View Full Version : Need a little first weekend music help....

Been researching online the bands performing first weekend. I've noticed a trend with the larger stages that a lot of the music is pretty mellow and or folksy. Not that there is anything wrong with that but we like music that moves us and we don't want to spend the entire weekend at Fais Do-Do. I don't know if its just that the songs available online by the performing artists are their more mellow stuff or I'm just looking in all the wrong places.
We like all types of music (jazz, blues, brass, jam band, zydeco) so any suggestions are appreciated. These are some of the ones we've "penciled in" to give an idea of what we know we like. We are looking for new discoveries.
Pine Leaf Boys
Mofro
Astral Project
Bonerama
Kermit Ruffins
Tab Benoit
Rebirth
Sonny Landreth
Burnside
Geno Delafose
George Thorogood
Big Al Carson
Guitar Slim Jr.
Marva Wright
Steve Riley
Trombone Shorty
Just wander the grounds and follow your ears.
No better or more fun way to discover new stuff than that.

I dont know what your looking for, your list seems to answer your own question. A few side trips to the Gospel Tent and the Heritage stage and it seems like a butt shaking time to me.

We've seen most of the ones I've listed...there is a comfort level there.
I appreciate the suggestions...keep 'em coming. There's been a couple occassions where I have my set list of bands to see so I end up missing other new bands and then end up discovering them a year later a different festival and I kick myself for having missed them all that time. :D
We're from Florida and didn't discover Mofro until 2005 at Langerado...I looked back at prior show schedules at ACL and Langerado and we could have been listening to them for years!
Thanks again for turning me on to some new stuff.

Yep. To expand on your point out that they have DMB's stamp of approval I was pointing out that they also had the Stones.

Fri -- Rev Charles Jackson (can't miss), Grayson Capps (down home original blues), Soulive (has a big jam band following, but I don't love them), Happy Talk Band (not my favorites, but definitely on the rock sode of southern rock)
Sat -- Johnson Extension, Shannon McNally (a bit mellow, but good nonetheless, her pedal steel player is phenomenal), Electrifying Crownseekers (added "electrifying" to their name and they deserve every letter), NO Klezmen Allstars (fun and upbeat)
Sun -- Bluerunners, New Orleans Social Club (an all star NO band), John Mooney (he can play slide), Rocks of Harmony, Bobby Lounge (more animated than his recordings), Sunpie Barnes (at the kids tent, but should be fun), Little Queenie (She plays with a killer band and has been known to do some great covers (Kashmir, I am The Walrus, Manic Depression, etc...), Rosie Ledet (as up beat as you can get), Bingo (very different, but I loved it!)

Marva Wright awesome!! as well,Kermit Ruffins, and of course Rebirth those are the ones if you are walking around the fest I would make a point to see..
Most of the ones mentioned above are playing at the French Quarter fest this weekend as well... I hope I helped a little.

festaholic, with a list like that Im not so sure you need any help. Nice taste in music. So, you must already know about Mooney. Just get to the Blues Tent 90 mins. before Thorogood for some great slide. Stop by and say hello & I will buy you a beer. Now, you have Trombone Shorty and Bonerama which are both great picks, but playing opposite of them has me in the Blues Tent for Lucky Peterson. Can you say FOMS. FOMS big time!!! As for Marva Wright, will have to catch her 5:30 show on either 1st or 2nd Thursday. After Tab Benoit, you might want to get over to Fais Do Do for Bobby Charles with Sonny Landreth.

Okay...that was the easy answer...I'm looking for a little work here. :p
I was dead on serious. Far too many folks overplan their Fest. I'm guilty of it myself. And it only gets harder to avoid as you come back each year a little more familiar with the bands.
Those rare timeslots when you look left to right across your cubes and discover that there's nothing marked in yellow should be treasured. That's the time to check out economy hall or the gospel tent, to take in a food demo even, or to wander and wander until something catches your fancy.

It's funny, as I check further into the suggestions here, it is apparent that I must have had my head up my *** when I was going through the list. Perhaps I was too focused on the big stages and couldn't see the forest for the trees.
Swag...I hear what you are saying about overplanning...I do like to have it semi-planned so that if a set I'm watching doesn't live up to expectations I can jump to something that overlaps and might be geographically close.
My biggest concern now is whether I'll have time to make my five daily stops for food! I may have to double up on the crawfish bread early and keep it in the backpack...then focus on the crawfish monica and cochon de Lait Po-boy during the afternoon "Breaks"....then...if they don't run out, I can grab my Pheasant gumbo and Oyster patties towards the end... Too much to do! Too much to do!
Thanks again everyone for the suggestions....they have really helped and I discovered something...a lot of artists have MySpace pages but you have to know them because they don't show up on the MySpace music search. I've been able to track a lot of your suggestions down by just putting www.myspace.com/"bandname". Okay...I'll shut up now....Two weeks...Two weeks....I think I need some ridilin...my mom always told me I can't eat chocolate....

great visual..... From the very 1st moment they posted the first weekend,.. especially that incredible Friday,.. I've been checkin', recheckin',.. checkin',.. recheckin',.. and then chickin' dancin' in my head every day since....
Gotta start with Mr. Eddie Bo,.. or at least catch his last half hour.... I'd like to envison an early mornin' visit by Bonnie Raitt on that stage,.. as she always honors music royalty... and even if that doesn't happen,.. all manner of outright fun and funky checkin' the bucket stuff will take place... As mentioned by others,.. Kirk Joseph is a must see if you enjoy a funkin' good time.....
jus' too much to see,... no way around it,.. those FOMS thingamajigs will be blastin' full bore like never before....
And thanx E lady,.. the bluerunners sound great,... may not get a chance to see em' though.... that's the fest for ya'....

that is one great day that lies ahead!!!!!!!!!!..... and jus' two weeks from today,... oh bay-beeeeeee.....
