View Full Version : Safety issues walking from CBD/Embassy Suites to NO Arena for tickets?

We'll be in a day before the Fest so we wanted to save ourselves some $$ on tickets (that means more food/beer for us) and get out tickets at the Arena. It's less than a mile each way to the Arena from our hotel on Julia St. Is it an okay area to walk or should we pay the $15 for a cab?

Any insight is much appreciated!

I'm not exactly sure where the arena is, but I think, for the most part, if you're in the CBD during the day, you're gonna' be o.k......Correct me if I'm wrong all you veterans.......

Hey Now---In general, you will be just fine walking, being daylight and all...... Also, if I had to guess, a cab would be about 5 or 6 bucks w/ a tip. Cabs are very reasonable in N.O. Have a great time at Fest, Matthew

Unless things have changed drastically since last year, you should be ok. The arena BO closes at 4:30pm so you shouldn't have any problems. It's a little grimey down that way, but there's a lot of auto traffic.

Hotel on Julia, you might be in the warehouse dist vs CBD, good idea to mapquest it if you call a cab, United is the way to go

I'm also at the Embassy Suites on Julia. I'm planning on walking to/from the quarter(night and day), Lafayete Square (day), and Howling Wolf (night).

Anyone see any safety issues with that?

Thanks for the info everyone! United Cab quoted me $7 one way.

Hey mplsbear-We'll be landing 5/3 and heading back North on 5/8. What's your ETA?

Same schedule! Yeah u rite, we already have 5 that I know of on that flight, but there will be many more. We will be converging before hand at the nearest airport bar. We will be the loud unruly ones, come over and say

Walking to the Arena from the Embassy Suites is fine. Take Julia toward the Superdome (i.e. away from the River), turn right on Loyola Avenue and left on Girod. Girod runs between the Superdome and the Arena. The Arena box office will be on the far end of the Arena on the Girod side.

I just got back from there and the lines were surprisingly short. Good luck tomorrow!

You have great info from reliable folks, but if you're still feeling a little apprenhensive, may I suggest you cab it to your destination? Then, if you feel more confident about your surroundings, you could then walk back to the hotel. It's always easier to get back to where you started from than it is to venture out into uncharted territory. Probably the worst thing that would happen to you is that you might get lost for a bit and then get frustrated with yourself.

I've always found New Orleans cabbies to be a font of useful information. And they are up to date on potential trouble spots because they are out on the streets every day. A lot of the folks here use United Cab because, post-K, many of the drivers who work for United are still local citizens.

Last year, I was in town for 9 days for Jazz Fest. I used a cab at least 2X daily. For the entire visit, I was driven by only 3 local cabbies. Many of the replacements are foreign-born and they don't have good knowledge of the city.
I am not criticizing them for not being local. What I expect is for a driver to have a good idea of a location in his head when I give an address, intersecting streets, and neighborhood. I find it kind of unsettling when the driver is on the cell phone the entire trip trying to get directions for the destination. It doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Anyway, T.M.I.....I know!:D I'll just shut my big fat mouth and wish you a Happy Jazz Fest!

We're first time Festers. Been to NO four times since Katrina but as volunteers (helped w/animal rescue early on 10/05,1/06 & 2/06 and gutted houses in SBP Thanksgiving week '06. It'll be a whole different experience this time around. First off, we'll have a bed--slept in our van our last four trips. Looking forward to the pleasures the Big Easy and JazzFest has to offer.

So what flight on the return on the 8th? it would be a shame not to meet ya alls.
Ifn' your dwtn, you might notice that Rod Stewart and co are camped out @ the St Paul Hotel right now.there at the x-2 nite, didn't see him when I went to lunch, but the roadies have equipment all over the place and the doormen from the hotel looked bewildered.

Kewl maybe we can do lunch @ the Q post Jazzfest and compare notes. We are werk neighbors.
For the fest we are staying uptown. There are many options on getting to the fest, try different modes. Are you renting a car?
We usually drive there.we go early and have not had a problem finding a parking place or lot nearby. (secret parking spot :)you would have to enter the witness protection program if I told you)

We wont have a car for the fest. Thought about using the local bus or a cab to get there. Trying to avoid the whole Jazzfest Express thing as it sounds like a cattle call and kinda spendy on top of it.
We're getting a car on Monday to drive around and check out the progress of the city and met up with the residence we met on our prior trips.
We are so excited to go--one week from today and we'll be on our way!!
Any meetups on Thursday evening we should consider? As this is all new to us, we appreciate any guidance from you veterans.
