Been listening to the '71 Hill Auditorium recently, too.

Also listening to the Bob Schneider Frunk CDs I got at his Saxon Pub show in Austin last Monday. Always wanted to see Bob at the Saxon and it was fantastic. Great he records and sells the show immediately afterwards because there was a lot of new material I would have forgotten.

Also listening to "Under The Influence of Buck" by The Derailers, a great country band I saw at The Continental Club, as well.

New Orleans is home but Austin rocks!

Jack DeJohnette, Danilo Perez and John Patitucci, Music We Are (CD and DVD) - really great interactive jazz; DeJohnette remains one of the most creative drummers alive, and it's pretty cool hearing Patitucci, on six-string, doing some back-and-forth riffs with Perez (he overdubbed the six-string stuff after laying down the rhythm track on upright bass).

Also have been listening (again) to Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood, Out Louder - groovealicious!

Exquisite taste Mr Festngator! I was explaining to VWGirl last weekend how important that record was in the day, and still is for that matter. We vowed to break out the turntable some wintry day later this year and go through my vinyl collection (vinyl records that is) that's safely stashed in the basement in Tupperware bins. I know that's sacrilege to not listen to them, but we just don't have room for a turntable. On the other hand, I know it's being kept safe from any accidental basements floods....

Oh no Glinda -- that is tragic. I admit they were in boxes for about 20 years until someone clued me into the Tupperware idea and I went out and got the bins the next day. Before that though, I'd had a hot water tank burst and we were just lucky the water went the opposite direction from the boxes of the treasured albums.

Well right now I'm not listening to anything, taking a break from NBA playoffs (Go Nuggets!) But in 25 minutes Denver's KUVO starts their "good stuff" (Usually they play straight jazz, not my bag)
Sat. 5-7 pm:blues, usually DJed by Sammy Mayfield, old pro bluesman (Solomon Burke's bandleader, etc.)
7-9 pm: Classic R&B, also DJed by pro guitarist "Easy Bill"
Late nite Sat: "Mahogany Soul" which might be called "Urban Contemorary", then "A Funk Above the Rest", obviously funk...
Sunday starts with Gospel, then "Cancion Mexicana": Hispanic music from Colorado, New Mexico & Tejas
Then I forget the order but its "Origins, Orgy of Rhythm" which is a world beat, Afro/reggae etc. mixed bag
Next is "Latin con Jazz", just like it sounds, then Brazilian music, then back to jass... I switch to "Red Rooster Lounge", blues, forget the station
But MY ALL TIME FAVORITE station is "Louisiana Proud" KBON from Eunice, which has an awseome mix of cajun, zydeco, swamp pop, blues, & country (Mostly swamp pop)
Pretty sure all these stations stream online...
Back to NBA, Nuggets play New Orleans Hornets, great matchup (Split 2-2 regular season), hope to catch a game in N.O. midweek...

Anders' Fest set. Man, was that a killer set!

I take it that's a Jazz Fest Live recording from this year that you bought at Fest second weekend? They have only two sets listed from second weekend so far, and that's not one of them. If you have a set list handy to cut and paste (from your iTunes perhaps) could you post it please? No worries if you don't. It's just that they are painfully slow about putting up the set lists (if they ever do) for the live recordings, and I'd like to see it before I decide whether to purchase. Thanks.

My new purchases from LMF last weekend:

Marc Broussard, Keep Coming Back.

Jeremy Davenport, We'll Dance 'Til Dawn.

Corey Harris, blu.black.

Paul Sanchez, Farewell to Storyville.

I have listened to each of them several times through now (lots of driving this week), and highly recommend them all.

Marc's is all new originals, but many of them sound like old soul classics already. Great energy, classic MB sound.

Jeremy's is a very Sinatra/Harry Connick, Jr. sound, nicely updated. A very pleasant listen.

Corey's is about half reggae, and all good. Some strong black power lyrics at times, and very engaging throughout.

Paul is Paul. As he describes it, this is his "troubador" album; just him strumming his guitar and telling stories. I think it's more like his "Paul-in-your-living-room" album. Great songs, very stripped-down sound. Grows on you more and more with every listen.

Minor gripe here. Just getting around to downloading this disc on my iTunes and it doesn't show up with the disc info. So I check the iTunes store because I thought I had seen it there, which I confirmed. Except the iTunes version cost some $5.00 less than I paid and it has four additional live tracks that are not on the disc I bought at LMF. And it comes with a digital booklet, meaning you get all the liner notes and artwork from the iTunes version too.

