I'm gathering info for my boss who, along with her husband, is making hr first trip down to NOLA for VF. She's staying in the Quarter and will have no car. I've never done VF so I'm not sure of the differences between what I know about JF and what is done for VF.

I see there is a shuttle from the Marriott to City Park. Does anyone know how much it costs? Will the cabs be on a "Special Event" flat rate? Is the Canal St. Streetcar a viable option?

Anybody have any good advice/info I can pass on? (I'm desperately hoping that she'll "get it" so I'll have someone else to obsess with at work. Everybody else just smiles politely...)

I'm sure the cabs will be on "special event" rates. Remember that the fare is the greater of the meter or the special event rate, so if she's solo and doesn't find someone to share with, she'll be paying the meter.

Thanks, Swag. I thought they probably would but wasn't sure. I'll pass on the info.

Sue, here's the website/travel info, apparently there are some shuttles:
http://voodoomusicfest.com/2006/travel/

• From The Boot (Freret St. & Broadway)
• From The Marriot dowtown (555 Canal St.)
• The shuttles will begin 30 minutes before gates open and run every hour on the 1/2 hour.
• The last shuttle leaving Voodoo will be 30 minutes after gates close.
• From Baton Rouge - pickup location Fred's Bar - departs at 10am returns 20 min. after last act on Sat. & Sun. - Must pre-purchase by calling 1-800-366-8882

Street Cars
#27 - Louisiana, #42 - Canal Bus, #47-48 - Canal Streetcar, #91 - Jackson-Esplanade (Click here for specific schedule and route information).

Taxi
• United Cabs - (504) 522-9771
• Checker Cab Company - (504) 525-3311
• Dixieland Taxi Service - (504) 258-5882

Lots of good info on that site!

Thanks, Jenn. I had found the site but wasn't sure about those few things. Like how close to the festival site does the streetcar drop off?

This year, the voodoo fest is in the front of the park, mostly in front of the Art museum. So, the streetcar lets you off 30 paces from the first tent. :)
We have been watching tents go up all week for the fest.

Sue, there is a big write-up and pull out section in this week's Gambit. You should be able to view some of this starting tomorrow on their site, bestofneworleans.com. If you buy a weekend pass or a VIP pass you can go in and out as you like. I purchased weekend passes in May, but Ticketmaster says my tickets have yet to be printed! There will be many local musicians at the fest this year, including Irma Thomas and Jon Cleary's first show in town since March. I would love to gussy up my posts, but I have not figured out all of the hieroglyphics yet.

Thanks! I'll check the site tomorrow.

I suspect they will just buy a ticket "at the door". They'll only be able to go on Saturday since their flight leaves early on Sunday.

I told her the FIRST thing she needs to know about visiting NOLA is that you NEVER make your return flight out early on Sunday. http://www.nojazzfest.com/chat/images/icons/icon14.gif

Any T-heads going to Voodoo? I plan to check it out for the first time this year since they've included more New Orleans local acts. Plus it is walking distance from the house! Weather is supposed to be great this weekend too.

According to today's Lagniappe, the Meters are supposed to join RHCP to close out the show tomorrow after they finish their set. I am looking forward to Broken Social Scene and Secret Machines again, but the idea that the Preservation Hall Band and Wardell Quezerge will be there as well is really cool. The weather should be perfect for both days, 72 tomorrow and 75 Sunday, sunny and dry. If I get there Sunday, Ozomatli is on top of my list. This is going to be more like jazzfest than it used to and we are bringing our 12 y/o as well. He is really pumped! I'd love to go see Anders tonight, but the chores must get done...

