So my final hurricane prep is dealing with the basement; not pretty. But at least that's where my turntable is, so I get to listen to my vinyl while I'm down there. Unless I have something specific in mind, I usually just pick the first album that my eye settles on when I look at my stacks/piles/crates filled with albums.

First up was Bonnie Raitt's Takin' My Time. I was using the shop vac to clear away a lot of accumulated dust, etc. for much of side one, but when I shut it off and heard the strains of "Cry Like A Rainstorm," it started to feel a bit ominous. Great song, but I hope it's just that...

Ok, going back down. Side two next.

Right now, I'm loving WKCR's birthday tribute to Lester Young. This will come in handy when the power kicks out and I'll only have a radio to ease my burden. Runs until noon tomorrow, when the Charlie Parker birthday tribute begins. http://www.wkcr.org

One of my favorite books to read to the kids when i taught K was one called Charlie Parker Played BeBop. What a great beat that book has to it. I was always partial to those books with a beat.

Back on topic: I've been listening to John Butler live at red rocks.

Here's a cool little something to come out of this weekend's storm, a collaborative reworking recording of "Goodnight Irene" by the Reverend John DeLore and 18 of his friends in various parts of the city. You can stream it or download it for free here.

Conceived, recorded & produced within a 10-hour span on Saturday, August 28, 2011. All the tracks on this song were recorded by 19 different individuals, in different rooms all across the 5 boroughs, as we sat waiting for Hurricane Irene to arrive over NYC.

I tweaked the lyrics of this classic Leadbelly song to fit the Big Apple, recorded a solo-acoustic version around 3pm, and then sent it out to a number of my talented musician friends. They recorded their individual parts, emailed them back to me, and I put the mix together.

As I write this, it's 2:03am, and I'm going to go sit down and have a beer on my stoop, and say, "Good Night, Irene."

Thanks to everyone who contributed their energy to making this song happen, and here's to Irene: have mercy on our fair city.

Onward, Upward...
--Rev. John DeLore

p.s. Thanks for not knocking the electricity out while we were putting this together.

LYRICS:
On Saturday night, she got angry.
She stormed up the Long Island Sound.
But still she had some tears to shed
So she headed for New York town.

Irene, good night. Irene, good night.
Good night, Irene. Good night, Irene.
I’ll see you in my dreams.

My baby lives in Manhattan,
But the trains are all shut down.
I’d swim across the East River.
But I fear that I might drown.

Irene, good night. Irene, good night.
Good night, Irene. Good night, Irene.
I’ll see you in my dreams.

Irene she rides the Cyclone,
She cries on Jersey shore awhile
She stops to play in Far Rockaway,
And dances on Staten Isle.

Irene, good night. Irene, good night.
Good night, Irene. Good night, Irene.
I’ll see you in my dreams.

Stop your rumbling, stop your cryin’
Stop your thunder don’t turn out the lights.
Go to sleep out on the Ocean
Can’t you hear us sing, Good Night.

Oh, Irene, good night. Irene, good night.
Good night, Irene. Good night, Irene.
I’ll see you in my dreams.

Ever heard of iron horse? they have a bluegrass album of all led zep tunes. it's similar to the picking on the dead, or phish bluegrass tribute albums. If you get a chance give it a spin, it's crazy how good the led zep tunes and lyrics work in a bluegrass setting.