I fully understand that it costs less to buy albums from iTunes; nonetheless, when possible I try to buy the physical disc even though it costs more because: (a) I still like holding the disc and reading the liner notes; (b) I prefer giving my money to great independent music stores like LMF rather than a major corporation; and (c) I believe--perhaps incorrectly--that the artists get more money when you purchase the disc than they do when you download digitally. But when I see that it not only costs less, but you get more product in a digital version, there is an actual disincentive to buy the disc. That strikes me as odd. But perhaps it is the wave of the future; or perhaps it has something to do with the fact that he is on a major label (Atlantic) and that's what they're doing now.

All I know is that I feel a bit burned by my decision to pay more, wait for my purchase and support a good local merchant. If you want to buy this disc, save your money and get more with the iTunes digital version.

Black Crowes - Before the Frost & Until the Freeze... fantastic stuff with Luther Dickinson fully ensconced at the lead spot, recorded at Levon's "barn" with Larry Campbell lending a hand with pedal steel, fiddle, etc. There's no way of knowing how much work the Crowes did to prepare the room, but I'll be a little miffed if Levon could've been recording all of his rambles at this level of fidelity and just didn't.

And apparently I must've accidentally pushed the way-back machine button, cuz I've been listening to Peter Rowan-Tony Rice Quartet, Jerry Acoustic Band tapes from '87, and newer'grass like John Cowan's Carla's Got a New Tattoo.

The room is acoustically perfect. I doubt they did anything special to it. It is a recording studio. There have been many great albums recorded there, going back to Muddy Waters' Woodstock Album (actually recorded in the former barn that burned down and has since been rebuilt). The Crowes had a residency there for a few weeks with the express purpose of recording all their shows to create this album. That allowed them to fuss with everything and pick-and-choose the best cuts. The Rambles are much more organic. What happens, happens, and they roll with it. I have some great recordings of some of the earlier Ramble sessions, but I don't think any others have been released in some time. But rest assured they are recording them all. I don't know whether they will have the same "level of fidelity" as the Crowes' disc, but I am guessing they are being saved up to be picked over and rolled out at some later date, perhaps once the Rambles are no more and there needs to be another money stream.

PS: Duende, your post did remind me that this had been released and I checked it out on iTunes this morning and bought it as a result. About half-way through on first listen and I like it a lot. Interesting marketing thing they've done with this one. Apparently when you buy the hard copy of the disc there are 11 songs, comprising the "Before the Frost..." part of the album; and there is a code in the packaging to be used on the band's (or record label's) website to download an additional eight tracks, which are supposed to comprise the "Until the Freeze" part. But when you buy it from iTunes you get 20 tracks (plus digital booklet) straight away for $9.99. Here again, it looks like it's increasingly the case that one needs to research the options beforehand in order to make the best purchase decisions. Boy, I sure do miss the simpler days of vinyl.

me too! now, would you come over and help me organize all these hundreds of discs laying around???

yeah - after I get to organizing mine. I have a dream that one day I will come home and the organization fairy would have visited and put all of my Cds, records, tapes etc. into a beautiful storage unit, organized alphabetically, in gorgeous baskets with labels and dividers. The fairy will then dusty, mop and vacuum everything and my place will look like something from the pages of architectural digest.

that damned organization fairy keeps getting lost on the way to my house. sigh.

We never talk about Little Steven's Underground Garage here, but that dude has the most amazing encyclopedic knowledge of r 'n r, never fails to amaze me. He did an awesome show show last year dedicated to The Stomp. Great sh*t!

Little Steven's Underground Garage is my favorite sunday night program. We listen to it on the radio on Sunday nights in the summer on our drive back home. I agree - he has an incredible knowledge of rock n roll....and his shows are always interesting.

Well I'm part of the way there--my CDs are in alphabetical order in bookshelves (where I have been informed they will not be allowed to stay much longer because they take up an entire wall of one room and are bursting out of the shelves). The overflow/in progress piles are down to five stacks (obscuring framed pictures and other displayed items) containing only about 100 CDs. So I've got that going for me...

Without A Sound
I have not heard it for a long time and its great.
Lots of wailing guitar to motivate me to pack my bags again,as I have only been home for 2 days.
I have been told that their recent reformation album, with Lou Barlow back in the fold I think, is also quite good.