Hey yall....Voodoo was very cool. My son Connor was dying to go meet his friends and see Red Hot Chili Peppers. I actually didn't feel much like going but didn't want him there alone. it was a gorgeous day! Met Chicago Mike by the WWOZ stage and we had a couple of beers together before Trombone Shorty came on w/ his band. Mike was waiting for someone else so I saw Shorty's group with a few other friends and he was a lot of fun....he got the crowd into it. His band is really good. Then Mike and I had another beer when some rappers came on w/ Shorty. We left Mike again and wandered off for food (yuck) and saw Drive By Truckers. They were good too. Later on, the Original Meters closed out the OZ stage, ending around 8:30 or so I guess. What was funny was that I spend all freaking day tiptoeing around sloppy spots (it had rained all day the day before), but once it got dark you couldn't see a damn thing! You'd be walking along and then just be ankle deep. It was so freaking nasty and my feetses were gross! Hooked back up w/ Mike at Meters and it was a riot cause we're walking along having a conversation and in the middle of a sentence he'd yell, 'AW FUCK!! Oh, sorry." It happened over and over and it was too damn funny. The slop would catch you by surprise. It was just so dark out there. Anyway, once Meters ended, we wandered over to catch the rest of the Chili Peppers who were awesome. Connor was texting me and having a blast way up front with people body surfing above him. (causing maternal stress but I tried to ignore it.) Chili Peppers finally ended and come out for an encore joined by The Meters!! Mike and I were loving it! It was really really cool. They jammed together a long while and it was just cool to watch them play off of each other. Peppers did another encore alone and closed out the day around 10:30.

Overall...gorgeous day.....good crowd, younger but friendly.....bad food.....no chairs at all.....excellent music!! It's no Jazzfest but I'd go again for the right music for sure.

Good time hanging with ya Chicago Mike!

damn, that sounds like a great day! The dirty feet story cracks me up! My feet look like that at the end of every night during JF lol....can't dance in shoes so it's bare feet all the time :) So glad you and Mike hooked up too Amy. He still in for SF weekend? BTW, I hear ya on the body surfing thing. I got a text from Sam who was at a punk festival in Detroit this summer telling me she surfed a few times. Almost gave me a heart attack!!! lol

Amyloves...
10-30-2006, 09:34 AM
I sent Connor a text message telling him not to surf. So later he's talking about how cool it all was etc. and says, "yeah, but I didn't surf cause people's shoes were falling off and I didn't wanna lose my flip flops." I was like, "um, did ya get the text message?" He says, "Oh yeah.....AND cause you told me not to."

Jackass!

The best Voodoo fest ever, I think. Better location, much more scenic and the gate was right where the streetcar stops at Beauregard Circle. It would have been perfect except for the deluge Friday AM, but most of the field was dry by Sat. Heard a couple of tunes by Imagination Movers, Amanda Shaw's set, a tune by Ernie Vincent in the Preservation Hall tent (max. capacity 200 peeps), a terrific show by Broken Social Scene, bits and pieces of Brazilian Girls, Troy Andrews, Kinky, Drive-By Truckers and Yuerba Buenas set waiting for the Meters. Finally got Logan out of the Playstation 3 promo lounge to hear the Meters show, which was simulcast on 'OZ, along with everything else on that stage both days. They were great and the sound echoing off Bayou St. John was perfect.

We left Ms. windowman home on Sunday and arrived in time to catch Morning 40 and Logan wanted to see My Chemical Romance, who put on an entertaining show. He got too far into the crowd and had to escape to prevent becoming a surfer! I got to watch him sing along with the band doing their closer, "Helena" (?). MCR is one strange group, to me. The lead singer talked about how happy he was to be in N.O. and how the city was recovering and how proud we should be. Then he introduces a song with N.O. in mind, called "Cancer", a ballad by someone who is dying...?? Anyway, having escaped the inner circle in front of the Voodoo stage, it was back to PS3 for the 12 y/o. This freed me up to wander about. Ninety seconds of Juvenile convinced me he was named correctly, so I headed back to Pres. Hall to hear the end of Jon Cleary and wait for Irma Thomas. Irma sounded incredible! Most of the crowd was under 35, so it was good to see a younger audience for her. I wish that tent were larger, but the sound was good even though it was in between two large stages. The biggest problem with the new site is that it is too small for six stages, although I heard today that there is already talk of expansion for next year.

I saw the beginning of the Flaming Lips' show, very theatrical with lights and giant balloons and confetti. The crowd was huge and seemed to love the show. I am not familiar with their songs so no knowing the lyrics, I couldn't "get it" but I was definitely one of the few. I waited for Ozomatli, who blew me away at Jazzfest last year, but they started 45 minutes late and I had to bring the boy home at a decent hour, so I heard the opener and some of the set on the way home.

