Bob Dylan - The Bootleg Series Vol. 4: Live 1966

The infamous gig in England when Dylan had first gone electric. An audience member yelled out "Judas". To which Dylan replied to the audience member "I don't believe you". And even better turned to the band and said......

"Play f*&king loud!"

Make it Funky DVD on the Boise system on the new car. It's a Man'sWorld from the Grammy's

Speaking of Make It Funky, I don't know if everyone is aware but there is also an HD-DVD/DVD hybrid (it plays on both HDDVD players or regular DVD players) called the New Orleans Concert-The Music of America's Soul. It's the Make It Funky show with performances not on the Make It Funky DVD. Joss Stone, Henry Butler, Art Neville, Aaron Neville.......here's the description.

Captured in state of the art High Definition and mastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, New Orleans Concert ignites a massive celebration of Big Easy music past and present - Joss Stone, Bonnie Raitt and Keith Richards join a complete cast of New Orleans legends to create this extraordinary musical extravaganza.

Track Listing

1. "It's Raining" - Irma Thomas & Allen Toussaint
2. "Dirty Man" - Joss Stone
3. "Amazing Grace" - Aaron Neville
4. "Tipitina" - Allen Toussaint & Jon Cleary
5. "Chapel Of Love" - The Dixie Cups
6. "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" - Lloyd Price
7. "Southern Nights" - Allen Toussaint
8. "What Is Success" - Bonnie Raitt
9. "Rip It Up" - Ivan Neville & Earl Palmer
10. "Barefootin'" - Walter Washington with Poppa Funk's Boys
11. "Land of 1000 Dances" - Walter Washington with Poppa Funk's Boys
12. "I'm Ready" - Keith Richards
13. "Come On" - Snooks Eaglin & George Porter Jr.
14. "I Hear You Knockin'" - Snooks Eaglin
15. "Ohh Wee Baby" - Art Neville with Steve Jordan
16. "Trick Bag" - Aaron Neville
17. "Yellow Moon" - Neville Brothers Band
18. "Fire On The Bayou" - Neville Brothers Band
19. "Hey Pocky Way" - Ensemble

Bonus Tracks
1. "Hey Little Girl" - Henry Butler
2. "Feet Can't Fail Me Now" - Dirty Dozen Band

3. "Bah Duey Duey" - Big Sam's Funky Nation
4. "Sew, Sew, Sew" - Monk Boudreaux And The Mardi Gras Indians

You like Gang of Four, Scoop? Everyone I've ever played that record for has liked it. I thought it would be one of those recordings that was great but would wallow in obscurity... until Rolling Stone magazine had it listed in their top 100 all-time list.

I really liked 'Entertainment when it came out.......then kinda forgot all about it and them for that matter. Got a Gang of Four sampler at work last year covering their career and was like whoa!! How could I forget them.

Right now, Burnside Exploration - The Record. Just bought this today and it smokes. They're playing this year so go see them. Here's who they are from their website www.burnsideexploration.net

Burnside Exploration has quite literally been a musical exploration of sorts for Garry and Cedric Burnside.* As long as these Burnsides can remember the sounds of the North Mississippi Hill Country Blues has been resonating in their ears.* It is as much a part of their upbringing as is the English language.* Garry is the youngest son of the legendary R.L. Burnside and Cedric is Garry's nephew and R.L.'s grandson.* The two have been inseparable their entire lives as they are only two years apart.

The two began playing together when Garry was 6 and Cedric was 4.* Then they were 13 and 11, they started playing the Juke Joint circuit together with Junior Kimbrough and have done so every weekend since.* Junior would pick Garry up for the gigs and act as his guardian as Garry was far too young to be on his own.* Granddaddy R.L. would do the same with Ced.

The Record is a modern interpretation of the grooves that carried their family through life - a hybrid of the old Mississippi Hill Country Blues and some good, solid R&B and Rock & Roll.* The diversity of the people who appreciate Burnside Exploration is a tribute to the power of the Hill Country Blues and Garry & Ced's own signature sound.* They have already played prominent Blues Festivals and well attended shows on the Jam Band Circuit with bands such as Widespread Panic and the North Mississippi All Stars.* Garry played with the All Stars for some time as did his brother Duwayne (an accomplished solo artist now.)

Garry says "People could relate to my Dad's music and Junior's music".* Cedric adds "We do the same style of music, but we represent the younger generation" - Young Hill Country Blues.* I try to write music about every day life and I want people to relate to it - if they can't relate to it, I hope they can at least groove to it."

This mission is accomplished by The Record.

I'm not a big metalhead but I LUV my Motorhead! I always have to laugh when I pull this cd out and note that they made a point to print the lyrics. I'm glad they did as now I can fully appreciate the emotional complexities expressed in the words of such sensitve classics as 'Fast and Loose', 'Dirty Love', 'Jailbait' and of course 'Love Me Like A Reptile'. : )

One of my favorite B.B King albums - Completely Well. 'The Thrill Is Gone', 'Confessin' The Blues, 'Keys To The Kingdom', and the best 'Cryin Won't Help You Now' where they keep the tape rolling and it turns into about a fifteen minute jam. It finally falls apart and you hear B.B. go "Damn, what are y'all trying to kill me?"

As usual Scoop, you are absolutely right. I got to see Schenker and UFO years ago in front of about 100 people at the old Paramount Theatre in Wilkes-Barre. I was afraid he wouldn't come out as he's notoriously tempramental. But he did and he put on an amazing show.

The Pine Leaf Boys are incredible live. After reading your post, I had to go in search of something by them and found that their live download page (http://www.pineleafboys.com/live.html)has a nice live version of Michael Doucet's Zydeco Gris Gris (http://www.pineleafboys.com/zydecogrisgris.mp3) that brings a lot of memories from last year's set at Fais Do Do.

