As Little Feat Says - you know you're over the hill, when your mind makes a promise that your body can't fill.
I caught a nasty bug sometime on Tuesday and wound up in bed in the hotel all day and night on Wednesday, and still sick on Thursay. So I wound up heading home early like I had originally planned, and didn't make it through 2nd weekend.
Joe keeps telling me it was "old person's virus" and I just can't hack it anymore. :p
He may be right! Anyway, I had a fabulous time and it was great meeting so many fellow Threadheads!!!

Friday:
Went to see Eddie Bo at 11:30am Gentilly, but he still wasn't on by the time the next act was supposted to start - Zachary Richard, so that was a bummer.
Headed over to see the great New Orleans Nightcrawlers at Jazz Tent
then the Amazones women drummers at Congo, which was only so-so because the sound was so low
Back to Jazz Tent for Astral Project - highlight of the day for me. They were on fire!
Then on to Acura stage where I squeezed through the crowds to Amy and Jeff's camp and saw Dr. John and then Van Morrison. I enjoyed Van - he seemed to have a nice slow steady groove going, but I bet some folks were disappointed that it was low-key.
Oh yeah, and I ate, and ate, and ate - spicy crawfish tails, fish ferdinand, fried shrimp po-boy, and lots and lots to drink.

I came home with the "Jazzfest Crud" that actually started Sat. My throat's not on fire like it was, but a week later, I've still got the cough and snot. Hope you feel better soon. And such a bummer to miss the 2nd weekend of the Fest.

Caught a little Zulu Gospel Ensemble on my way in, but was too hungry to stay, so I headed over to the beer tent to say hi to folks, and then to get food. Caught a couple of songs by Chief Iron Horse and the Black Seminole Mardis Gras indians which was pretty special.
Then back to Gospel Tent for breakfast with the Johnson Extension, along with Jenn and David and Lis and her girls.
Next, I ambled over to the Jazz Tent for Jessie McBride & The Next Generation. They were quite good, and it was fun seeing the next generation of N.O. jazz players.
Went by Acura and danced up front to about half of the Jon Cleary set. The new standing room only areas were fantastic. You really could walk up and see acts and even cut across the stages by going through the front.
After the TH meetup, went back to the Jazz Tent to see Mose Allison, one of my favorites. He has a really quirky vocal style that I love. He's getting older, but still a treat to see!
Went by the Blues Tent for a little Richie Havens, and then headed over to Congo for Rebirth. Ran into Sha and Juls and Zydeco Bonnie and others on the track. We had a great view of the stage and plenty of room to boogie. Rebirth was smokin' and the crowd was sending them lots of love.
Ended up at Funkjunkkie's camp at the Indians stage for the Crescent City Allstars with James Andrews.
Food included Crawfish Streudel, Fried chicken wings, Bread pudding with white chocolate sauce, plus goodies like beignets, ice cream, sweet potato pone and some pies.

umm, mine was the other kind of bug (intestinal), but thanks for the snot update Bill. :D
It was great seeing you at Fest again - you've been missed the last few years!
I'm okay with leaving early - I had so much fun the time I was there that I was filled up!

Sunday
Started out with the Golden Star Hunter indians
Got some icy cold oysters and some champagne in a can, and breakfasted at the Lagniappe Stage for Bruce flett & The Bluebirds (okay)
Then over to Gentilly to find the Threadheads camped behind the sound board and saw the New Orleans Social Club which was just fantastic. Especially loved John Boutte's version of Why.
Skipped Irma so I could catch some Jerry Lee Lewis at the Acura Stage. I had to see the legend. He could still sing and play suprisingly well, but to me, the fire wasn't there. I think maybe it's just his age.
So I walked by Congo Sqaure for a little Banda el Recodo. It was definitely South American pop, complete with lots of spanish announcements that kept reminding me of a radio station, so moved along.
Went by Blues Tent, but didn't feel like fighting the crowd for George Thorogood, but he sounded like big fun from the pavement. Wound up at the Hot 8 Brass Band at the Indians stage. I think they are my new favorite jazz band!
Back to TH camp at Gentilly for most of Bonnie Raitt, then ended the day with Monk Boudreaux and the Golden Eagles at the Indian Stage.
Food included the oysters and surprisingly good champagne in a can (Sofia Coppola brand), fried pork chop sandwich, potato salad, fruit salad, lots of sweets like blackberry cobbler, custard pie and macroons.

That throat stff sucks, doesn't it. I get it every year, along with losing my voice, usually by first Sunday. Glad you guys got over it!