Cheers;)

I saw them this summer in Central Park, (they were the last free Summerstage show this year) and they were certainly on! J Mascis can play a bit as Steeleye said and boy are they LOUD! (That's a good thing) Mascis alone was surrounded by about 4 Marshall stacks.

A fine show.

I thought I'd leave that little tidbit out, since it's a personal discovery. :) The coolest thing about the disc-in-hand is the presentation - the best I've seen in years, from the watercolor Smokey Mountains artwork on the cardboard cover to the CD envelope inside the cover, to the 45 rpm-like CD itself... just beautiful! I downloaded the FLAC version of Until The Freeze, so I got the PDF CD booklet, notes, lyrics. I'd offer to email it (surely THAT's not piracy), but it's 18 MB!

I just downloaded Old & In The Way Breakdown this morning and no thrill of poring over the CD booklet (my pet peeve about iTunes).

Flicking between football and baseball, whilst listening to Olympia Brass Band: Down by the Riverside.

And I have Cayenne Ya Hear Me Now?, an awesome promotional compilation disc that a friend gave me in NOLA a few years back, stuck in the CD player of my car. If you're gonna have a CD stuck in your CD player, this is one of them. It's a LMC and NOMCA release promoting signed and unsigned New Orleans and Louisiana artists. I think it came out 2006, with PGF, Da Bone, LHC, JC & the AMG, Kermit, Ingrid Lucia, Christian Serpas & GT, Bud Tower, Jim McCormick/Susan Cowsill...

Just put on a bootleg I downloaded recently of a 1979 Graham Parker & The Rumour concert in Denver. An edited version was broadcast on radio back then and I had a cassette I made off the air, but great to hear the whole thing in very clean sounds.

And, for the NOLA connection, of course that's Bob Andrews on keyboards!

The Felice Brothers (revisiting the first one)
The Avett Brothers (latest one, I and Love and You, fantastic!)
The Pernice Brothers (Live a Little)
Joe Pernice It Feels So Good When I Stop, highly recommended. A companion record of 70s/80s covers to his novel of the same name.
Son Volt American Central Dust, which has a song, "Pushed Too Far", that begins with this verse:

Memories of the Crescent City
Wednesday nights at the Rock n Bowl
On the bandstand there's Snooks and guitar
Pure gasoline for the soul

YYR. Her maturity for her age (23) is incredible imo, in terms of her playing, songwriting and singing. I've listened all the way through a few times now and have been more impressed each time. There is a good range of songs too; some straight-ahead blues and some that have a slower burn, like some of Bonnie's and Sue Tedeschi's stuff. She's definitely got some top-notch production behind her too. Looking forward to seeing her at CFF and curious to see how she matures over the years.

It's funny you say this; I was just thinking of "brother" bands the other day after reading a post by Belle where she mentioned the Felice Brothers, which made me think of the Avett Brothers, and then I tried to think about all the "brother" bands (i.e., with "brothers" in the name of the band) I could name off the top of my head, starting with the ones in my collection. Here's what I came up with:

Felice Brothers
Avett Brothers
Pernice Brothers
Wood Brothers
Allman Brothers
Neville Brothers
Campbell Brothers
Clancy Brothers
Holmes Brothers
Blues Brothers
Flying Burrito Brothers
Everly Brothers
Chemical Brothers
Isley Brothers
Righteous Brothers
Doobie Brothers
Jonas Brothers (I want to be clear that they are NOT in my collection--but my daughters do have at least one CD)
Naked Brothers (" ")
Chambers Brothers
Bacon Brothers
Gatlin Brothers
Statler Brothers
Vaughn Brothers

Any other brothers?

Glad you're digging it. Keep your eye out for their Eponymous Debut, which is my favorite record of theirs. Great cover of "Lil' Liza Jane," as well as some fine originals, including "Roll With It, We're Ready," of my faves. The song "All That" and "All That Reprise" on this release also tell the story of the band and its members, and it's pretty funny.

Yeah, Davis was called DJ Davis for a long time when he had a show on WWOZ. He is quite a character.

This article about the series, now being filmed, was in the Times-Picayune this week:

I don't know the specific Tinariwen track you mention but their new CD continues and refines the sound they have always had but even richer and moodier this time out.