A mix I made for Mrs. Lit for our 15th wedding anniversary, which was yesterday. Yep, I'm one of those geeks who was big on giving mixed tapes to the gals in whom I was interested; I decided to revive the tradition after taking many years off. I gave her a CD of the mix, but I like it so much myself that I keep listening to the playlist on my iPod:

“You Are The Best Thing” – Ray LaMontagne
“Take A Bullet” – Warren Haynes
“Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” – Jerry Garcia Band
“Throw My Love” – Carolyn Wonderland
“Love Has Something Else To Say” – Tedeschi Trucks Band
“I Like It Like That” – Rebirth Brass Band
“Then There Was You” – Trombone Shorty
“I’m In Something” – Margie Perez
“Things You Do To Me” – Martin Sexton
“Love Love Love” – Tristan Prettyman
“City Life” – Lynn Drury
“Dawned On Me” – Wilco
“First Impressions” – Schatzy
“Beautiful” – G. Love
“Expression Of Love” – Honey Island Swamp Band
“Next To Me” – Tab Benoit
“Good Enough” – Benjy Davis Project

Yeah, that's a good one. I predict you will soon be buying a Robert Parker album.

I'm listening to El Rego Et Ses Commandos, 'El Rego'

This is a compilation of West African funk from Theophile Do "El" Rego, who was considered to be the equivalent of Fela Kuti in Benin. The music is a little more breezy (sort of like music from Ghana) than Fela's intense afrobeat, and it also strikes me as a little funkier, at times.

Daptone Records just released this compilation today, and you can stream it here (http://www.npr.org/2011/10/16/141323428/first-listen-el-rego-et-ses-commandos-el-rego?ps=mh_fl#playlist)

Bob Dylan- Blood On The Tracks/ New York Sessions.

A must hear for any Dylan fan.

Bob thought the album was done, but after a few months he decided to re-record some tracks in Minneapolis using local musicians. His brother put together a band of mostly unknown musicians and they re-cut five songs. The original New York cuts are great and show a different side of the songs as well as different lyrics.

Most of this stuff has been released over the years in compilations and bootlegs, but worth a re-visit here and there.

This Blood On The Tracks - New York Sessions stuff is pretty interesting. I'm quite surprised at how mellow it is, especially Idiot Wind. Thank God, he opted to re-record these tracks in Minneapolis because these New York versions would not have become classics.

Faces, early Shawn Phillips. I was a huge SH fan back in the 70's and still enjoy his music. Shawn plays in Houston about every 12-18 months. He was in town last month. I met him two hours before the show and he added me to the guess list. Long story, kind of funny. In return, I helped him upload his equipment.

New Papa Grows Funk: "Needle In the Groove." A couple of nice grooves, more vocal tunes than on previous releases, I think (6 tracks out of 9, if memory serves.) After 2 listening's I still feel that PGF has yet to capture the magic of their live performances on CD. Also, the songwriting is, for me, a weak point- but then, I feel that way about pretty much all of my favorite funk bands. After hearing PGF live 3 times and Galactic live twice, I've decided that while I like PGF much better live than in the studio, I like Galactic much better in the studio than live.

Kind of fiddle-y, but in a good way. While not a concept recording, this has
a definite album feel. By the time, you get to track 6, "Gone," you definitely want to hear more. There is an excellent slide guitar solo on "Gone" by Emily Saliers that fits the tone of the song.

" Doesn't seem like it's too much to ask
For a reckless grin and a tank full of gas
Gone
They say you'll burn me like you're Sherman
With a big bad torch
And I don't know if I will ever belong
But I'm done here doing time

And I'm moving along
And I'm gone gone gone gone gone
Gone ..... " ~ Emily Saliers & Annie Roboff

Steve Cropper, Dedicated - A Salute to the 5 Royales. "Tribute" CDs can be hit or miss; this one is a clear hit imo. Great special guests, but it's Cropper's guitar that ultimately shines throughout.

And of course, this led me to:

The 5 Royales, Dedicated to You. Wow. I love "new" discoveries 50+ years after the fact. What a great album.

Good on Cropper for unearthing these gems and turning more people on to how great they are.

Finally got around to listening to that this morning. Holy crap is it tremendous. Provided some much-needed heat to help fuel my run on an otherwise frigid morning here. Before I knew it I was transported, and then the run was over. I almost didn't want the run to end. Almost.

Van Morrison, Enlightenment.

