anyone else catch the willie nelson benifit block party on frenchman wed. afternoon? it was outside ray's boom boom, they set up a stage in the middle of the road on frenchman and had live music and killer b-b-q from about 11:00 until about 7:00 or so. they were selling willie water.... for real!!! bottled willie nelson water sold as a charity benefit. no actual willie there, but we did get the likes of kirk joseph, papa mali...
cyril neville, charmaine neville, and a neville aunt whose name slips my mind came out and did a rockin' set! cyril did talk a little about why he has not been back... saying to the effect that his neighborhood basically looks the same today as it did 2 weeks after the storm, with the exception of a few trailors. the lack of water and electricity... basically urging every one to understand that the areas we see during fest are not what the outer neighborhoods of new orleans look like. (as we well know). he also communicated frustration that friends and family once a short walk or drive up the street, are now scattered throughout the country... not much that we didn't already know about, but he did show up, he did rock frenchman street, he did say what was on his mind, and i got the impression you will see more of him in new orleans as time goes by.
all in all it was a very cool way to spend the wednesday afternoon between... one of the highlights of my abbreviated jazzfest journey this year.
(and of course the patry... that was a blast!)