Thursday night had an almost 3-hour dinner with a big group of friends at Ralph's at the Park. Then back to the hotel and to bed by midnight, ready for fest the next morning.
Friday night had a laid-back evening with Funkkjunkie, catching up with my old, dear friend.
Saturday night went to see the Underdawg's at Ray's, but the show was cancelled (basically it sounds like the club owner was a dickhead). About 30 or so Threadheads milling around on Frenchmen street, which was hilarious. Then Vickie and I headed over to see The Hot 8 Band w/Shamar at Le Bon Temps, and hung out with Lis and her girls.
Sunday went to a sweet house party after the fest with lots of friends, then headed back to Frenchman Street with Ohio and Pattie, and Barry and Nancy for The Original Lowriders. It was at Ray's club. We tried sitting up in the balcony where we could actually sit and give our feet a rest, but it was oven-hot up there. The band was big fun, definitely into the crowd participation thing, but they played lots of my favorites, including Cisco Kid, Slipping into Darkness, etc.
Monday morning was nice and lazy, and then the marathon raffle drawing at our hotel - the LeMoyne. A bunch of Threadheads were there hanging out. I actually won some great stuff - and I never win anything! I won the tote bag, some postcards of jazz fest foods, and a $50 gift certificate at LMF!
Monday night was Instruments a comin' and we had splurged on the VIP tickets. The food was okay, but it was really special to be hanging out there with all of the various artists. I even got to meet Fats Domino! I said "I'd like to shake your hand and thank you for everything you've done for this city" and he started singing "I want to hold your hand". What a blast. Jenn and David scored a great spot on the balcony and I hung with them for most of the night. What a fantastic lineup, every act was great!
Tuesday was the amazing Patry and Roux-GA-Roux. The party was perfect, everything went so smoothly. It was again the highlight of my trip. I'd travel down to NOLA just for that patry, even if fest wasn't going on. The food was great, the music was awesome, and the Roux-GA-Roux follow up was terrific! I started getting sick though, so missed the final act - Bonerama - which everyone said was the highlight of the night.
Wednesday morning up and over to Rosetree Fest for muffelettas and a tour of his large, beautiful studio. Then Funkkjunkie and I went to the Bourbon House for lunch. It was my first time there and I really like the place. I'd definitely go back to sit at the raw bar.
But the virus really kicked in around then, and that was it for me. I was toast. Managed to crawl from the hotel to Walgreens for some medicine, then back to bed.
Finally packed up Thursday night and headed home.
So it was an abbreviated, but fantastic trip. I'll try to get pix up tomorrow.

Ah, sorry you had to go home early :( I know I hated to leave, and I had changed my plans from staying 16 days to 8 days at least 2 months ago. I always hate leaving that city and all my friends... but this time, surprisingly, I did not get sick...well I had a little bout with a stomach thing at the patry, but I think between the heat, the 4 jello shots, the crawfish and jambalaya (which was so good) and shrimp pasta... to much food, and probably my meds, my tummy decided to sort of freak out on me. My little nap back at Juls and Charlies hotel room in the nice, icy cold air really helped me a lot. I zonked out almost as fast as my head hit the pillow (sorry Barb, no we did not really go there for some wild sex). It was really good to splash some cold water on my face and neck, take a few Anacin (thank you Charlie) and crash. My foot was swelling a lot too.. but after that, I felt pretty good. I did drink a LOT of that vitamin water. Never had that before, but boy that was good, and I had one real coke rather than a diet one as I would have usually done. Figured the sugar rush was better than more sodium.
I think having to actually take it easier than I normally would have really paid off. It's the first time I've ever come home w/o getting the crude.
Take lots of airborne and or Emergen-C, and some Esberitox to help you feel better faster! Oh no... it actually says that on the Esberitox box! Be well, my friend... it was GREAT to see you again! xo

I'll second that . . . sorry to hear about y'all not feeling well :( I hope everyone gets well and better soon!
It's been great (and I still have a couple more days before heading West), but there were a couple of nights when the spirit was willing, but the feets were weak.
However, while I did have more of a voice this year (after really losing it last year) - it's been getting raspier and raspier the past few days . . .

"Jazzfest crud," huh, interesting-
Totaly can relate here... and I'm not buying the age theory as, in eveidence this past weekend, we are all very much young-at-heart!
Anyway, all four of our Krewe ended up with one bug or another--- two had/have sore throats and swollen glands from day two on, one is now totally congested and I spent all day sunday at the fest, all the last night in my hotel and all of today on the plane nasueous and with stomach pain... I am not complaining...it still was all good!

Mine wasn't the flu....just some upper respiratory stuff that I've still got a week later. Starting kinda feeling it late Sat., then by Sunday night, my throat was on fire. Kept me up most of the night. Then came the cough and snot. A lot of years I escape the dreaded "Jazzfest Crud", but not this year. :(
(FWIW, I think "Jazzfest Crud" is caused by all the smokey clubs and the dust and debris at the track).

i got the swollen glands, sore throat sinus thingy a week or so before fest - went to the doc and loaded up on shots & antibiotics - finished my meds the on wednesday before we left & felt like i was having a relapse - when we got to NOLA, we walked over to LMF & listened to some tunes - then stood in line at Acme to get some much needed nourishment - i had a horrible sinking spell while waiting to get in and started blacking out - luckily, some very nice gentlemen from Canada were in line behind us and somehow got me inside & seated - the staff there was wonderful taking care of me - they gave me a cold rag for my neck & a coke to drink - i did okay at fest on friday, but got overheated on saturday while listening to Johnny Rivers - had to lay on the ground with a wet bandana on my face while my friends made it through the crowd to get me water - however, i'd made a full recovery by the time Rod came on
the sickness so many of you are describing sounds like what i had to begin with, hope i didn't spread it around
neen, so sorry you had to leave early - stomach thingys are the worst
enjoyed meeting you & thanks for the fest bag!

I got lucky and caught no crud or cold sores but my feet failed me a LOT....was real frustrating and upsetting at times. Lots of pain pills and slept a few hours a night with them high up on pillows. I kept saying I wish we could have 2 sets of feet....one for day time and one for night time.....that would be perfect.....
Neen, I'm so sad you got so sick like that....and to all the other T-heads that got sick too. Take care of yourselves....course my feet are fine now but I'd give that up in a second to be back in New Orleans right now :(

I didn't catch anything, either. I did wake up with a sinus headache once each weekend but it went away quick once I got moving around and to fest. And my shoulders are so sunburned!