This Voodoo fest was different than the pre-K versions. Obviously, there was a concerted effort to book a lot of local music which gave it more of a jazzfest vibe. There were no body painting (Damn!) or piercing tents, and there were more booths promoting music and political organizations and fewer selling pipes and bongs. It still has a counter-culture edge to it, just not as blatant. The food still sucks, for the most part. They did have a food booth by the Galley doing shrimp po-boys and crab cakes with crawfish sauce, and if you looked hard enough, there was the same carribean fish and jamaican chicken from jazzfest in the craft area. The show does go on after dark at Voodoo, and at that point it has its own vibe, different from jazzfest. I don't think that would ever happen at jazzfest, but there is one thing that the Voodoo fest does that I wish Jazzfest would consider: Ban chairs.

Voodoofest gave out info on dowloading shows from this year and earlier years, supposedly. It was not working earlier this evening, but if anyone is curious the URL is:

That sounds just great Windowman....I'm thinking this is where my kid will head next year if she wants to make another trip to Nola (which I assume she will!). I've been following alot of the write-ups about Voodoo and it doesn't seem to be as underground as in the past. Did it feel safer when it was dark? Sounds like your boy had a good time too :)

I agree with Windowman's review. Additional thoughts: Amanda Shaw's set was a bit edgier (and better) than I remembered from prior shows, more rock oriented and less cajun although still definitely influenced by the cajun fiddle sound. Troy Andrews and Orleans Avenue can definitely rock the house. Ernie Vincent is still a master of R&B. New Orleans is lucky to be represented by The Preservation Hall Jazz Band in its world-wide travels. The Brazilian Girls was a nice surprise, a great sounding group. It had been way too long since I had heard Jon Cleary - hopefully his absence from Jazz Fest 2006 will not be repeated next year. Irma Thomas continues to be one of my favorite New Orleans voices. Her voice is so strong in a small venue setting (like the Lion's Den and like the tent she played in on Sunday) - it loses something on the huge stages at Jazz Fest. Comments I heard suggested the food was a big improvement over prior Voodoo fests, and I was pleasantly surprised to find meat pies, pulled pork sandwiches and crab cakes with crawfish sauce. Finally, I'm afraid I'm on the other side of the chair debate - my lower back is screaming this week because I was on my feet so much over the weekend. I think a "chair zone" behind or to the side of the main stage areas wouldn't bother anybody and the people who want to stand can get right up front and do their thing. I am, however, against chair fencing to block off areas to those wanting to pass through, especially near the stage.

Overall, I was very happy the Voodoo organizers seem to be making a concerted effort to include more local names in the lineup, which can only help to expand their audience and improve the festival, in my opinion. As Windowman said, they need more room for the number of stages, to cut back on the sound bleed from one stage to the next.

On to Swampfest this weekend!

Since I really don't know much about the area around City Park, I would like to stay within walking distance but have some charm and not just homes and such. I love Esplanade Street.

Yes I am up to a festival that looks big and hip. I do love the lineups for the following weekend but VooDoo, Halloween, hubbies b-day, and the day we married is too much to pass up. We came for Jazzfest to Celebrate our 25 year of the day we met...so this would be the Wedding celebration.

By looking at the website it does look crowded. What is the mix of folk? It is more open than JazzFest, like in and outs, what you can bring in and such?

Again thanks for the thoughtful note and any guidance is welcome.

I'm pretty sure there are no accomodations within walking distance; certainly no hotels. There may be a B&B, but it's pretty well hidden. David walks our dog in City Park every day & we've never noticed on, although I do think I've heard of a B&B further down Esplanade, but that was before the thing.
I'll poke around for ya.

It was mainly a kids festival, very young crowd. But in 2005 they added a "local" stage and had brass bands, Kermit, etc, which opened up a whole new crowd dynamic. Windowman & AmyLoves could tell you more about the crowd last year.

Belle you sound like you're down for Voodoo. Check out last year's line-up...there's def something for everyone... but it does lean towards newer music & there's plenty of local acts. I mean last year the oldest band was Duran Duran??? A nice mix of folk, rules tend to be similiar to that of jazz fest. Not alot of chairs though. The distance would be similiar to that of Jazz Fest, though I'm sure others could advise on hotel accomadations???

Last year was my first voodoo and I am so not missing this year. Yes a muchly younger crowd and a very different vibe than Jfest but the WWOZ sponsored stage was exclusively local and where I oh most of the TH's I ran into in attendance hung out with the occassional forays to the opposite stage to see the other more hip acts. Like a college fall fest with a little old school thrown in.
Decided to road trip it from CT but currently looking for affordable accomodations for 6. Any ideas very welcome!!