Listening to this very fine DVD off of Dime

Compilation of 33 Festival de Jazz de Vitoria - 12-18 August 2009 Pro-Shot DVD (http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=262844)

Includes Pat Metheney & Charlie Haden, Diego Amador Trio with Javier Colina, Stefano Di Battista Quartet, a nice taste of SMV (Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten), Madeleine Peyroux, a couple of Allen Toussaint gems, and ends with Wynton Marsalis & Jalco ...with tap-dancing and Flamenco going at it.

A torrent for the full Toussaint set was previously posted (http://www.nojazzfest.com/chat/showthread.php?p=278395&highlight=de+Jazz#post278395) and I might get it too after watching the high quality selections in this compilation

Tony Joe White, The Best of Tony Joe White.

Wow, really great stuff. Like a cross between Bobby Charles and Willis Alan Ramsey, and that's saying something because they were/are two of the finest singer-songwriters imo. I knew the great song “Polk Salad Annie” but was totally unfamiliar with the rest of his work, including the fact that he wrote “Rainy Night in Georgia.” This was a total impulse purchase at LMF this weekend, and one that I owe entirely to their listening station. The sleeper pick in the stack of discs that I purchased with the money I had earmarked for a ticket to the Saints game (until I realized that I would need to spend much more than I wanted, and still run a serious risk of getting a counterfeit).

Here’s the rest of the excellent bunch, which I’ve been shuffling through since my return on Monday:

Snooks Eaglin, The Way It Is. I don’t know why I’ve held off on getting this until now. Some great tracks, with an excellent band behind him. I’m glad I got it now; the guy at LMF told me that this is one of the last few they have from their last order, and when these are gone it ain’t coming back, because his widow apparently is not interested in printing any more for some reason (which of course makes me wonder whether THR can play a role in keeping this out there…).

Zachary Richard, Last Kiss. Wow, how/why did I hold off on this one until now? I read and heard all the great reviews, but somehow it never made it into my stack of purchases. What a great album. I know many folks prefer his other material, but I like this far better than anything I’ve ever heard from him.

Susan Cowsill Band, Covered In Vinyl, Vol. 2. Much better recording quality than Vol. 1. Not my favorite song selections, but some nice covers from sessions where the band did the Beatles, Linda Ronstadt, Aerosmith, Sly & the Family Stone, Lou Reed, Bowie and Springsteen.

Troy Andrews Quintet, The End of the Beginning. Very good straight-ahead jazz covers, with some great guests, like John Boutte delivering nice vocals on a very enjoyable read on “Reet Petite.” Thanks to Baconwrapped (I think?) for the heads up on this disc in one of his posts a few weeks ago.

To Be Continued Brass Band, Modern Times. My favorite new brass band. Well new to me at least. Thanks to PaulC and the others who saw them in the fall for tipping us off on these guys, and the LMF listening station for confirming what they heard. Great, polyphonic, rhythmic sounds. Something fresh about it for some reason I can’t put my finger on. Nice mix of interesting covers and originals (like “Ray Nagin” and “Blame it on the Booze”). Can’t wait to see them live.

The Gaturs, Wasted. A good friend (who is also a lurker here) asked me to pick this up, and I’m glad I did. Funk/soul classic from Willie Tee; a pre-cursor to what he would develop with the Wild Magnolias. A few schlocky tunes, but mostly irresistible funky soul for which he is famous.

The Campbell Brothers, Rallytime! Live in New Orleans. I have their other live recording, but after hearing all the raves about this show I had to pick this one up. And it does not disappoint, as any of you who saw these shows can attest.

Los Po-Boy-Citos, New Orleans Latin Soul. Every time I hear a cut from these guys on WWOZ I love it, so I finally bought the disc. It is really a great sound imo. Los Lobos meets New Orleans. A bit like the Iguanas, but different. A little more jazzy/groovy in spots. I’m loving this addition to my collection.

Nova Nola, Wetland. This is the Masakowski family project. A Brazilian jazz quintet. Not normally my favorite sound, but I was intrigued when I read about them in Offbeat last summer. And I was entranced when I caught the last song of their set at the Best of the Beat this weekend—an interesting cover of the Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood.” And you would have been too if you saw it, and then saw Sasha dancing afterwards during the MyNameIsJohnMichael set…

Krown, Washington, Batiste, Live at the Maple Leaf. Well we know these guys are great, and the album won an award at the Best of the Beat. And then Runaround Al told me that the album is great. So I bought it. And I’m glad I did. It’s exactly what you’d think it would be, and that’s a good thing.

