View Full Version : What I Learned

As a virgin (uhm, excuse me former virgin), thes are sme of the things I learned:
1) This don't happen anywhere but New O'leans. (Been here 3 times before so I know dat.)
2) The town, the people, the music is the lifeblood of America. Itneeds to exist.
3) As said by a lawyer that we were walking with from the streetcar to JF, "Jazz Fest is the Mardi Gras for adults."
4) Watching the Webcast thse two days, made it so great to see the performances we were at. Man to relive the memories!!!! To see the live sets, man wish we were there. While it's not the same, we know what the feeling was. (Buckwheat, Allen, Harry.... oh man to have been there)
5) The new music we have stumbled upon that we had no knowledge of. I guess 1,900 CDs just don't cut it; have to build an addition on the house.
6) Thank you so much to the Heads here that provided so much help that when we walked through the gates on the first day, we felt right at home.
7) Finallly; cubes are great, but it's all about the music (and food).

I did SCREAM! I also said, YEAH! I also sang LOUDLY. And, I LET'EM HEAR IT!
Now I'm home, but my voice is still in NOLA. (Along with other parts of my physical and spiritual anatomy.)

As another de-flowered Festal Virgin, here is what I learned:
1. TH's rule. They take their music, food, and friends very seriously, and have more fun than anyone else while doing so.
2. Jerry Lee Lewis needs to stop singing ballads, and stick to rocking songs. I am really glad I saw him live, but also felt the collective twinge of "uh oh" during the slow songs. Rock on, Killer!
3. Going to Nawlins was going home, even though I'd never been there before. :)
4. The volunteers manning the entrances need hugs too, and I was only too happy to oblige.
5. You ladies gave us guys the best lagniappes ever by wearing what you did (or better yet, did not). ;)
6. After a few cold ones, $4 is not that much for a beer. :D
7. FOMS subsided once I entered the gates. I saw what I wanted, missed more of what I wanted to see, but it was OK. I was THERE, and that was fine with me!
8. I am a TH, and am damn proud to say so!
I learned that warm hugs from friends and strangers (and sometimes strange friends) are just the best!hey I resemble that...
Oz, I just did not get enough of you!

I need to stay for the whole fest so I can get some sleep a few nights ,Kermit Ruffins never starts on time at Vaughns, The LMF is a cool place to see free shows, it is not a bad walk from the Quarter to the Fair Grounds, it is a long Bike ride from the Quarter then uptown then to the Lake:eek: and red ants realy like to bite my ass. that reminds me of Paul Sanchez at the LMF monday before Rebirth with this tune http://carbonleaf.vox.com/library/audio/6a00d41417e9b16a4700cd970e31944cd5.html

Sorry DT :(
Steveo- speaking from experience of staying 13 days- my earliest night was Monday after fest and I passed out from exhaustion and booze around 12:30 am. That was my earliest night of the whole trip....never missed a lick of fest either. Sleep deprivation is guaranteed no matter how long you stay for JF :)

For me it is the little hole in the heart you have when you miss something. Each and everytime I go to New Olreans it gets larger and the longing gets deeper. While I sit in the Shenandoah Valley (a very lovely place) my heart is somewhere else.

1- Dont drink the so-so smoothies unless the are completely frozen, they melt and taste like luke-warm cough syrup.
2- Was supposed to come down 1st wednesday but because of work couldn't come down till 1st saturday. Hit the ground running Saturday morning and tried to cram 11 days of the Fest into 7 days. No pacing what so-ever and paid for it a couple of days. Pace yourself and enjoy however much time you have down there. It's all gonna be good no matter what or how much you do.

You are not kidding about that. I was up past three in the morning more times during those 11 days than I had been for the whole year since last Jazzfest. I finally passed out on a bar stool in the Funky Pirate, at around 10 PM the second Sunday. I think my snoring bothered the band.
We had plans for later that evening but I just couldn't go on. And I'm still exhausted, four days later.
Maybe I need a check-up. :)

Seriously, I just slept!
When I came back for my comfy spot at Tips later that night and it was taken, I curled up on the benches upstairs, not nearly as comfy!
Then Tuesday night I snagged the couch next to the stage in Ray's, apparently Ken wanted that couch so he had to go upstairs. I slept right through the start of Bonerama. Jeff woke me up, I was still groggy so asked cutie pie Mark Mullins if I could grab his ass after the show. He was so obliging, then gave us a ride home ;) I love NOLA!

Shoot, I hardly went to any night shows, and I've STILL got the rockin pneumonia this week. TONS of work to do and I'm in a daze. I only WISH it was the daze between...instead of the daze after. So much more painful. Feels like a HUGE effort just to focus on anything.

I learned a lot:
1. If you bring rum-soaked cherries to Fest, you will have many friends.
2. The blacksmith by the fais do do stage is one of the coolest folks at Fest.
3. SoCo inflatable sofas make handy rafts in the Acura River.
4. There ain't no peanuts like the Jumbos at Fest.
5. Always check to see how much toilet paper your rental has.
6. 13 on Frenchman Street has tater tots until 4:00 a.m.
7. And most importantly, no matter what you do at Fest, get your face painted once and it's all people will talk about.