This is where we stayed for JF and it was great. Just off Esplanade, by Port of Call. They have all different sized units and about $50 each a night (during fest) with full kitchen etc....hot tub in the courtyard, security gate and the landlady is really nice. Not huge places as they're old cottages but cute. We stayed in the Mardi Gras suite and had 6 peeps at one time......2 bedrooms and then a loft with just a flat bed for crashing. The place was small but it worked...

The closer you are to Esplanade and to Carrollton, the better.

There are several restaurants on Esplanade nearby. Cafe Degas (French - excellent), Lola's (Spanish), there is also a Japanese place next door to Cafe Degas and a pizza/Italian place where Gabrielle used to be (and that I cannot remember the name of) across Esplanade from Lola's. Liuzza's by the Track is on Lopez near the entrance to Jazz Fest. A bit further down Esplanade (toward Broad) is a CC's coffee. And the Fair Grinds Coffee House is on Ponce de Leon just behind Cafe Degas.

The closer you are to Orleans and Broad, the less you'll want to walk around at night...

Thank you so much for your time. This house is right in the middle of the streets. The folks are professionals who have lived in New Orleans since 95. A very old restored home. He is a photographer for the TP. Can't wait to meet them. Thanks again. Heck being near Liuzza's is a big bonus and walking home from VooDoo will be great.

They feel very safe but since they work lots (she is a chemical engineer currently in Malaysia) (he is a Times photographer) they don't walk much at night. They do have a list of walkable dinner venues but again we will be at VooDoo till late so it might not matter. We are more interested in lunch as they provide breakfast, with them or saved if we sleep in.

I can't wait to meet them and enjoy a B&B. First time for us. The sharing of personal space seems strange but I want to be close to the Park as hubby still has issues with his ankle and we didn't like the "finding a ride" after the event. Spoiled I guess?

You did real good, Belle. Its a real easy and short walk to VooDoo from there, and on that side of Bayou St. John you should really have no trouble day or night. Plus you are close to a couple of restaurants on Carrollton in addition to the ones mentioned on and near Esplanade.

The trout Bacquet at the fest this year was delicious, I don't know what's wrong with the restaurant. This last time we went, the fried chicken (which he is known for) was tiny pieces and sitting under a heat lamp for a long time, red beans out of a can. They have a steam table with the chicken & sides on it & the waiter serves your plate from that. Not too good.

The price to get in the fest walking in last year was $60, and I cannot believe that it will be any lower this year. If you are planning on going more than one day, I would go ahead and get the pass as it allows you to go in and out.

I have heard that the festival site will be expanded to the northwest side of the museum to accomadate one of the stages that was squeezed into last year's layout. The daily lineups are supposed to be announced in September and I expect that single day tix will go on sale then.

Last year there was a very small stage inside a tent sponsored by Preservation Hall - it was frequently very packed inside, with more people lingering outside during the sets. For some reason they had Irma Thomas singing in there and it was jammed. The other "local" music stage was never very crowded that I recall. There was plenty of room to get right up front for Trombone Shorty last year, for example...

Hi Bartley,

Three day tickets went on sale June 29th. The only information I can give you about one day tickets is that they will go on sale if there are any available after the three day ticket sale period. I would suggest that you purchase a three day ticket as to avoid any disappointment in the case that one day tickets do not go on sale.

So I may not be able to attend unless I buy the 3-day pass? Please. I'm not sure I like that business decision by them very much. If I ran a festival or any business and someone wanted to pay me for a ticket or my product, I would not stop them.
There'll be single day passes but not until the schedule comes out....in late September..... I guess they just want to maximize their tickets sales right now.....

It seems like that sort of limits the people who can only afford a single day. The email said no single day passes if it sells out so no guarantees on that.

I can afford all 3 days, just not sure I want to go all 3 days. I'm sure there are many who can only afford one day though which sucks for them.

I might have to go back and change that order....

I just tried... and tickets are not available at that $30.00 rate???? Still just passes. Don't know why it's there. As I previously posted... we paid about $40.00 for single day ahead of time when they went on sale last year...

I am not sure what the "friends & family" tickets pertain to, but I tried to purchase two and the site won't allow it to go through. The pass does allow you to go in and out, but the single day tickets never have before.

Yeah Mr. Chicago still calls me ALF from the old board days (amylovesthefest). He's got me in his phone as Alf too.

