I was talking to a friend about this the other day and I sort of remember before Katrina that they were going to expand Jazz Fest to 3 weekends. Was I dreaming or what?? It's driving me nuts because to me right now it seems nuts.

Never heard that before.
They did try adding a 1st Thursday in '03, but attendance was low enoght that it was not repeated.

If I remember right, they did do 3 weekends at Jazz Fest's 10th anneversery. They never tried it again after that.
I do remember that 1st Thursday a few years ago! That was a great day, with small crowds. (I guess too small, so they didn't do it again). Now we don't even get a 2nd Thursday! :(

the idea/rumor has been tossed around before, but never anything to substantiate it.
2006? FQ Fest did fall the weekend before jazz fest, so you could have done 3 weekends.
and whenever May 1st is a sunday, Memphis in May (& kentucky derby) fall on the weekend after 2nd weekend. so those of us driving home via Memphis or Louisville could have a 3rd festival weekend. but i have very little interest in Memphis in May (love Memphis other weekends).
i agree, 3 weekends would be like the Iron Man of festivals. i was sick for 2+ weeks after my 11 day run this year.

Already booked flights for next year (!) so we're there for BOTH weekends. Planning to shape up so I can get through it with a bit more ooomph!
Just my luck if the dates change!

its been that way as long as i know (1990).
fyi - 2nd sunday in may is Mother's day in the USA.

Yes, I would never survive that. I am scared just thinking about it.

I wouldn't survive it, even if I could afford it.

If I could afford it, I could do it. It's a marathon, not a sprint. ;P
Even after 12 days it felt like only a few. I could do it for sure!

I'd have to slow my ass down in order to make it...I sprinted for 12 days....haven't quite mastered the marathon concept yet lol!

I find a direct correlation between the length of time I'm in the city and the intensity of the withdrawal...3 weeks would be way harder than 2.....for sure.

honestly,.. i'm still in the damn dumps......
every year it gets harder and harder to say goodbye to New Orleans after fest... what's good about leavin' a city that offers up so many of the best things in life??... all that incredible food, the best music, the historical setting, and more than anything, seein' and enjoyin' real people hanging out and just having fun as they actually take the time to be be nice to one another,.. just because... from the first,.. it has always felt just "so" right in New Orleans...
the frown that comes upon leaving New Orleans every spring for me is also directly related to the time of year that the fest is held.... for many of you it may mark the beggining of summer fun but unfortunately in my world it marks the end of the season i love the best...
that stretch from mid October all the way through fest is the best... mid October welcomes the return of those first cool breezes to Florida,.. the windows and doors fling open, and can and do remain that way throughout the day.. nothing beats allowin' all that fresh air to rush in and circulate after months of heat and humidity... the convertable top comes down durin' the day,.. and stays down all day and night... the gulf water cools and the fall fishin' heats up... the holidays then announce their arrival, and after giving thanks continue to do their merry and happy thing...
now and then, the mid florida gulf coast winter offers a much welcome chance to break out the long sleeves and jeans,.. but before you know it the pitchers and catchers check in, and just like that, another baseball season awakens the entire country to the coming of a new year... that leads to an entire month of grapefruit league action,.. the main action bein' very white people from up north takin' in much suds and sun as they (and we) enjoy laid back close up games,.. peanuts too... next comes all that anticipation and last minute plannin' for the explosion of senses that is fest,.. and after much glorious non stop celebration the realization that leavin' New Orleans after festin' has come to mean to me that those long hot Southern summer days are getting ready to settle in for a long visit,.. and that becomes less desirable each and every year...
oh well,.. gotta go cut the freakin' lawn again... another great thing about winter down here... the lawn doesn't need cuttin' every five damn days.... enough whinin',.. got me some sweatin' to do....

I hear ya Paul.....especially on the season change....however...for up here in Canada...flip it the other way of the long, cold, dark and dreary winter...the only thing that gets me through it is the promise of Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest.
Hang in there bro.....((((((PaulC)))))
