View Full Version : Personal Fest Highlights

Here's my personal Fest highlights this weekend.
-Meeting some of the fellow threadheads & exchanging lagniappes. I'll always be your FAN! While I love them all, my fave is the lagniappekin. It's the newest word in my personal dictionary.
-The neighbor who let us part under their carport each day. How you gonna beat covered parking near the fest?
-The Alvin Batiste set: I got goosebumps several times and nearly cried (I just don't think there was enough moisture left in me for a tear to roll out). I felt like an eavesdropper on a private musician's jam.
-Meat pies & boudin balls.
-The brass band playing outside the Gentilly gate after fest. Bought the CD.
-Dancing with Festdude Mike on the sidewalk outside the guest house at midnight singing "Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans". We got the words mixed up, and alot of the lyrics included "da-da-da-da".
-As we settled in for the Don Vappie set (Sunday closing), I looked at Festdude and said, "This is our last music set at the fest! It's almost over! I think I'm going to cry" and he off-handedly said "yeah, I know what you mean", and I said "no, dude, really, I've got tears in my eyes" (and I did).
Sigh...only 364 more sleeps.
It goes by pretty fast. Get through summer, then Christmas, and next thing you know, you're getting ready for JF.

We were also in Economy Hall fo Don Vappie to close and I started to feel kinda ad, so we split the last set, ending with Bennie Grunch, who always makes me laugh.
It was a great fest, ya'll!

Gotta pack and head to the airport, but musical highlights for me were:
Irma Thomas Mahalia Jackson tribute (nearly sobbed through most of it)
Harry Connick Jr. (Whoa Nelly!)
Tony Joe White (not many saw him, but it was goooood: a hat, one guitar, drums and that growl)
Bonnie Raitt (I love the little red headed girl)
Instruments a' Comin (the look on the Virgin's face as Shorty tore into Back in Black was worth every penny)
Everyone who played the Patry
And of course, getting to see all of you! The Virgin had a great time, despite her little bout with the flu on Friday/Saturday, and I think.....I think.....SHE GETS IT!
Hugs to all, and safe travels home.
VWGal and Virgin (no more)
Hey, VWGal, nice working the beer tent with you first Saturday!
I haven't seen anyone post about Taj Mahal's set yesterday. He about tore the blues tent down. Huge crowd packed in there, so they had to beg people to clear the aisles so the Fire Marshall would OK the show to start. Taj was on fire, rockin' from the outset. It was a great end to the fest for me.

I ate too much, drank too much and I pause when people ask..."who did you see?"...because it's all such a blur.
But my personal highlight was meeting Joss Stone at her CD signing. She is as nice of a person as she is pretty and let me say...she is one fine looking young lady. :o

Had a great time!!! One of my highlights was The Stooges Brass Band, that started playing right at 2:45 Friday as it was still rainining. As soon as they started I turned around and could see people coming out of nowhere towards the stage. They finshed the show by coming off the stage into the crowd as they played their version of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy"...good time was had by all.

Hey NOLA -- just got home... wow that Taj set was fabulous! The CD will be great... he really got the crowd going, despites the steambath we were dancing in! I was so thrilled to be able to catch the end of the jazz jam at the jazz tent on the way out. Incredible.

Best of 2007:
#1 The Allman Brothers Band
Campbell Brothers at the Old Point
Lucky Peterson
Taj Mahal (Have to agree with you on this, what a way to close out 07. Had plans on Connick, oh well.
Glad to see a few others caught Taj. Maybe it was just because it was the last set I saw, but it was one of the highlights of the fest for me.
I also thought Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas were great. When Nathan let his 7 year-old son get up there and play the drums, I was blown away. You couldn't even see the boy's face back there, just drumsticks flying over his head so he could hammer away on the cymbals. What a blast.

Saw that set also. We were in the Blues Tent most of both weekends.

