View Full Version : The NOLA Funk Torch Has Been Passed

For those who didn't see Dumptsafunk last night, the torch has been passed. Ivan Neville and the boys brought down the house at Tips. It was nice with Porter, Art, and Leo. But it was Dumptsafunk's night (And I idolize the Meters). I believe they played mostly new material and few covers. Ian has gotten his chops, and Nick Daniels was great as always. The second set was a monster, a classic, a night not to be missed. Ivan had a grin from ear to ear, knowing his band was locked in.

New Orleans funk is in good hands, indeed.

Amen! I agree. DumpsterFunk are Funkier than thou! They wer the highlight of our fest 3 years ago.

Saw 'em at Howlin' Wolf 1st weekend. Ian is getting better at guitar and the two guys on bass/guitar were KILLING it. Ivan sounded better than I'd heard him before, too.

When you throw in Trombone Shorty's band and the like, I think funk lovers are well stocked for years to come.

BTW, if anyone needs an enticement to try the Rochester Jazz Fest (http://www.rochesterjazz.com/)here in June, happy hour the day before the official festival begins (June 7th) includes a free outdoor "Party in the Park" concert with Ivan and Dumpstaphunk.

(And later that week we get Bonerama for four shows over two days)

For those who didn't see Dumptsafunk last night, the torch has been passed.

Simply amazing!

The Trio with Teresa was smoking before it as well.

We walked into some bar down from Tips before it opened and Shannon McNally was in there playing to four of us.

I love New Orleans

As a serious student of New Orleans funk, what made me realize that the torch had been passed was the fact that I wanted less of the sit-ins, such as Trombone Shorty or even, dare I say it, George Porter, and more of Ivan and the boys.

I cannot wait for the torrent.

Let us know when it's up, Luke, as I had to head home Sunday. We did get to see Ivan sit in with Papa Mali at Blue Nile late night Saturday though. And dumpstaphunk's instore was funkin awesome.

Intresting post, I don't disagree, but don't forget about Papa Grows Funk and Big Sam's Funky Nation, both of those groups lay down some heavy, heavy funk and have been doing it for awhile now.

I love both of those bands but I've never seen either of them do what went down last night in Tips. It's still get me excited and I am beyond exhausted.

Couldn't agree more. Seen Big Sam and Papa Grows Funk many times, even with their best lineups, which I don't think either has now, and they've never left me like that. Lest anyone gets their panties in a bunch, I still love and greatly respect Sam and John.

Utterly drained from a night of monumental music.

Yep. I think the torch got passed at last years show, but they certainly proved it once again. As long as Dumpsta closes out the fest at Tips, I will be there.

I missed second weekend and Dumpstaphunk, but Ivan and Raymond Weber spread it around the first weekend with New Orleans Social Club. In that case, they shared funk duties with the past masters, Leo and George, who haven't lost anything in my book. Still, I saw Dumpsta at a free show here in Richmond last spring and was blown away. Tony Hall can bring it. Not a weak link in that lineup. Ian was delivering the new cd at LMF as I was checking out, so I'm waiting for it to land here.

(P.S. Big Sam brings the funk, but he doesn't have the songs to wrap it around. Ivan does, just as the Meters did.)

Watching Dumpsta run the rain right out of the fairgounds on friday we a beautiful thing... even if it was only a few songs. we were getting ready to call it a day when they started warming up. The rain stopped, the sun came out, and we rocked the rest of the day thanks to Ivan and the boys!

I think there are a few torches to be held, theirs is just the biggest and brightest!

Ivan and the boys have been playing the nastiest, dirtiest funk on the planet for a couple of years now (missed this year's Tip's closer, but caught last year's), and nobody does it better.

To me, PGF (along with Joe Krown and some others) plays a kind of clean, happy funk, which is also outstanding.

It's tough to even compare the two different styles, and I love it all.

By the way, is there anyone else out there (besides me) who likes Jellybean's work with PGF more than Russell's? He and Donald Ramsey make one hell of a rhythm section.

oh yea and one more thing....
You woke up this morning
Got yourself a gun,
Mama always said you'd be
The Chosen One.

She said: You're one in a million
You've got to burn to shine,
But you were born under a bad sign,
With a blue moon in your eyes.

You woke up this morning
All the love has gone,
Your Papa never told you
About right and wrong.

But you're looking good, baby,
I believe you're feeling fine, (shame about it),
Born under a bad sign
With a blue moon in your eyes.

You woke up this morning
The world turned upside down,
Thing's ain't been the same
Since the Blues walked into town.

But you're one in a million
You've got that shotgun shine.
Born under a bad sign,
With a blue moon in your eyes.

When you woke up this morning everything you had was
gone. By half past ten your head was going ding-dong.
Ringing like a bell from your head down to your toes,
like a voice telling you there was something you should
know. Last night you were flying but today you're so low
- ain't it times like these that make you wonder if
you'll ever know the meaning of things as they appear to
the others; wives, mothers, fathers, sisters and
brothers. Don't you wish you didn't function, wish you
didn't think beyond the next paycheck and the next little
drink' Well you do so make up your mind to go on, 'cos
when you woke up this morning everything you had was gone.