In fact, now I see that as I write this they are playing as part of a "smack down" vs The Red Stick Ramblers at Grant Street Music Hall in Lafeyette.
I'll bet everyone there wants to be nowhere else tonight.

apparently they are more of an NYC phenomenon, but should anyone ever get the opportunity, do check out Lez Zeppelin - the leading all-female Zeppelin tribute band. I kid you not, as the t-shirt (which I proudly purchased & wear & I'm a guy) proclaims, "All Girls, All Zeppelin."

the guitarist is out of control. she had me at the double-necked Gibson and "Immigrant Song" but when she brought out the bow I was hooked.

and the theremin was a knockout...

You come for the gimmick, you STAY for the shocking amount of talent.

looks like their web site is down, but their myspace page hints at a nationwide tour after a European jaunt. keep an eye out:

Well, well, well, I miss RL.

Amen, amen... Met him one night here in NYC when he played The Cooler, a great club that no longer exists. Got its name as it was in the Meatpacking District and used to be an actual giant industrial meat cooler. Still had hooks hanging from the ceiling.

went to see RL play with some friends. went to the bar to get beers for everyone, but my hands were overloaded. tried to carry all of them back, turned around, bumped into some tall guy, spilled beer all over his beautiful suede coat. that guy?

David Byrne.

I looked up at him and said, "There's nothing I can say right now. Very sorry." and ran off. oops.

Great RL show. I was wearing a "New Orleans Preservation Hall" baseball cap and during the last song was waving my hand back and forth, in the front row, and I guess it must have looked like I was pointing at my hat because RL stopped the song and said, "What man? You wanna trade?"

Everyone screamed, I clearly nodded yes with a big sh*t-eating grin, and we traded hats. then he finished the song and the place went nuts.

So, despite my Talking Head incident, I was on Cloud 9... We're drinking pretty heavily and I notice the place is emptying out. looking around, I can almost see backstage. so, fueled with the advice of good ol' Uncle Jack Daniels, I ripped a poster off the wall, jumped up on the tiny stage and behind the curtain. there was RL... sitting (in my hat), holding court with 4 young ladies.

he gave me a big smile as he was signing an autograph, we shook hands and I asked if I could buy him a drink.

"Sure, man. A bloody m*therf*cker."

"pardon me?"

"ask at the bar. they'll know. a bloody m*therf*cker. it's like a bloody mary, but different."

so I did, ran to the bar. ordered it. the bartender smiled, shook her head and said, "that RL..." (didn't get to see what went in to it to make it different, though and didn't think to ask. sadly.)

so I brought it back to RL. and then hung out FOR THE NEXT FOUR HOURS with him. many many drinks later I asked if he'd sign my (his former) "Tri-W Rental" hat. and he did.

again, fueled with liquid bravado, I asked him if he wanted me to sign his. he said, "YEAH, MAN! That'd be cool!" So I did. and he said, "I'm playing the Kansas City Blues Festival next week and I'm gonna wear this m*therf*cker." (Dont' know if he did, but I choose to believe...)

so he asked about my Preservation Hall lid, and I told him I had just come back from Jazz Fest in New Orleans. he hadn't heard of it. so I gushed about it for a while and said that he had to go. and I gave him my business card and said we'd go together.

he said, "that'd be real cool, man. I just got a mobile."

"Like a cell phone? what's the number?"

"No man... a mobile home. I'm gonna give you a call, you come down and we'll go to that 'Jazz Fest' together..."

Sadly, he never called. and then he passed. but I often think of how different my life would be if I went to Mississippi and then drove to Jazz Fest with RL Burnside... *sigh...*

when I left, way past closing time, he signed my poster "To My Friend Lee, From R.L. Burnside, A Friend."

a great night.....

poster & hat are 2 of my most prized possessions. here they are: hanging proudly in my home office. [over a couple artifacts, including a pic of Galactic (when they still had the Houseman!) signed by each member and noted, "To Lee & Charity, Congrats on the wedding!"]

God... I truly can't wait for Jazz Fest...

nice one! and yes, my life was forever changed by hanging with RL. I just often think back about that possible trip in his mobile... perhaps I'll write a play about it...

in fact... after I posted to you, I did a long internet search to see if there happened to be any surviving possible pics of him at KC with my hat. well, it's inconclusive. but the BBC's announcement of his death used this photo...

again, inconclusive. and no sign of it provenance. but DAMN it looks like my Preservation Hall lid...

again, I choose to believe...

Excellent stuff. Dylan tunes well and lesser known done by some of his contemporaries....Roger McGuinn, Richie Havens etc, alt and indie rock veterans....John Doe, Los Lobos, Tom Verlaine, Eddie Vedder, Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Jeff Tweedy, Calexico, and more recent artists....Jack Johnson, Sufjan Stevens, Black Keys, Cat Power.

Mary Gauthier - Between Darkness and Light One of my favorites of this year.
Sparse moody production, just her guitar and touches of drums, organ, pedal steel, and a voice and lyrics that convey the despair and the hope that life can bring, just as the title suggests.

She is brilliant, and her previous record Mercy Now is great as well.

RUNNIN' DOWN A DREAM: TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS
Peter Bogdanovich, Director

Comprehensive, revealing and epic in scope, this rare examination of three decades in the history and development of an American rock band from filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich (THE LAST PICTURE SHOW) focuses on 2002 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Incisive interviews and plentiful concert footage tell the story of a band and its front man - described by Bogdanovich as "an American troubadour in the truest sense of the word" - who have earned 16 Grammy™ nominations and sold more than 50 million recordings.

Not only do threads drift within threads.....sometimes they drift to other threads! :)

I believe a numismatist is someone who studies munismats while an apiarist is some on who plays the ancient woodwind instrument the apiar.