This was my 20th Anniversary of going to Jazz Fest. My first one in 1987, changed my life. Unfortunately I stopped going for a while in 1996-2004.
HIGHLIGHTS WERE MANY!
1.The Campbell Brothers at Old Point bar on Friday.
What a cool bar. At one part half way through the set I walked outside, and up the levee to get some fresh air. As I look across the dark river to the city skyline a monstrous freighter is just gliding down the Mississippi River without a sound. The only sound was the beautiful steel guitars of the Campbell brothers oozing out of the Old Point Bar. Behind me the moon shined through the haze. It was one of those moments that keep me going back to New Orleans again and again.
2. Little Freddie King at the Circle bar on Monday. Watched half the set, then my brother & I took our beer and I sat in the patio looking out at Lee Circle. Some locals came by and we partied down with them. We all got wasted as and they told us crazy stories of what its like to grow up in the Big Easy. In the background Freddies guitar seeped through the window out into the street. After the set was through we tried to wait outside for a cab. The band saw us waiting and Little Freddie King’s harmonica player Bobby gave us a ride back to the hotel.
We ran into him again at the Ponderosa Stomp and thanked him again, he acted like it was not an option to help someone out.
3. Each night we ended up in the Chart House bar on Chartes for the last Abita of the night. Sometimes we would get there to late and the bartender Lisa would see us looking in the door. As we would promise her to drink our last beer fast and get out of there, she would say oh just stay a while. Next thing I know I had pumped 4-5 dollars in the Juke Box playing the Allman Brothers In Memory of Elizabeth Reed over and over. Her hospitality was incredible.
4. Ponderosa Stomp. While at first I have to say it was a blast I would give anything for it to go back to the Rock and Bowl. Don’t get me wrong the House of Blues did a great job with maximum efficiency and the show actually ended up on schedule ending around 2:24am, bummer right.
I had not seen Lazy Lester in probably 15-16 years I was amazed how he really looked and sounded good. Little Jimmy Scott was freeing amazing, god what a voice. Roky Erikson was amazing also.
5. Being reminded how wonderful the people of New Orleans are. With all of the Sh*t they have been through they have a right to be anyway they want as far as I am concerned. But the fact is they are the most hospitable, genuine, and kind folks you will find in any city in the country.
God Bless New Orleans.

Thanks for the report - Taj is usually a must-see for me, sorry I missed him. I've seen him at fest at the big stage, it's wierd he was in the blues tent. I don't think I could stand not dancing.

Sorry for the soapbox, but I ned to:
My fest highlight? The people of the city who we met and talked with and were willing to share their experiences and their hopes.
This was our first JF, but not first trip to N.O. It was our first trip since K. and were a little apprehensive. Not because of what we would find, but because we had gone through our own large "h" storm in the Caribbean in 95. To this day, it still haunts us.
But wth all of the people we talked with; waite staff, cab drivers, high school students, lawyers; the spirit of the city is strong.
I am proud of the people of this city and am grateful for what they have provided us over the years and look forward to what they will provide us as long as these feet keep on movin'.
Thank you New O'leans and God bless!

Thank YOU for coming!!! Come back soon, tell your friends to come down, write your elected officials and tell them not to forget/neglect New Orleans. These are all the things you can do to continue to help us down here...and, in turn, New Orleans will continue to provide you with an amazing time every time you come down here!!!

Elder Earl and The Bumblebees were really amazing... caught the end of one set on saturday and the full congo stage set sunday morning. I'm not a religious person, but it was truly spiritual!
Some other non-food highlights:
Radiators (we never made it to Harry because they were rocking)
Pinstripe Brass Band
Joss Stone (when she was singing)
Lil Band of Gold (all 4 songs!)
Rebirth at Tip's with Dirty Dozen (never seen them before)
Allmans (although we missed part of the set :( )
Dumpstaphunk sending the rain away
Mark Braud in Economy Hall
Leah Chase
Amanda Shaw
Dr. A.

i agree with previous poster. elder babb and the bumble bees were the second weekend highlight for me. this is what i hope the fest does more of-booking regional acts that offer a contrast to the usual fare, whether from LA or not. i could do without non-LA BNAs as a rule.
next year-how about bringing these guys back-and how about some klezmer other than the great NOKAS?

a return for 2nd weekend was pretty iffy at one point,.. but was really lookin' forward to see what the "buzz" was all about,.. and once stung by Elder and those Madison Bees of his (Sat. morn Congo Square),.. no choice but to be stung again,.. saw them a total of thrice,.. both Congo sets (a great way to start two straight days of fest),.. and the last 1/2 hr of their set in the Gospel on Sat (couldn't leave Snooks).... truely Fan-tastic stuff... loved every second of their spirited talent...
many other great moments,.. I mean c'mon,... Snooks w/ George Porter and Papa John (those two funky dudes were everywhere this year) backin' em'... yikes!!!! of course,.. the legend that is Erma Thomas payin' tribute to another legend,.. very movin'... Papa Gros and his boys threw down their usual great funk early Sun. (can neva' figure out why they always go on early???),.. and that Eric Lindell dude,.. he should be WAY mo' bigga' (successful).... the Steely Dan set was very cool way to bring back the past but it had none of the fire or local spirit that Harry Jr. brought out near his endin'... he shoulda' saved that 2nd to last tune to end another great fest with... the boy can sing,.. but he threw down some funky moves that had wimen near faintin' around me.... lucky i still had some Florida water around to revive em'...
missed out on the events of the 2nd Friday,.. but the other five days of fest were incredible.... it was real nice meetin' many of you fine peeps..... now,.. i gotta finda a way to deal w/ the post blues that set in afta' leavin' New Orleans..... sure do know what it is to miss her....