Thanks to an exchange with Canine Horror here the other day I was reminded of how great this album is. I have such a strong connection to this one for two reasons: (1) It is the last album that I purchased new on vinyl. I believe it is the last album he released on vinyl (at least in the states), and, for that reason, his next album, Hymns to the Silence, was the first CD I ever purchased; and (2) the album was released during my first year of law school, when I was living alone in a basement apartment (generously referred to as "garden view" because I had some small windows at ceiling level that looked out at the soil above) in Denver, where I didn't know a soul and had very little clue of what I had gotten myself into. Listening now, I can vividly remember it spinning on my turntable repeatedly then, with the sound coming out of my Alpine 6X9 car speakers that I rigged to use in the apartment. It sounds great now, but it was nothing short of therapeutic for me during some very trying times then (and many times since, because of that). Meditative, contemplative, almost hypnotic.

I owe this guy so much for what his music has done for me.

Ha ! After your post last week I just had to listen to it there and then. Unfortunately, it wasn't where it should have been with all the other Van cd's.
If I don't locate it soon, I will have to revert to Amazon for a copy of the remastered edition.
Along with Avalon Sunset, it's probably my favourite "late" Van.
Though, come to think of it, they're almost as old today, as were "Astral Weeks" and "Moondance" back at the end of the Eighties when these were released.
Perhaps we should consider them "middle-period" Van.

Some of my recent favourite listens include "Cadillac Jack", the new CD from the always imaginative Mighty Mo Rodgers.

Perhaps the most interesting new (ish) blues band out there, is the Kilborn Alley Band, and their latest cd "Four" is excellent, but still not as good as their live shows.
Check 'em out if you get the chance, they're a real deal blues band, no heavy rock and nearly all original material.

One of the very best of the 'old school' soul singers is (former New Orleanian, I believe) Mighty Sam McLain, and his latest CD "One Drop Is Plenty" is just a fabulous effort. I can't get it out of the car CD player, I just keep hitting repeat.
Incidentally, he is backed by a first rate Norwegian band led by Knut Reiersrud (who indeed shares title credit on the album) but listening to it, you'd never guess that they weren't from Memphis. A great record.

I liked that record a lot, too. Around the time it was out, I has a work assignment in London and I saw Van play at the Fleadh Festival in Finsbury Park, so I have a strong connection to it and London.

That was was quite a day as two other favorites, Nanci Griffith and Paul Brady, also played. The headliner over Van was The Pogues and it turned out to not be a very good idea to let Shane McGowan appear after a long day of pint quaffing. That was as drunk as I have ever seen a person on stage...it was appalling. Any ways, I digress.

I also REALLY like "Days Like This", which always seems to get shot down critically. I love that album.

That digression reminds me of the time I was at blues on the bluff in memphis. i said to my friend, biscuit, as we watched a wasted drunkass kenny brown perform, i'm here til he can't stand up. the very second i said it, his knees crumpled and he hit the stage. but only for a few seconds. he pulled himself back up and kept right on playing and singing.

Beach Boys 'Today', circa 1965.

When Brian Wilson started going deep. Check out 'Please Let Me Wonder' with New Orleans own Earl Palmer on drums.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kc4jR7ajbpw

It has been said that "Please Let Me Wonder" was the very first song that Brian Wilson wrote under the influence of marijuana. The song was first released on the band's 1965 album Today!. As a B-side, it peaked at a number 52 in Billboard and number 46 in Cash Box. The contemporary Gilbert Youth Survey conducted nationally in April 1965 placed this song at number 9 in its chart one week. Due to the lyrics, which are filled with a sense of longing and uncertainty, it is, in a sense, a contrasting piece to Wilson's "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)"

I was thinking of you this week, Kathie. Joe was giving me a YouTube schooling on Leonard Cohen. I was suprised at how many songs I actually knew. But man, what a genius he is! I sat and let it all wash over me for about an hour. Now I really want to see him live!

