View Full Version : Hard Lessons Learned at Jazz Fest

I guess that I am just too trusting of an individual. We have shown at JF for twenty six years now and we have never had more than a few dollars worth of bad credit cards. This year we got over $700 worth!!!!!  We have tried to track down these individuals, but the addresses that we got from them are wrong/bogus. I have tried to redeposit the charges every week to see if it was a lack of funds problem---NOT!
I broke down and bought a new state of the art CC machine that will run the card instantly, so it won't happen again but I am so pissed that we let this happen....
Some people really suck!! We work hard to make our art and to steal it from me .....aaaarrrrrggggghhhh. I hope the karma that is transferred with their crime comes back to them in spades!!! Maybe one will drop his stolen Shoulder vase on his foot and break it and his foot! Where's my freakin' voodoo doll!!!!!
Anyone have any other suggestions to legally get my money back before I call Scoop and get the "Joisey" boys on it???

I've got no suggestions for you, RT. But I want you to know that this really pisses me off, as well. A thief is one of the lowest forms lowlife.
I regret that this happen to you.

Oh man, that SUCKS Rosetree! You might call a collection agnecy to see how much they would charge to try to collect the debt -- that's probably the only cost effective option, hiring an attorney you'll have paid them more than you're owed before they even get the demand letter out and the chances of colleciting from a deadbeat are slim anyway -- it's a good money after bad kind of situation :(

People aren't going to give up their beer money!!!
The system that I bought will give me instant verification, and if not, I WILL get ID for anything that I am hesitant about.
At the Fest, everything is fast and furious, trying to get things sold and people on their way back for food and music. We are just going to have to slow down a little and verify everything.
What sucks is that my trust is now shaken, and I don't like feeling this way.....:(
Amy, I don't think that collections will do this with the info that I have....I know that they charge 1/3 of what is collected.
Amy Winette
05-28-2007, 01:05 PM
I see, you didn't get an address or anything to track these folks? Very very crummy :( It would be hard to carry enough cash to buy a lot of your beautiful pieces! The instant verification should protect you in the future, sorry you have to do that, but sadly those are the times we live in, eh?

Yes, I did get an address with every CC purchase, but I had no way of knowing that they were bogus!! Now I will cross check addresses with a driver's license.. It just makes me look like I don't trust the customer ( I guess I lost some of that trust)

Nah, I think everybody expects to have their ID checked. I actually appreciate the rare occasions when someone checks my signature with the signature on my driver's license, you're also protecting the customers from credit card theft.

I guess unless they bought something big, that required shipping, and waiting to ship until the charge clears, you've got not way of knowing... that really sucks. It's just outright stealing... I wonder how many and what other vendors this happened with... maybe you ought to consider contacting the other vendors and sharing this info. If it's happened to enough of you, and the dollar amounts add up to be pretty high, maybe you can all work together to go after these thieves.
Once, in college, someone stole some of my artwork that had been in a student display, it made me so sick. I don't think these sort of people ever even consider how you think of your work as a part of you, they are heartless, greedy, selfish b*astards who only think of getting what they want with totally no regard to anyone else and should suffer the consequences of their actions.

Next year, ask one of us to help out, we'll do that part at least, cross checking id, driviers licences photo ID, signatures and the credit cards or soemthing if you need us. Hey, friends do that sort of thing for friends... or if Brenda is doing that, show someone how you want things bagged up, so she's free to do that.

"my" (hubby's) beautiful purchases arrived last week, safe and intact. He hid my Christmas gift somewhere and let me see all the fan pulls that we bought for everyone else. Thanks for sending along all the cards, too... so I can add those to the gift bags with the pulls! I know everyone is going to go gaga over those. John asked me if I wanted to see the vase, and I said no... because I forgot which one I picked out of the two Brenda showed me. Surprise is a good thing, sometimes.
I picked up a postcard that came to the library about a show at Wheaton Arts. I didn't know if it was to late for you or not... but maybe you'll want to keep an eye on their website... http://www.wheatonarts.org The post card says something about registration for a weekend (june 23 & 24th) for marble weekend and features a Fri evening demo by Gateston Recko and a Sat evening flame off (what's that?) at the Carlisle School of Glass Art.
What is the credit card company telling you, why the transaction is not being honored? Was the card stolen? Fake? Either of those, you're likely SOL. Over-limit? Just not matching to the address? Either of those, they ought to help you resolve it, I'd think.

The three that I can fight are "authorization declined". My provider was the one who said to try and charge them each week to see if they are just overdrawn. He also said to try and put in smaller amounts to see if that goes through---nope, and nope! We sent letters (registered) to the addresses given, and those came back as undeliverable. I am going to get my service provider to contact the issueing bank and see what can be done to these bastids. I'm not stopping yet....they stole my freakin' work, and they are going to pay for it!

Mark, in the many years Mrs. AtPontchartrain had a booth there, before the cellphone revolution, we never had a bounced check or bad cc. It's truly sad you can't be as trusting anymore. Up at the Rosen show in Philadelphia, Mrs. AtP was actually pickpocketed in the convention center!! Or pickpursed, technically. And that's a first for her.

I hear ya AtP!! I showed at many a show with your Mrs., and we were all a lot more trusting back then...:( Times change......
I can't believe that the Mrs got pick pursed at the show! Was it in the Convention Center, or on the street, or in the Market?

Right in the convention center, she believes, distracting her at a booth with some jostling from one side while someone else slipped a couple of fingers into her purse from the other side, grabbing a few hundred in cash, no credit cards. They told her at security that they'd had a number of reports. If they were good enough to do that in the convention center, imaging what their haul could be in the Reading Terminal Market!!