I can echo most of what I've read on this thread. The person who coined the phrase, "It's all good" must have been at JF at the time.
Judging by what I've found myself talking about the most, I guess my highest highlights would include, Taj, Ritchie Havens, Henry Butler at Howlin' Wolf, Marva Wright (with Allen Toussaint and Paul Schafer sitting in), Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Soul Rebels at Le Bon Temps Roule.
And, foremost, the city and people of New Orleans. I love that city. I'm going to move there (just as soon as my wife dies - She's convinced that she would hate it).

Smaller stages: Irma's tribute, Stephen Marley, Maurice Brown (25 year-old jazz trumpeter who is absolutely amazing.)
Night shows: Campbell Bros. (Saturday, over-the-top awesome), Willie Tee at Fan Fest.

Tons of highlights for me:
1st weekend the New Orleans Social Club with Cole Porter was amazing
2nd weekend Deacon John, Holmes Brothers were great, and Big Sam's Funky Nation really put me in a great mood
Taj Mahal was a great way to end the Fest but like most of you I was really sad to see the last set come!!!
In between we went to the Square and saw Marcia Ball and that was really fun too.
I got to meet some of you and that was definitely a highlight. See you next year--yeah yew right!

Contrary to previous advance bitching about putting Nathan in the blues tent, lots of people were up and dancing (me included) and I didn't see or hear of anyone being told not to. After all, with Nathan saying every 2 seconds, "Somebody get up!", how could they dare tell you to sit down?!?!?

I will give it a shot, though much of it is still a blur...:)
1) Maurice Brown gets the "set of the week" award; we were so glad we made it in time for his 11:30 a.m. show in the Jazz Tent on Sunday. Brown had an amazing day that day, later taking part in the Jazz Funeral and ending the night with two sets at Snugs. Whew!
2) Piano Night. Shannon Powell and Big Sam providing back-up at various points. This was the best Piano Night I could remember; a sold-out HOB didn't seem as unbearably crowded as last year.
3) New Orleans Jazz Vipers. Having to duck to avoid getting hit by a swinging guest horn player blowing with the Vipers at the Spotted Cat, we were so close.
4) Big Sam wailing at Cafe Brazil to 4 a.m. Holy smokes!
5) Stephen Marley's set, Congo Square. Reggae in the sun; 'nuff said.
6) George Benson's set, Congo Square. Thought it would be good; it was awesome.
7) Branford Marsalis set, Sunday, in Jazz Tent. Classical and classy.
8) Shannon Powell and Jason Marsalis at Sweet Lorraine's on Saturday night and Donna's on Sunday. We always make it to Donna's. First time at Sweet Lorraine's -- it is an incredible place!
9) Allen Toussaint set, Acura Stage, Sunday. Fun, sunny version of "Jimmy Buffett'' and we were so glad he did "Who Is Gonna Help Brother Get Further?'' and, at the end, started rattling off the names of NOLA musicians who haven't made it home yet.
10) Fan Fest, especially Ms. Neville and hooking up with some Thread Heads.
11) Kermit Ruffins at Vaughan's on Thursday; it was so packed, we didn't get in, but we stayed on the porch, listened from there and talked to so many people.
12) Dottie Peoples belting it out in the Gospel Tent on a Sunday. My heavens.
What a week!