It was interesting hearing some of his older stuff when he sang more than spoke. Like Tom Waits, the years have changed his voice for sure.

Crowded House had the ability to create great pop singalong songs right from the start.
I saw them at the Pier Hotel in Frankston at one of their very early gigs, which we went to on an insider pass, when they were called the Mullanes or some thing like that. Which I believe may be the Finn boys Mothers maiden name, and back then in our delirious state on a Sunday night we thought we had seen the start of something, but did not realise how far they would go.

Now Jimi at woodstock I used to have the CD but that got knocked off, but have the DVD somewhere of the performance and will have to dig that up.

Been listening to Chimes of Freedom - an Amnesty International tribute album to Bob Dylan.

Haven't heard it all - there are 4 CDs in the set! Some great covers; some duds. A couple I really liked -- Seal & Jeff Beck doing Like a Rolling Stone; K'naan doing With God on Our Side.

Ruthie Foster, Let it Burn

Carolyn Wonderland, Peace Meal

Finally got around to picking up both of these last weekend and have been listening intermittently throughout the week. I really like them both.

I think Peace Meal is the best album Carolyn has done to date; imo it captures her better than her previous efforts.

I was mixed on whether to pick up Ruthie's latest, because I always approach covers albums with hesitation. But I after I heard her fine cover of CSN's "Long Time Gone" on some Sirius station a few weeks ago I decided to explore further. I guess I didn't really pay attention previously to how NOLA-centric this album is:

Ruthie Foster: vocals
George Porter, Jr.: electric bass
Ike Stubblefield: Hammond B3 organ & piano
Russell Batiste : drums
Dave Easley: pedal steel guitar
James Rivers: tenor sax
Special Guests: The Blind Boys of Alabama
& William Bell
Produced by John Chelew
Executive Producer: Charles Driebe
Recorded & Mixed by Wesley Fontenot
Recorded, Mixed & Mastered at Piety Street Recording New Orleans, LA

Tough to go wrong with that lineup! Not all the covers work as well for me, but I really like the sound of the whole album.

Sounds like a great combo. His production on the Ruthie album is excellent. Funny, while I was listening this morning--before I saw your post--there were a few occasions where I was thinking that even though I was not wild about the cover Ruthie chose, the production was really good and kept me interested in the song. And of course there are several excellent covers where everything comes together (after several listens, I think her cover of Los Lobos's "This Time" is probably my favorite on the album). Looking forward to hearing the Sonnier album.

After running through Bonnie Raitt's new release about a dozen times I got to jonesing for some more vintage Bonnie. For family dinner tonight we listened to Give It Up (so freaking great), and then this:

I can't emphasize enough how great this boot is. The family finally left me out on the deck (tremendous weather here in the Norheast) listening to "Thank You" repeatedly, with a great glass of wine.

If anyone has not picked this up yet, do yourself a favor and grab it. No matter who you are and what you like, it will be one of the best recordings you own.

Brass Radio Return (http://www.bronzeradioreturn.com/), Shake! Shake! Shake!

A friend/client is one of their managers; he gave me the CD when I saw him at the Merle Haggard show last night (for which he was the promoter).

Very nice sound. Dead ringers for Mumford & Sons on many tracks, with more of an indie sound on others.

Fans of Mumford & Sons, Avett Brothers, Civil Wars, etc. should definitely check them out. You can stream the album from the website.

The new Bonnie Raitt CD - Slipstream. Just fabulous!

I have to agree - I just listened to it for the first time

As it was stormin' like a beast earlier it looks like today is an 'inside' day - which means laundry, and all of that domestic stuff I just adore...
but to get through that trivia I figure some great music is in order.

This morning has been Dr. John's Locked Down
Bonnie's new one Slipstream

up-next
Jon Cleary's Occapella
Debbie Davis' It's not the year's it's the miles
Little Freddie King's Chasin' Tha Blues (which I like very much)
Galactic

and then who knows what the heck