Mark, I am truly saddened and sick to my stomach that this has happened to you. I am so angry that people feel like it's ok to take other people's stuff. They not only took your art, but they took your trust and that's almost worse. I have said for years that Jazz Fest was the safest city on earth because who would buy a ticket to rip somebody off? It appears I was wrong. :( So sorry, and like mamaroux said, if there is anyway we can help, let us know!

I'd be more than happy and honored to help you and Brenda out at Jazzfest next year - I have 20+ years in retail and would be pleased to run the credit cards for you and prepare receipts/shipping info - while you get the fingerprints, retina scan and first-born from the customers ;)
Seriously, I'd be happy to help y'all out with some of the retail grunt work - so you can focus on the sales and schmoozing (the important stuff)! :)

Yes, bought and taken. I thought the same thing ---we could track the package. Unfortunately, they took the item and gave me a false address in my book. I haven't gotten NOPD involved yet, I'm talking to my CC carrier tomorrow to see where to go next.

Does your merchant bank offer any fraud protection? Also, if you haven't already, contact Visa, Amex, etc. If this is part of Identity Theft or some crime ring they are dealing with, you might be able to put a claim in to re-coup something. It's not as far fetched as it sounds.
Some people really suck - but they will get what they deserve.

Somehow, it just seems to be an even lower form of behavior when what you are ripping off is art. Most artists, like musicians, barely scrape by as it is. It's only a very very few who make it, compared to all of the other journeymen/women out there.
When someone rips off a big box store, it's wrong, but not as bad. The artist has given the world a gift of beauty, and they rip it off. Sheesh.

It doesn't work that way...fraud protection works for the consumer, not the seller. CC companies work to get the trust and business of the customers. If you contest a charge, we have to jump through the hoops to prove it. I will file a report w/ VISA if that is the next step.

I'm always amazed that the CC companies don't seem to bear any responsibility for the fraud.

no, as a cc user, i prefer that my id is checked....i feel that is also protecting me from cc theft. if the customer is uneasy about verifying who he/she is, then that would make me, the seller, concerned.

The main one would be a red Shoulder Vase. But the problem is that I make these for my "line" so there are other similar ones out there. I think Glinda has one!;) :D I don't know how we culd differentiate one from the other. If they were numbered like a print I could, but they are not.

RT - bad things happen to good people - but don't let it make you less trusting. You'll just work smarter. There was so much of this kind of behavior going on this year....all over. I saw people trying to sell previously scanned tickets - and I know that other merchants ran into the same problem !

I did however hear from the one that I would have bet was stolen! It was from Jamaica and they emailed me today and will check with their company to see why it won't go through!:) The others are still deadbeats with false addresses....bastids!

Man, I am truly saddened to learn of your misfortune. How low can people go? I think that you should certainly contact the NOPD, and possibly the feds. I don't know if identity theft is a federal crime, but if the phony ID is over state lines I would think federal laws apply. I would certainly contact the fest organizers to inform them of these events and attempt to contact other exhibitors to see if the same low-lifes pulled this on other folks, which I expect did happen. If there are other victims of the same suckwads, you may get more of a response from the authorities. Good luck, RT.

It's terrible how this kind of thing destroys your trust in your customers. I had my wallet stolen, from inside my purse, which was behind the counter of my store. It made me look at my customers differently from then on.
But I was lucky; the thief used my credit card at a local store, but also at a 7-11. And they have video cameras at the 7-11, so she did eventually get caught. Were the cards stolen, or just had the numbers altered or over their limit? You should definately file charges with the police if they were stolen or altered. Maybe you will be lucky, too, and the card was also used somewhere where they videotaped. But you must keep bothering the police; don't let it go. My wallet was stolen in September, and the woman was ID'd a couple of weeks later. But she didn't get charged until April; and that was only because I kept calling. (If the victim of the credit card theft is stubborn like me, that will help)
And keep trying to put through the ones that were "authorization declined". I've had similar situation happen to me, and it took almost two months, but eventually did go through!
And OrleanNJ's comment about people trying to resell scanned tickets: I could see that being a big problem. Can't the ticket takers rip them in half after they scan them? Please, FESTY DAVE can you suggest this to the powers that be? It shoudl only take an extra second to do, but it will bring you much goodwill. Someone who buys a ticket, and then is told that it is used and won't be honored will not be back again for Fest. Plus, we resold our extra tickets for face value at the bus stop after the cancelled day a few years ago. No one would buy them in that situation now, so if there is a cancelled day, you will have to refund everyone's ticket money! What a hassle!

I'd guess that's exactly why they don't rip or keep the tickets, so that the threat of already-used tickets quashes the resale market. In the Fests mind, every resold ticket is one more ticket that won't be bought at the box office.
And, btw, the last time there was a cancelled day, the Fest did not offer refunds. If you resold for face, you were lucky; with all the extras that were available, I saw most sales that weekend going for about half that much.

wow RT sorry to hear about your losses, that really bites the bullet! I'm a victim on cc theft and fortunately I was the consumer so my cc card company stood by me & reversed all charges made. The funny thing is that my cc card was never physically stolen from me ... they somehow generated a bogus card with my acct # on it and went shopping in an Orlando mall & charged up thousands of $$$ my cc card company called me to see if it was me making the purchases, they felt they looked fradulent. They never caught the vixen who went shopping on my cc ... she stopped at "Coach", "BCBG" etc etc .... whatevah
But I would like to try to offset some of that cc theft too by stopping in at your website for a little retail therapy:D

It has not been easy, but I'm 41 and have gotten thru life without them. They are EVIL. I pay cash or I go without.
