Oooh the last hour is always the worst! The cd is HOT! He did an instore where I work about a month and a half ago. Just him and his electric bass and the drummer from the CD with his HUGE drum kit. 45 minutes of them just going at it. It was amazing.

The Great Debaters soundtrack. Thanks AtPontchartrain, it was your thread that got me to add it to my promo pile from work. REALLY good!!! :)
On a related note, I don't know if there is a soundtrack cd yet, but the music and the band in John Sayles new movie Honeydrippers is amazing especially a young Texas guitar player Gary Clark Jr. who also stars in the movie. The house band did a short tour this summer and I was lucky enough to see em in NYC. Should of made my list of best shows of 2007. Here's a link to a page from the movie sight where you can read about the band and if you click on the names you can see clips from the NYC show.

Love ol Hubert ! Right now, Kate Campbell - Twang On A Wire. She's a great roots type singer from Mississippi now in Nashville. Has a bunch of records out, I just got this one it's about 5 years old. Aside from the title tune, it's her singing the songs she learned to play guitar and sing to when she was a teen, country songs sung by women from the 70's. Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Emmylou, Jeanne C Riley, Tanya Tucker, Loretta Lynn. Great versions with a stripped down band. Her last album 'For The Living of These Days' is also wonderful. She's really good, check it and her out.

The Midnight Band was incredible live...but this is one live album that doesn't short change the experience. YYR, it's a time tunnel right back to long ago times, some of which I, personally, was fortunate to survive.
I waited for years for Gil's stuff to make it to CD as I worn out my double LP out decades out. The wait was worth it, (although "Bridges" has not not been released), because most of the other released albums like Winter in America and The First Minute of a New Day include some other live gems and good stuff from the Archives that I'd never heard.
Although Brian is still active, Gil has been in and out of prison for years. I heard last week that his voice is also ruined and that is shame. I've always hoped to catch them one more time

Not sure I ever thought of them as prog rock...they seemed to me a bit more like an 80's hair band who could actually play their instruments. But I have some old vinyl by them that I'll dig out to revisit.
Blasphemy. 80's hair band? Are you kidding me? You apparently have a different band or different music in mind.
From progarchives dot com (your ultimate prog rock resource), "MARILLION is a progressive rock band originating from United Kingdom that plays mostly Neo Progressive music."
They are often cited as the orginators of Neo-progressive rock. Frequent comparisons are made to Pink Floyd, early Peter Gabriel Genesis and YES. I don't think any of those comparisons are entirely accurate as I have never encountered any other music that captures what Marillion does. Their concept albums are always my favorites...they are like stories set to music.

Willie Nelson - Moment Of Forever His new one......wow it's really good. Kenny Chesney helps out and he does a fine version of Randy Newman's 'Louisiana' and Dylan's 'Gotta Serve Somebody'.
Also a nice version of Dave Matthews' 'Gravedigger'.

Besides the James McMurtry that I raved about on it's own thread, another of my favorites from this year so far. Jim Lauderdale & The Dream Players - Honey Songs. He's one of the best songwriters around and get the Dream Players......helping out on harmony vocals, Emmylou, Buddy Miller, Patty Loveless. And the band........James Burton, Al Perkins, Garry Tallent, and from Elvis' 70's band (besides James Burton) Ron Tutt on drums and Glen D Hardin on piano.
Nice little band.

I been warped by the rain, driven by the snow
I'm drunk and dirty don't ya know, and I'm still, willin'
Out on the road late at night, Seen my pretty Alice in every head light
Alice, Dallas Alice
I've been from Tuscon to Tucumcari
Tehachapi to Tonapah
Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made
Driven the back roads so I wouldn't get weighed
And if you give me: weed, whites, and wine
And you show me a sign
I'll be willin', to be movin'
I've been kicked by the wind, robbed by the sleet
Had my head stoved in, but I'm still on my feet and I'm still... willin'
Now I smuggled some smokes and folks from Mexico
Baked by the sun, every time I go to Mexico, and I'm still
And I been from Tuscon to Tucumcari
Tehachapi to Tonapah
Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made
Driven the back roads so I wouldn't get weighed
And if you give me: weed, whites, and wine

