everyone--

In the wake of a Mardi Gras that was upliftingly festive, but sadly marred by violence, SilenceIsViolence and our community partners are launching spring peace efforts throughout our city. Over the next few weeks we will begin new series of Youth Writing and Music Clinics under the "SilenceIsViolence presents" program.

Tomorrow, we join with the V.I.P. Ladies Social Aide and Pleasure Club for a Peace Walk uptown. This will be the first of a series of City Walks coordinated by the social aid and pleasure clubs of New Orleans, in conjunction with the annual second-line parades of the clubs. We invite all who feel that community action is a crucial part of our public safety to join the V.I.P. Ladies on Thursday evening. The full route should take less than an hour and is listed below.

SHAMARR ALLEN AND FRIENDS
Announce the 2009 edition of the
SilenceIsViolence
MUSIC CLINICS

Spring Session now open:
Tuesdays Mar. 10—Apr. 28

5:30pm-7:30pm
Sound Cafe: 2700 Chartres Street

Clinics are open to young people ages 5-15 with an interest in instrumental and/or vocal performance. The clinics are free, with dinner & instruments provided. No musical experience required, and no prior registration necessary.

Each music session includes an instruction period, a dinner break, and an informal jam session, during which clinic participants have the opportunity to perform with the professionals. Experienced musicians, led by Music Director, trumpet virtuoso Shamarr Allen, teach fundamental techniques on a range of instruments. In addition, participants have the opportunity to take one subsidized private lesson per week with one of our professional music coaches.

All young New Orleanians with an interest in music, as well as parents and community supporters, are invited to attend our Youth Music clinics as participants or as audience members.

Learn an instrument, practice the instrument you already have, or just come enjoy the music!

Instruments and dinner provided.

Donations welcome to sustain our Clinics!

Thanks, Wanna! Chris had said right before fest that only threads about Fest could be stickies now.
As an update, Kerry is in town today & is donating a trombone. The Potters emailed me this week and the F4K portion of the raffle money is on it's way. A good portion of that money will be turned right around to SIV to support the funding of the clinics. My plan is to gather as many THs as possible for a small check presentation/photo op. :)
I'll get with Shamarr and try to see what we can do for the clinics on a wider basis and I was thinking about a F4K donation to the Satchmo Summer Jazz camp and hopefully, next summer, sposoring some of our clinic kids to go to that camp.

Sounds like a good plan.

Didn't know SIGGRAPH was in NOLA this year. It's the Annual Computer Graphics Convention. Huge International event ...... we'll have some friends there. Nice to see them team up with Basin Street. These people PARTY!!! A company I used to work for always sponsored parties here. One year we had open bar & a live band at the LA Zoo. You've not partied 'til you turn around and an Elephant is looking at you like you're crazy (and they're right!!).