I sure do hope a lot of that Saturday lineup is in the afternoon cause I am playing in a softball tournament earlier. It's my company tournament and it gets scheduled around LSU games so that's the day unfortunately. Guess I'll just need to make sure we're knocked out early! Looking forward to Voodoo...I love October weather here.

Thanks for the warm welcome. It took awhile but we found a place to stay and locked in our flights yesterday. Now we need to decide on renting a car. We rented one in April for JF, but we were there for an extra few days and used it for non-fest travel. Does anyone know if there will be bus transportation from the river or Canal St similar to JF?

Then again, there will be four of us this time. It might be worth it to pay for parking rather than bus transportation for four. Thoughts?

One other issue with same child ....Some of you know our son is in a garage band and just won the areas "Battle of the Band" contest so he has been invited to play two gigs that weekend too. So we will see. Maybe we will leave him the suburban and take his truck to the airport so it might work.

Pretty cool though...one of the gigs is for a band that was on this summers Vans Warped Tour wants them to open for a private party. Pretty cool stuff.

I will let you know. Sounds like the Saturday, Sunday, Monday thing night be a possibility. I am always up for it but its pretty busy during the week here with work and sports.

Anyhow, I just wanted to put in my plug for a couple of acts that I don't see getting any attention in this thread: Morning 40 Federation and Ratty Scurvics. They both were playing at One Eyed Jacks this past New Years Eve (I was on my way from Boston to LA to attend the Rose Bowl, so I detoured to NOLA, pulled an all-nighter, and then slept on the flights to LA). The combination of these two, together with a fair bit of Bombay Sapphire, was like living a David Lynch movie. I highly recommend it!

Since when did Microsoft have a freakin' patent on all the software you might ever want to use? Amy, can you email it to me? Thx!

I'm thinkin but I wanted Tips on Friday night for Ivan and then Rock n Bowl Sat. for Bonerama....BUT they want BOURBON ST. and I have mostly newbies with me......I may skip Ivan at Tips and do Bourbon the first night and then music clubs the next two...gotta see which way it shapes up....Bourbon and Frenchmen would likely be done in the same night..easy for me to sneak away and find me later :)

Aaaaaaaaaaand she's off!

I had a problem with Adobe reader a couple of months back and stopped using it. I am using Foxit reader and it works very well and uses much less memory to run. Check it out at http://www.foxitsoftware.com/

frustrating FOMS huh? We actually talked about changing our flights to an earlier one so we don't have to miss 1/2 of Friday.....man I wish I knew it was starting that early! People on the forum were telling me gates would be opening late afternoon. That just sucks :(

Voodoo just released the entire schedule on its website. Way at the bottom and tiny, there's a pdf option for printing.

Weekend passes are now $115 and the daily ones are $40 right now, but I'm sure they'll be higher by Monday.

http://voodoomusicfest.com/2007/experience_schedule/

Wow... just got my first look. Though I had an idea who was playing what days - 5 stages?!?! This looks awesome! Friday is looking like my favorite so far.

I know,it's kinda nutty huh? We're skipping the Pumpkins for the Social Club too and then will probably leave straight to Rock n Bowl for some Bones.....or maybe we'll have time for a quick change, doubt it though.....

After VooDoo Fest.

These guys are out there.

Normally no cover at Le Bon Temps Roule, but every now and then they will charge a $5.00 cover. (never more than $5.00)

Le Bon Temps Roule is a great place to see live music.

Did I already say this here? Well, if I did, here comes a repeat. Just saw Mike Dillon's go go jungle in Fayetteville in north arkansas this weekend and they are some wild and crazy dudes. Loved it. Also saw 3/4 of the funky meters because PBS was there too! It was totally groovy, funky shit. And then there was Steve Kimock and friends, which included Porter on bass, Melvin Seals on keys, Jeff Sipes on drums, Steve Pryor on guitar and vocals and Donna Jean on vocals. Sweet set.

McGregor, the onsale is at 10AM central. The show is posted on the site now and if you don't want to wait until Saturday, just become a "member" (register) and you will probably be able to buy them ahead of time. I think that you are okay either way.

Lisa, if you are looking for shows on Halloween, Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde is doing a solo acoustic show at the Parish and New Pornographers headline a triple-header downstairs at HOB. You could probably do both shows if you wanted.