For the last couple of weeks, I've been listening to Shamarr's set from Fest that I bought at the fairgrounds, Exit to Mystery St., John Boutte's new one and a couple that Stynger just sent me; all in continuous rotation. :)
Drive-by Truckers, Dirty South and Brighter than Creation's Dark. And Van's new disc, Keep it Simple. Absolutely love the Drive-by Truckers' discs and will be buying more from them. They are somewhat of a new discovery for me, and I realize that I am late to that party, but am very happy to have found them. Upon first few listens, I think Van's new disc is pretty lame and tired. I had high hopes after Magic Time a few years ago, which I really liked and thought was somewhat of a return to great form for him. Pretty disappointed with this new one so far though.

So her solo stuff is good enough to recommend? I met her some 20 years ago when I was fortunate to attend one of JT's private rehearsals in a barn on Martha's Vineyard before he and the band were going out on their summer tour in support of his then recently-released Never Die Young. When James introduced her to me he was typically self-deprecating, noting that she was a recording artist in her own right, and that I could find both of their albums in the bargain bin at the record stores. I think I freaked her out a bit when I told her that I recognized her from the group photo on the inside sleeve of his In the Pocket album and recalled exactly where she was in the photo. I recall that she was very nice nonetheless. I never checked out her solo stuff though. Is the album you listed the one that you would recommend? Any others?

Always thought she had a great voice as one of that great group of back-up singers for James. It's cool that you got to meet her! It must have made you melt, 'cos she's also kinda hot.
I like her solo stuff. It's not earth-shattering or some new type of music you've never heard. If you like a great sultry female voice, this is for you. Her first album has a great version of 'Ooh Child' that's worth the price. The title of that album is "Just a Stone's Throw Away". I'm less enamored with her second, but it's still okay. It's called "Wild Child". I'm not sure it's on any CD other than the Japanese pressing I have. "That's the Way It Is" is probably the most balanced of all her works. Her version of "Into the Mystic" is enough to..... Well anyway, let's just say I like it.

Patiently I've waited, baby, waited just for you
& I ain't gonna move & act till you do what you're supposed to do
You got your thing together, & I can't wait too
& that's the very reason I'm stickin' here with you
(Give it up to give it up)

(You can dig it, to give it up)
Yeah, make me shout
(Give it to me! Give it to me! Give it to me!)
(Give it up to give it up)
Givin' up takes so long

Thanks Stax. I've always liked her voice too, and I like the originals of those tunes so I'll check out her covers of them.
She was very cool to meet. For some reason I remember that we talked about skiing. She was definitely attractive, but the funny thing is I recall thinking that she looked a lot older, and much different, than the photo of her from the inside sleeve of In the Pocket (I remembered her from the photo primarily because there was a name/figure chart included with the photo, and I remembered the position of the figure associated with her name). I was a college student at the time, bartending and running around on the beaches, and she looked like an "older woman"--albeit a very attractive one, like a friend's hot mom. In short, I was looking for girls, and she was a very experienced woman for whom I would have been mere child's play. In retrospect, I was pretty much clueless.

Carla Olson & Mick Taylor - Too Hot For Snakes plus. Carla used to be in a band called The Textones (anybody remember them), a great little roots rock n roll band that got great press and not many sales. She met Mick Taylor after that and her liner notes kind of sum it up.
"Mick and I knew we wanted a particular sound and attitude: loud, rockin', tough, bluesy. So we assembled a great band of friends and chose a combination of songs including a few of Mick's plus some Rolling Stones numbers as well. We rehearsed for a week, played a warm up gig out of town and then cut the album in one night at the Roxy."
She describes it well, her songs rock, and from the Stones they do 'Silver Train', 'You Gotta Move' and a #$%%ing KILLER version of 'Sway'. And one of the friends in the band is the wonderful Ian McLagan on keyboards. Good stuff.