An old mate of mine has promoted Tony Joe down here many times and he always puts on a good show.Every time I have seen him it has just been him and a drummer, like in the Blues Tent at Jazzfest a couple of years back, and the sound that only 2 of them pump out is amazing.Having said that I would love to see him with a full band one day.
He is a good guy to boot, and talks off stage just how you would imagine.
At a festival in Melbourne a few years ago, after his gig he sat down at a little card table with a bottle of Red Wine and signed CDs and stuff for people, for as long as they wanted to keep coming up
I have a great photo of TJW doing an instore at LMF in 2002.It is a pity that I dont have the tech savy to post it.;)

Good to know Gards. Would love to see him live--especially in a setting like an LMF in-store. And I was at Fest for the whole week in 2002 too, so I missed a great opportunity for that.

On another note, I am now really digging the Troy Andrews Quintet album I picked up last weekend. Very impressed with the quality and maturity in every tune I've heard from it. Quite different from any of his other recordings. I like his work with Orleans Ave. and the way he has grown as a live performer, but I hope he does more releases like The End of the Beginning too, because he's excellent in that mode as well. The sky is the limit for Shorty if he keeps his head on straight.

i gave it a listen and it was aiiight...i need to give it a "car listen" before i give my final judgement...i am a big fan of NOLA bounce and sissy bounce, so it was nice to see a bunch of the bounce MCs on the record...

for those of you unfamiliar with new orleans bounce its a hiphop genre that is all new orleans...i encourage everyone to peep out some juvenile and manny fresh at congosquare during second weekend...they are sure to get the local crowd poppin'. sissy bounce is a subgenre of that where the rappers are gay and/or transvestites who sing booty songs...

its quite a trip, and despite what you might expect it makes the ladies go bananas.

"Corinne Died on the Battlefield." It is one of six songs that are only available on the "Deluxe" version of the album. It is a great album, but I can't for the life of me imagine why they didn't just make one version with all the songs. I'd like to know who the target consumer is for the "standard" version that is missing these six excellent tracks for all of around 50 cents apiece.

It is a great album, but I can't for the life of me imagine why they didn't just make one version with all the songs. I'd like to know who the target consumer is for the "standard" version that is missing these six excellent tracks for all of around 50 cents apiece.

Thanks Lit... beat me to the punch again :) !

I can't answer your question definitively, but would suggest that the Pres. Hall folks are extremely savvy these days when it comes to marketing/promoting/packaging their product.
In this instance the Waits tracks are probably one of the records biggest selling points, as much as anything for the sheer novelty value.
So it might make commercial sense to screw a few extra $ out of that market.

I haven't heard the other "bonus" tracks. Are the Seeger tracks in the same vein as his cut on the 'main' album ? That one is probably my least favourite number on the whole record.

Yes, the Seeger cuts are in a similar vein. There are some songs I like better than others, but unlike, say, the new Galactic album, there are no cuts on this album (both main and "bonus") that I wouldn't want to have. I think it is all great, some greater than others, but none unpleasant imo.

I would say my early contenders for album of the year 2010 would be the Preservation Hall CD, the new Johnny Cash CD, and Susan Cowsill's "Lighthouse."

Yeah, Lit. I must say that i was pleasantly surprised at the consistently high level of the tracks featuring artists that I had never previously come across.
The way these "collaborative" efforts usually work is there are a few "legendary" names, alongside a few "flavour-of-the-month" artists. This has certainly been the case with many of the Blues duets albums by the likes of Buddy Guy, B.B King and John Lee Hooker for example.
Years later you find yourself asking "how the hell did xyz get onto this album" ?
On the Pres. Hall cd, some of my favourite tracks are by the likes of Corey Chisel (Who, he???) and Paulo Nuttini (in spite of his eccentric vocalisations).
But the Waits tracks are amazing, and I'm hoping against hope, that the great man might just show up for a special guest spot at one of their shows.
It might just happen.

Also remember that the Preservation Hall Jazz Band is playing at LMF at 7 PM 5/3, right after the Threadhead Monday LMF lineup...

Chris, Surely you haven't forgotten that you will be representing at DBA for the Threadhead Records Showcase at that exact same time...

I'm trying to get Paul to delay starting that show for about 45 minutes or so... :)

You mean -- a show in New Orleans might start late??
