Mayor to deliver state of city address

Mike Conti Reporting
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin gives his annual state of the city address tonight at the National World War II Museum.

While the mayor is expected to outline the progress the city has made in the post-Katrina recovery, it's unclear if his vision of how the city has fared since the storm matches up with resident's opinions.

The common concern on the minds of most people we talked to at the Spanish Plaza had nothing to do with crime, blight or insurance.

"The population is down since Katrina," said one man. "I don't know if that helps or hurts things, but the economy probably hurts."

"It doesn't seem as busy now as it should be," said another man, noting the relative quiet of the once-bustling CBD.

"It's definitely still recovering," said another man. "It definitely needs a lot of work."

But in light of those concerns about the economy, most people we spoke to say they feel positive about the city and its future, even as concerns about crime continue to simmer.

"Somebody definitely needs to step it up there," said one man when asked if the city was doing enough to combat crime.

Tonight's State of the City address can be heard live on WWL AM, FM and wwl.com.

It will be interesting to hear what his plan for the city is. His "vision" has been blurred it seems.

Its hard to have a "vision" when you are blind in one eye and can't see out of the other.

he should have been giving these once a month since the beginning of last year...or even the end of 2005
something to keep the people connected with the government..and vica versa.

YYR, Nola, YYR. Not too late to see an Optometrist or should he be seeking an optimist at this point.

Nobody asked me, but I'll give a State of the City address.....
It sucks! We need a new mayor who will look after our best interests and not his. We need to hold the people who are holding back the redevelopment of the city accountable. We need an avenue where people can get their money from the insurance companies and proceed to come back and rebuild. We need the state and federal government to make good on the promises that they made twenty-three months ago. This is just a start, don't even get me started on crime, schools and other quality of life issues!
I should have run for mayor! I couldn't have done a worse job than this bonehead!
State of the City ....don't make me laugh!! The whole freakin' world knows our state....anyone who cares knows our state....just start to work and get the job done!!!!

It's hard to argue with Oyster's article:

"Recall Nagin, unelect Jordan and force Riley to resign "

and you lost your cane and killed your dog ......

i would guess his vision involves him making a crap load more money and gettin' the hell out when his term is done.

Was the opposing mayoral candidate really bad? Or was Ray the best option?Or were people scared of change during the crisis?

well alot of people ran in the primaries....i was supportive of Ron Foreman who
made the zoo and the aquarium the succeses they are...
but in the end it was Mitch Landrieux against Nagin.....for the life of me I
cant figure out how Nagin got elected.....But Mitch ran a very wimpy campaign,
never criticizing Nagin, almost kind of trying to stay friendly towards him....
ive been told that in new orleans politics you cant criticize an african american
candidate...not my words...just what ive been told...Mitch sure supported
that notion tho...even if you throw out what Nagin did post levee breaking,
and look at the state of the city before katrina, he should have never been
reelected...schools are some of the worst in the nation, terrible streets,
murder capital of the u.s........and things are still the same today..
the best thing that could be said about Nagin so far is theres no
charges of graft, corruption, etc....against him...
altho he doesnt shy away from making racist comments that hurt
the citys image..

IMHO Landrieux could have done much better...i doubt he could have done
worse....

My friend and NOLA hostess, Gloria worked for Mitch ('though she did vote for Nagin in his first campaign) and I went with her to Landrieu H.Q. last year just before the election and it was very interesting to speak with the volunteers there (many of whom were African-American) and why they were supporting Mitch over C. Ray . . . it seemed to me (a very concerned outsider) that he was BY FAR the better choice . . .

But apparently (from what Gloria told me) in the final televised debate just before the election, Nagin did a much better job than Mitch did . . . and as we all know, most voters only pay attention to what's fed them on T.V. and don't delve more deeply than that.

Also, I think a lot of folks just didn't want to change horses in mid-stream.

You had two factors at work aside from what you have mentioned.

1) The black voters felt like too much of the establishment was dissing Ray. The tv stations, the Picayune, the talk shows were all down on him. They felt pushed to being protective of him.

