i don't care if its a socialist perk - i love my local library.
i will go with the assumption that most 'city' libraries provide similar opportunities. (i have to request some materials to be delivered to my closest branch, but it usually only takes a few days)
i am able to borrow Frommer's & Fodor's books for major tourist destinations.
i am able to borrow DVD travel films & documentaries.
i am able to borrow CD's of all types of music.
and its FREE!
so all you NOLA newbies: use you local libraries to provide information & inspiration for your upcoming treks. many have online options for requests & renewals.

I LOVE my local Library. My current loan includes a bio on Billie Holiday and a few cd's. Also the internet when my puter breaks down. Thank you Mr. Franklin.

Thats where I do most of my internet stuff, including now (too cheap to pay for home Net)
Americans are way too paranoid of a little socialism, Europeans think we're nuts (they're right...)

I live in a sort of slummy suburb with a cheap rundown library. Thanks to the combined library system in the suburbs ,I spend all my time in the fancy library in the rich suburb 2 towns over. I go to mine every 3 years to renew my card.

Public libraries rule! Support your local -- join its "Friends of" or similar group.

I still consider my parents taking me to the library as a kid every weekend, and getting me my own library card at 7 or 8 years old one of the greatest gifts they've ever given me, access to the world, limited only by my own imagination (which if you've met me know, is not limited at all! HA! :D

I have always been enamored of the library ...my mother would punish me by taking away my library priveleges when I was a kid ..way harsher than grounding me !!! I love the library for all of the above listed reasons and one more ..THEY NOW HAVE EBOOKS !!! I am soo stoked !!

I did not spend much time in my local library as a kid, but spent lots of time in our High school one where I used to get banished to for misbehaving in or out of class.
This inadvertently helped my poor education as I had nothing to do, but find interesting stuff to read on a variety of subjects, Politics in particular, and i have found that in some instances a lot of what you discovered or learnt there, remains with you for the rest of your life.