As a first-weekender, I already posted my faves. At the top, I'd have to put Dirty Dozen/Donald Harrison/and a high school kid from Houston at Tip's for Instruments a Coming. That gets the music and the message in 1 swoop.
Personally, though, a Fest highlight for me was renting a bicycle and cruising the town. It made Festing a cinch. I got a good look at Gentilly rebuilding all the way to the lake. First visit to Algiers (a beer at the Old Point). Breakfast at Elizabeth's. And all of those cruises through the Quarter.
With Oz in my ear, I might add.
Bicycle Michael's on Frenchmen.
Too many to name, really. I will say that each year the people of New Orleans and my lovely Threadheads have become a bigger & bigger highlight for me and Mrs. Ohio. This year was no exception.
You all know i'm never at Fest for BNA's, so I'm surprising myself by saying that Allmans & Steely Dan were way up on my list. Actually my favorite set of all was Lowriders at Ray's Room! Y'all missed an incredible show there...
One small disappointment was that Bobby Charles failed to take the stage. It was NOT billed as a Bobby Charles Tribute, as mentioned elsewhere here. He was supposed to play and sing, but he backed out as is his habit. He did the same at the Stomp in '04. Flake. A good set nonetheless. When will you ever see Mac, Marcia, and Sonny playing together...
Thanks for the great times!

And I DID get to see walter - he lives by the racetrack and I was walking by, leaving fest, and he popped his head out of his window in a wifebeater - HI WALTER! (big smile) HEY! HOW YOU DOIN!

Yupper, cycling around town every year is a definite highlight for me as well - about to go do some more before heading for the airport to go home (sniff).

oh my god, how could I forget these!! Big Chief Monk Boudreaux closing first weekend....amazing, truly amazing and my first weekend highlight by far!!!
2nd Friday- leaving the fairgrounds because we were freezing and it was still R'ing......hearing the brass band horn start up....looking at Jazz and Heritage and seeing Shamarr and the Stooges warming up with no electricity. We said "f*ck it" headed there, dropped our crap on some wood and started to party. The r@in stopped, the Stooges kicked serious azz and at the end, Shamarr led the boys down the stairs on to the muddy grounds with all of us and we had a huge dance party of "jump, jump" in the mud with everyone surrounding the band. It was truly one of my most amazing fest moments EVER :)

Benny Grunch and the bunch are really just a local novelty act. They do silly songs with lots of local references & jokes. We actually ended the fest with them cause we wanted to walk out of there laughing - it worked.

You can often find them playing for free at Parkway Bakery.

setting; great people; great food--boy
am I glad I showed up!
** Instruments a Comin' at Tips.....fantastic...one
great act after the other and super
vibes
** Campbell Brothers at Old Point Bar....probably
the highlight of fest....they are from
another world they're so good...and the
guest musicians were first class A+
** Lucky Peterson (Blues Tent)
** Treme Brass Band (and I did see that 9 year
old girl belting out those songs....awesome
and I'm sure we'll be hearing more on her
career
** Rod Stewart
** Sonny Landreth
** Pete Fountain (final number- 'When the Saints
Go Marchin' On)-great 2nd Line
through tent
** Bumblebees
** Dynamic Smooth Family (Gospel tent during
storm)
** Tab Benoit
Mardi Gras Indians, Brass Bands, any Gospel.....what can I say! I'm still singing tunes in my head a week later.

(reposted from "Corona's Pics" thread) Not at fest, but during fest week: after hanging with Corona outside of Instruments A Coming at Tip's for a while, she said "come on back in and hang out with us down in front." I thought to myself "yeah, right!", because just once all night I had made my way 2/3 of the way down to the stage to see and headed back shortly thereafter because it was so hot and crowded. Anyway, Corona waltzed in smiling with a drink held high and SLID right through the crowd LIKE BUTTAH (of course, it didn't hurt that she's gorgeous and HOT!) and I followed right behind with my hand on her shoulder and I believe Swag was behind me with his hand on my shoulder, like a conga line!!! Lo and behold, we get literally right down in front of the stage near the door on the left, meet up with the rest of her krewe, and there was actually room to not only breath, but boogie too. Hung there for quite a bit (cause the friends I came with had left by that time) and had a blast! Thanks, Corona, I'll follow you anywhere from now on!:D

Hunni, we were still there, just not where you were. Hung with corona etal too. But mostly hung out upstairs. Just glad you got through the door.Oops, a little semantic screw-up there, sweetie. I meant the friends I came from Mass. with and was hanging out with, not the friends who so kindly gave me a ride to Tips! Thank GOD I was lucky enough to know the right person in the right place who knew the right people to aid me in my time of dire need (I had a purchase confirmation, which I thought was the same as a ticket but wasn't, so they wouldn't let me in 'cause they were sold out, but he convinced them to allow me to purchase another ticket).
Guess what?!?! When I got home, I looked in the place where I keep advance tickets -- and sure 'nuff, there was my ticket that I had insisted had never come in the mail! LOL! I'm not even gonna try to get the refund they promised they'd give me, I'm happy to let them have the extra $ for instruments and so, so happy to have been at that incredible show!!