2) The Republicans did not in any way want Landrieu getting into the office. They were afraid once in, they could not get him out until he was term limited, and then he would be a shoo-in for Governor. So the Republicans backed Nagin.

LOL . . . Strange Bedfellows indeed! Maybe Nagin's new friendships explain some of his behavior (or non-behavior) since his re-election . . . hmmmmm.

Look for Da Mayor in your pocket to star in the Hollywood South blockbuster, "The Accidental Raycist", based on a screenplay written by jazzfest authority and accidental anti-semite Roger Hahn and starring Arthur Davis as his royal baldness. During three nights of free previews at the Superdome, everyone admitted will be given a complementary pint of Chocolate City Ice Cream.

roflmao! I love that!!! :)

I was shocked too that Nagin was re-elected after being such a weasel first-term. I agree that fear was number one and that people were afraid that things would get worse by changing mayors and slow things more. I also think that there's been so much fear of losing the black population in New Orleans that outing the black mayor would further alienate them. I think the fears were valid but man, no one could be worse at this then Nagin....he's a friggin joke....invisible man....pfffft! I don't trust a word he says and it makes me sick to hear him talk now....just like W.

Hey Guys

I found this tid bit on the TP website. They asked folks what their speech would have said..so I found this jewel:

My State of the City Address:

My fellow New Orleanians, I really don't have much to talk about tonight, except to expound on the injustice of the universe having dumped this crisis into my lap. I didn't ask for this. I wanted a nice break from the corporate life . . . something that would get me cameo shots in movies, great meals, and a street named after me somewhere. Instead, I'm the Captain of the Titanic. Life just isn't fair.

I'd LIKE to claim credit for the city not being totally dead, but to be honest, hard-working, stubborn, refuse-to-say-die common folk have done it all, without help from any level of government, including the mayor's office. Anyone waiting for help or leadership from me to get back to New Orleans should kiss that dream goodbye. There's no Tooth Fairy, no Santa Claus, and no Road Home.

Oh, sure, if we had maybe that Gen. Honore guy in charge, he would be on Bush and Blanco like a pit bull on Angel Dust. There would have been a press conference every day, on the front lawn of the governor's mansion and the White House, and he'd have darn well requisitioned enough vee-hicles to transport everyone home, and build barracks and TAKE CARE OF HIS PEOPLE. I PITY THE FOOL WHO STOOD IN HIS WAY.

But you got me.

Whine. Whine. Carp about the cold, cruel universe. Complain about the media. Rail at the feds. Shriek at Baton Rouge.

Sure, I know, a leader shouldn't blame. A leader takes charge when others fail.

Just like hard-core, never-say-die New Orleanians take charge of their own destinies when their "leaders" fail.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda . ..

I've got three years left. I can leave a legacy, or I can be the guy who posed. Who knows which Ray will show up?

Don't count on me . . . save yourselves.

That is a riot, Wynn...once again right on time with da humor.

I remember that big business backed Nagin and he played to them again. A normally conservative tack and a sellout to the democratic philosophys but hey if gets the vote, a good one politically, I guess.

Fear of the unknown amidst change has a great deal of influence on voting. The devil you know as opposed to the devil you don't.

My question is where is the recall or impeachment if he is so incompetent? I personally think that the question you have to ask yourself is, based on the failure of state and federal involvement (and those who tell me that NOLA received x amount of federal money...it is a drop in the bucket to the foreign aid we gave countries like Brazil and Lebanon in one fell swoop) could anyone get the job done? Is it inaction by the mayor specifically or the whole system in general?
Related to that, what is the status of the suit the governor (who is less worth her paycheck than most politicians I know IMHO) filed against the Feds to try and recover oil revenues. That money alone would be a HUGE help in not only NOLA's recovery but its future operations.

Suit dropped, I believe, when the Domenici-Landrieu Gulf Coast Energy Plan (http://landrieu.senate.gov/~landrieu/releases/06/2006C20B18.html) passed both houses and then was signed by the President. The suit was really a tactic for putting pressure on the legislators.