When you woke up this morning,
When you woke up this morning,
When you woke up this morning,
Mama said you'd be the Chosen One.

When you woke up this morning,
When you woke up this morning,
When you woke up this morning,
You got yourself a gun.
sick sick sick

Nice opener!

Jellybean is AWESOME. I loved his playing with Cleary and the AMG. As great as Russell is, I think Jellybean is better.

Jellybean stays in the pocket and Russell has become about Russell more than the band he's with. That said they are both hellacious. I'll take Eric B from Anders band over both though.

So if anyone finds a copy of this show, I'd love to get my hands on it.

Please post on here if you are able to locate it. I'd very much appreciate it.

There was some threads about the show being sold out earlier. Did it look that way to anyone else? It was crowded, no doubt, but I've been in there with many more people before.

The key to Tips in my opinion is making your way up front. It's more crowded to me in the back.

Sunday night at Tips was alot of fun. I'm glad that Ivan has kept this thing going. It was great to see Art, GP Jr and Leo up there as well. I'm not so sure the elder statesmen of funk are releasing their grip on the torch just yet; more like proudly endorsing the young'uns as certified nasty.

I would agree with the comments on BSFN and PGF as being up to the task as well. I thought PGF's set at the Fairgrounds on Sunday was excellent.

I think the jury is still out on Ian. He has the name and he can hold things down alright, but can he elevate and develop the severely nasty chops that will fill out the sound more fully? I'm not necessarily talking about the machine-gun 100,000 notes a minute Leo barrage, but more the Brian Stoltz balanced attack. I know that's a tall order - we'll see what happens.

I don't doubt that the funk will live on in a variety of different formats. It's just too damn fun to play and listen to.

OK. First of all I must say that this show was absolutely hands down FIRE. Sickest night show I caught on both weekends of this year. It blew my head clear off my body. So many highlights from Leo just annihilating that solo to Theresa to Trombone shorty, etc, etc, etc...the crowd was great as well...sick sick sick party.

Second of all, they did indeed sell the show out. Of course it seems that Tips never really "sells out" as I discovered at the Fess benefit thing after first weekend, but I was told around 11pm by a few folks that it was indeed sold out, and then i saw a lot of fingers in the air during setbreak as well.

Third and finally most importantly, there were about 3 or 4 mic stands at the show, and I talked to a very kind taper from OH who told me he would be more than happy to share the show with me. I told him that I in turn would be more than happy to seed the show for him so we could get it out there for people...I emailed him today but have not heard back - with everyone frazzled and just getting back I am not expecting him to get back to me that soon, but when I get it I will seed it and post it in this thread and in the torrent thread.

Who knows, with so many mics out that night, we may get a pick of the litter if other sources start trickling out. The fella who promised to share with me told me he was running mics all 4 nights of second weekend, so im sure there is going to be a lot of stuff soon enough.

What I need to find is the stealth taper who caught the Marsalis/Connick Batiste tribute...for anyone who missed that, it was quite frankly one of the most beautiful things i have ever experienced. But thats for the "jazzfest moment" thread :)

The Dumpsta show at Tip's Sunday was my JF highlight too. Was right up front and caught all the action starting with a hot set from the Trio; Theresa was great. Would LOVE to get a copy of the show from anyone who can help. PLease let me know. That was the funkiest show I can remember. Went to Howlin' after and saw The Zig; enough said about how great the night was. NOthing like New Orleans at JF!

PLease let me know about a copy of the show!!

the Dumpstaphunk message board currently has about 9 members. Ivan is Pauliewalnuts and will answer your questions on the board, pretty cool.

I just realized I was reading the board along with Ivan when I looked down to see if anyone else was on it. Pretty cool reading a band's message board along with the band leader.

saw the d-phunk at smiths in atlanta last night...absolutely blazin' funk show yet again...i guess they got lost and showed up to the show a little on the late side, and smiths has a midnight curfew for sunday shows, but they let went on a little after 10:30 and they em play till 12:30 or some such...no encore...

show was really good tho...tony hall was going off. i was talking to tony after the show to see if they archive all their shows off the board and to see if he had heard the tips CDs from the other night...he said they didnt record their stuff and he hadnt heard it...so i pulled the CDs out of my cargo shorts and broke him off - hope they enjoy it. he invited be backstage to chill, but i was with a small krewe and lots of folks had to work in the AM, so i declined the invite.

i know they are on tour - if they come your way GO SEE EM!

So hep me out y'all. Didn't we talk about bands of the funk and what makes it funk here? Can't find the thread. Did enjoy meeting Ivan outside dba at Satchmo. A friend commented on the funkiness of Dragon Smoke that past Saturday. (I'd say it had some funky songs. How can you not be funk if you're covering meters tunes?! But at least half was all about Lindell and his guitar. ) So Ivan says that wasnt funk. And he proceeds to give us a lesson in what is funk. He says No, no, that wasn't funk. I love playing with those guys but that wasnt' funk. Funk is about what's not there. It's about the spaces.
