Hello all,
Any recommendations on small, quiet, intimate and free!) jazz or blues clubs? Chairs are a nice feature too. Smoke free?
Just can't force myself to do another HOB smoked sardines trip this year ...
Arturo
has anyone been to 520 (820) Fulton inside the Harrah's? Looks pretty domesticated but the ads in Offbeat so "no cover, no minimum" ... does this also mean no funk?

Snug Harbor is quiet & intimate & has chairs but it sure ain't free. It may be hard to find live music joints that do not have some kind of cover during Jazzfest.

What other clubs have you been to in NOLA (other than HOB)? ... for a point of reference
Spotted Cat and Apple Barrel are both small, intimate, and free. But both can also get pretty crowded during Fest.

There's the cafe next to Cafe DuMonde that always has a jazz group playing.
Anyone help out with the name?

The only clubs that wont be smokey will be the ones with resturants attached .
spotted cat is really cool on frenchmen st .... apple barrel is free as well but I would not call their regular line up jazz necessarily ...They have more of a roots kinds folk and rock / blues base .
I have a friend who played a gig at harrahs the other night and said it was really cool ..... A very laid back crowd .....But i have ot been there yet myself so would not be able to say first hand .

stumbled into Fritzel's when I was down for Jazzfest '05 and found it to be a great small pub to take in some free dixieland style jazz. It's on Bourbon just past all the craziness and right before the gay area.
Pretty sure there is smoking in there but if I remember correctly it's not too bad and when we cruised in there at about 10 the waitress sat us right in front of the band so it doesn't get too crowded. great place for sure.

Fritzel's.Spotted Cat,Palm Court ( sit at the bar if your not eating ), D.B.A. depending on who is playing, Maison Bourbon ( a tourist trap with great jazz and EXPENSIVE drinks ), Jeramy Davenport at The Ritz. I'm sure I'm missing some.

for those who read all the threads, sorry, but i repeat my mantra: Dos Jefes Uptown Cigar Bar has free music and is surprisingly unsmokey the majority of the time. they have several 'smoke eaters' that suck the smoke up. but it does still have a smokers smell to it - like a tavern. other than the smoke its the kind of place you're looking for. intimate, nice little chairs and tables. full bar selection and nice wine list. reasonable prices. small food menu.
i've seen John Fohls there several times - my fav is when Nelson Lundig plays with him. Sunpie Barnes plays there. there are some jazz acts as well. the 'bands' tend to be 1-3 people.

Ritz Carlton - another great spot. we saw Ingrid there several years ago. no cover. pricey dinks - but really good ones.

Amen to that. I love Dos Jefes. Little Queenie played there regularly pre-Thing. We've seen Coco R. there too and Sunpie. Nice bar, food looks good (never had it), smoke if you want but I don't think there are a lot of cigar puffers anymore and I don't remember the smoke being an issue (well, not for me anyway). Nice courtyard too. Free and free parking and Frankie and Johnny's down the block and around the corner.

Oz is actually a really fun bar. My friend is gay and we always go dancing there at least one night. It has become more hetero than gay recently - but it is still considered a gay bar.

lol, I've been there a couple of times with my gay friend, too. That's where he taught me how to hold a cigarette properly, lol. He used to have a house in the Quarter. THAT was fun.

I bet that was fun .....I would like to live in the quarter - in a way - but I also am not fond of the crazy crowds of people all night long. although, I have been in some absolutely GORGEOUS homes and courtyards in the quarter.....goodness....hmmmmm.....
I think a trip to Pat O's before the crowds roll in for fest will be in order......

Kerry Irish Pub is a great place for free music. It's not just irish music (although not Jazz/Blues). We've seen Kim Carson there many times, but she's not on the schedule this fest. We plan on going there to see Ghost Town, who are a very fun country rock band. Not smoke free, but reasonable prices on the drinks!

Perfect place to go with the girls when you're looking for some really good tecno/dance music in the FQ ...(not of the jazz, blues, zydeco kind)

Donna's is not free, but it's cheap, and the brass bands blow the doors off the place. Go late. Every night. Yes.

The gf will be very pleased to here that. A couple months ago I took her there for Tab and I thought she was going to die and take me with her out of spite.
quirky little spot with quirky but versatile piano and vocals, sometimes more. You can take your drink out of the bar area into the comfy quiet seating in the lobby and still hear the music. Nice if you need an hour's break from loud crowds. Taxis always fast
to find here, ready to take you Uptown. The hotel puts out a peanut butter & jelly sandwich making spread until 11 PM, with milk, but that is for "guests". No cover, but of course you'll want to tip.
