I never shot Jazzfest and here is my question...
Do you guys know if they let the photographers in da pit shoot only 3 songs and then kick them out?
That's how it is at other concerts and it was at voodoo fest.... I know ..I know I will find out, but I'm just wishing they let ya keep on shooting! :)

99% of the time you can stay in the "pit" for the whole set. Now for Van Morrison, nobody in the pit at anytime.

Pompo,
Was just wondering with what type of lens you'll be shooting with. I finally got a DSLR for Jazzfest. I've got a 50mm 1.8 and an 18-200 zoom for some of the larger stages. Do you use anything with a fixed apeture of about 2.8? All my equipment is Nikon by the way. Thanks for any help you can give
Aloha

I like to get close ups period, but since the background is alwasy boring and unattractive framing tight always work better. My favorite lens for that, which I use most of times at concerts, is the 70-200 2.8. wide open at 2.8 of course so ya can use the fastest possible shutter speed. With a wider lens like the 50 you would need to be too close to the artist to fill the frame, and even if you could get close enough you would be pointing up which definetely won't look good at all.
Use the zoom lens and keep the framing tilted a bit (like 20 degrees), that''ll give ya a more dynamic shot...trust me! :)
Happy shooting....hmmm...photographing :)

Of course I knew what you meant, but when put into a sentence that begins with "I cant wait to ... ", it really lent a serial killer quality to you.

In answer to your original question, the only time I've heard of a limitation is with those few big name acts that insist in their rider. Typically Jazzfest doesn't sign acts that have lots of demands, but occasionally they will do it. It's rare, most especially because the guy five feet from you who's not in the pit can shoot the whole show. Another problem at festivals is that these demands often occur at the last minute. The choice is either they get what they want or the act walks. Most the people who play Jazzfest are pretty cool anyway.

It depends on the artist and I truly mean each artist can/will be different. YOu just kind of have to check before each act to find out. This is mostly on the big stages (Acura and Gentilly), but even on some of the smaller stages. I can tell you last year, a few examples were...
Dave Matthews Band - whole set
Bob Dylan - nobody at all
Paul Simon - only US publications, no international for some reason
Springsteen - think it was only 12 photographers allowed in.
Ani DiFranco - first 2 songs
But most were first three songs, but that is more of the national acts. You can check at the press tent, where you'll get your wristband, but most of the time you juat have to ask the head security guy at each stage. Most of the time they'll just tell you what the deal is anyway.
Good luck and see you in the pit.

and year before, got booted out of Paul Simon before he started, only let a few in. I'll be back without a pass this year, shooting with my trusty Fuji S2 and Nikon 18-200VR, pushing to ASA 800-1600 in the tents, great tight shots - and wide shots when I wanted them without changing lenses, which is nice when there's dust, grime, wind, as in Jazzfest...
How things have changed- 4 years ago Nikon F4, 2.8 lens, pushing 400 film to 800, less than ideal color, and limited on shutter speed...

Always wanted one. Can get great shots at smaller stages and many interesting moments around the grounds (check out www.pbase.com/galleries/jlbrock). Always had great luck in the jazz tent as well (20D/70-200/4.8 - entry level L glass, so slow inside but as hcazoo sez, you can push the ASA to 1600-320). My overall experience has been very favorable without a pass and I try to be as respectful of others not lingering too long in prime real estate. However, I would like to get much in much tighter. If anyone has any tricks to snagging a pass without a press credential I'd love to hear it as these are magic moments and I love to shoot. Also, how do y'all think getting shots will be with the SRO section up front? It's one thing to wade through chairs and blankets and another through wall to wall folks.