Hey Scoop and Sissy....there's an excellent interview with Ry at our local public radio station CKUA at www.ckua.com. Holger Petersen from Stony Plain Records and host of "Natch'l Blues" interviews Ry over the course of his two hour show with some tunes from I, Flathead included. Go to www.ckua.com and click on the audio archives icon in the top right corner. It sounded to me like Ry got right into this, as did Holger...fascinating stuff...
And I have lots of Ry vinyl to dust off too! ;)
Here's the description:
On the July 5th, 2008 edition of Natch'l Blues, host Holger Petersen presented an interview he'd recorded with Ry Cooder in his Santa Monica, California studio. In a wide ranging interview, Holger also played music from various aspects of Cooder's career, with an emphasis on the new disc I, Flathead. The feature stretched over the two hours of Natch'l Blues, and is presented here in two parts.

I sold alot of mine back in my no money days.....oh wait, I'm STILL in my no money days! But I still have alot of good stuff. Set up that turntable VW you'll have a blast when you do. Just holding the damn things in your hand while you're listening is neat.
I too loved Spooky Tooth and Gary Wright up to Dream Weaver. His first couple of solo albums are real good.
It's one of those things I am saving for "when I am done working"...when's that gonna be!!!!??????

Well, in my case I'd say the answer is when I'm dead. Oy!
More vinyl tonight. One the THE great unsung American rock n roll records. Edgar Winter's White Trash. R n B, funk, blues, gospel, rock n roll, this baby has it all, and besides Tower of Power, the White Trash horns are probably the best. Got it as a Christmas present when I was a young Scoop in 71 from one my brothers, wore it out and replaced it. What a $%%ing record. :D

For those of you who don't know Scrapomatic is the Mike Mattison and Paul Olsen's blues and roots band. Many of you will recognize Mike as the lead singer of the Derek Trucks band. Mike has an amazing voice and their third album may be their best.

I've been filling up on world music all summer. This AM I'm listening to three new Putamayo discs I got from Amazon. Acoustic Brazil is beautiful music for early mornings in the office. Gypsy Groove is much more upbeat and multi-layered. Sort of like funky klezmer music. Next up: New Orleans Christmas(yup, it's that time again).

Fine choices if I do say so myself. Which Ian and which Nick Lowe. Inquiring minds want to know. And be sure to let me know what you think of the GP.
Package arrived yesterday. Not loving the Nick Lowe, but today enjoyed Ian (Shrunken Heads). Haven't heard him since the Schitzo album but like what I'm hearing. GP tomorrow.

Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters - Surrounded By Love. One of my favorite guitar players. Sort of disappeared, although I think he came out with a new one recently. Had the pleasure of seeing him a bunch of times and he could just break your heart or put the biggest grin on your face with his playing, sometimes at the same time! Would go from a straight blues to doing an arrangement of a John Coltrane song.
This one also has two bonus live tracks recorded at Tips in 1988.

The Flying Burrito Brothers, Hot Burrito! Anthology 1969 - 72.
I saw that Mac was pining away for his copy of Burrito Deluxe in an old post that PC resurrected, so I figured I'd try to hunt down some Flying Burrito Brothers on disc to burn and send to him, as I only had it on vinyl. I found this great anthology of their first three albums, including Burrito Deluxe, and I can't believe how tremendous it is. I had almost forgotten how essential Gram Parsons was to pioneering the entire genre of country-rock. While I was at it, I also updated from vinyl to disc for the Byrd's Sweetheart of the Rodeo, and I've been listening to both for days now. Mac will have them soon too, along with some others. I can't wait to thank him for encouraging me to rediscover how great The Flying Burrito Brothers, and especially Gram Parsons, were. Amazing that it was almost four decades ago that he blazed the trail for the entire genre in which bands like Wilco are only now gaining wide recognition.

I tried it recently with a VERY economical usb turntable that a friend purchased for about $100. The sound was not the quality level that a serious music collector would approve of - but I have to tell you - I was very ,very impressed with the quality and ease of operation at that cost.

Kinda spooky, considering some recent posts on the bored.
Where were you when it blew from every direction
Where were you when the promise was made
To return and rebuild
To restore to its people
The city that gave us the first American music
The true inspiration and the freedom to use it
Where will we find it again if we lose it
And where will we be
If we ever cease to love
If we ever cease to love
